ORIGINAL: deadhead Sacred Warrior, Bride, Shout, Kerry Livgren, Degarmo and Key, Petra, X-Sinner, Barren Cross, Whitecross, Rez, Larry Norman, Bloodgood, 77's, Keith Green(70's still awesome today), David Zafirro I must confess that when it comes to CCM music I am a newbie. Back in the 80's my Christian music consisted of five groups: Stryper (their music has gotten stale, except for their ballads), Warrior (whom I don't think is technically a Christian band even though they thank God in their liner notes), Trouble (Christian in lyric, Black Sabbath in style), U2 (I knew they had to be Christian from their lyrics) and The Altar Boys. It seemed that they were hard to find at my local Music Plus, Warehouse or Tower records. In a few short years, my CCM collection has ballooned to over 40 CD's. Now I only plunk my money down for the "Christian Rock Star" music (as my six year old calls it). I'm trying to make up for lost time! I wish I had known about all these other groups. I could've given my youth group more alternatives to listen to.

There was a real Christian sub-culture back then, and even now to a certain extent where you had to tap into local Christian Book Stores and labels to get the music. A lot of the "better" music wasn't played on my local station and did a lot of trial and error by buying records blind based on review. TBN's "Real Videos" helped with my music deciscions as well.

I love this thread! So many wonderful memories. Most of my favorites have been mentioned, but I want to put in another plug for David Meece - that guy is both funny and inspiring and God has given him an immense talent for piano. I also love Steve Green and Larnelle Harris (I know they are far from Christian metal, but I still believe he would be considered CCM.) And Keith Green. And Petra. I think I also had a Jerusalem album. And I had Farrell and Farrell's Let the Whole World Know Live album. Oh, one more that I love is Andrus, Blackwood, and Company - especially their LIVE album (particularly Jesus, You're So Wonderful). Of course I loved Amy Grant and Michael W. Smith - saw Amy Grant when MWS was still her keyboardist. I think the thing about this era of CCM for me is that I was a new believer and so these songs are extra special and make me very nostalgic for a time when my faith was so fresh and before you get bogged down with all the theological debates!

DeGarmo and Key, Farrell and Farrell, 2nd Chapter of Acts, Dallas Holm just to name a few. I don't hear their stuff on the radio anymore. Hope soemone does bring about a Classic Christian station. We sure could use it.

Yes, that is part of the specialness for me as well. It was brand new and it was Christian Rock! Does anyone remember David & The Giants? Noah was probably one of the very first CCM songs that I ever heard. That one and Carman's "Sunday's On Its Way" too. Both were on CBS's Priority Recrods label.

I remember David and the Giants but none of their actual songs, just the name. I don't remember Noah (is that one of their songs?). I admit, too, that I was also a big Carman fan from about 1986 into the 90s. Remember Spirit-filled Pizza? And I loved Lazarus and The Champion.

Yes, Noah was one of their songs, as well as Highway To Heaven too. I had their Under Control album in the mid 80's. One of the hardest things to find now is a copy of David & The Giants first album. I saw a cassette version on Ebay for $9.99. Now I want it bad, but not that bad though. Spirit Filled Pizza was a hoot! Also, songs from Sundays On Its Way as well, which was a mixture of praise and comedy. He did the album live which is his strong point.

A friend and I actually RENTED a car to drive to a Carman concert when we were in college and had no car! I agree with the above that Carman is in his element when doing live concerts, although I liked it better when they were not so flashy as the last time I saw him. When I first saw him, it was just at a church, no big arena, and I think he had his guitar and some soundtrack accompaniment and it was great! That would have been 1986, I believe.

OK, I'm a little late on this thread, but does anybody remember: ---Sweet Comfort Band? (My favs back in the late 70s/early 80s) ---The Imperials when Russ Taff was the lead singer? --Andrus Blackwood & Co.? ---2nd Chapter of Acts ---Oden Fong? ---Michael Omartian? ---DeGarmo & Key (Another of my favs) (Hold on, I'm reloading the memory side of my brain) ---Mustard Seed Faith? ---Randy Matthews? ---Dallas Holm and Praise? Listening to all of their music was so helpful to me after I first became a Christian. ---Early Margaret Becker (Another fav) ---Wall Bros. Band ---Benny Hester OK I think I went back a little farther then I was supposed to. I'd start a seperate thread but I think I need 50 posts, so when I get there, I'll probably do it.

Hey amyk: I remember some of David and the Giants songs! Remember ---PLease Don't Give Up On Me? ---HUmanistic Wisdom?(We called it THe Monkey Song ---Are You Ready? Would you believe I still have these songs on a cassette I taped off the local radio station in Houston from around 1985? And it still sounds crystal clear! Remember cassettes? Sorry I don't have any 8-tracks. Dittos to humbleinspirit on your last post. Remember when Carman's The Champion came out. I thought that was so cool! Was that '84 or '85? Yeah, I still have that one on cassette too. Anybody remember Will MacFarlane?

I entered the CCM music scene back in the early 80's, so while a few of the older groups sound familar, I am not necessarially familar with their music. However early D&K, Margaret Becker, etc really rocked!

rlj: Benny Hester put out a few more good ones like Come Back and Rubber Canoe. tafkam: I also wondered what happened to Margaret Becker. I think her "Steps of Faith--1987-1991" CD is the best piece of music I own. OH yeah, what about Joe English from the early 80's? He seemed to drop off the radar screen after a few albums. And I don't think anyone in the posts above mentioned Bob Dylan when he cut his "Saved" LP back in the early 80's. I'll have to dig out my old stack of vinyl and see if I have it. OK, and the Archers, too. Also remembering Mylon and the Broken Heart Band from the early 80's, like mentioned in a post above. I remember when the "Sheep in Wolves Clothing" LP came out. It was pretty radical and techno.

ORIGINAL: Texas-PLM ---Benny Hester Hey, I guess I actually listened to six CCM groups (up from the previous 5) during the 80's! Whoo-Hoo! I guess living in LA there was just too much of the secular stuff overshadowing the CCM. I mean Van Halen played my high school (1976-77), there was the clubs on the Sunset Strip or Hollywood Blvd. that either were punk (late 70's, early to mid 80's), new wave or Heavy Metal. No big PR machine here for any CCM acts save Stryper who played the biggest venues for any Christian act - except for U2. But then, U2 didn't throw Bibles to the audience and have an altar call like Stryper did. In fact, I just heard that the Troubadour at which I saw many a band is celebrating their 50th anniversary! I wonder what the bands that were playing back in 1957!

David Meece, David Meece, David Meece!!! Also, in the honorable mention category, Benny Hester, Chuck Girard, Michael Card, Terry Talbot and his brother Michael, Andrus Blackwood and Company, and, last but not at all least, Keith Green.
