I hate the plastic bags.

Bring back paper sacks!

You obviously don't need to scoop cat litter.

Or do you still use your shoes?

The man has a point...

Few of the stores here will pack bags for you automatically. Some will ask if you need any help and sometimes the scouts and such raise money for something so will bag pack. I prefer to do my own though.

I felt empowered by this thread when I went shopping today. I told the bagger exactly how I wanted things done.

Good for you!

I have been thinking about it... wonder what they'd do if the packers packed and the shopper unpacked and packed everything properly!

You mean when you buy groceries you have to bag them yourself most of the time? (if so) Has it always been that way?

My mom gets paper bags still at the commisary on base.

I just hate it when my bread gets squished.

Yep! Are you shocked! I think it's always been that way. Most of the little (ie not supermarket) shops (at least the ones I go to) will pack bags for you (and do it well!) whether you take your own, or use theirs. I generally take my own though and find it easier to pack as they scan.

Yes I am! I totally avoid the stores that expect me to sack. Too much pressure for me at one store and just annoying at the other.

I've never been to a grocery store that expected the customer to bag the groceries.

There is a grocery store several miles from us that is more of a warehouse than a store and they have really deep discounted prices. You need to bag your own groceries there. They don't even have shelves. Items are brought in on pallets which sit on the floor.

I've never been to one that didn't. The only time the markets around here will bag for you is if it's crazy busy.

Kath, do you pump your own gas? Or do you guys have full service lanes there? Here it's illegal to pump your own gas. You're not even supposed to get out of your car in the gas station.

ETA: What Denny said sounds like a chain called Aldi's. We have one of them but I've never been there. I'm very leary of non-brand name foods; they tend to be of poorer quality.

The cats will want to use my shoes if I leave them outside.

Otherwise I take care of the cat poop the same way I do the dog poop - Spread it all as manure when I mow the grass.

Bill - give aldi's a try. I know what you are saying about off brands, I will say that their brand of green beans beats Walmart - we did a side by side comparison this week. The canned fruit salad is good and the chocolate is WONDERFUL.

They have a nice selection of fresh veggies and meats and often have name brands as well. I don't like their bread but the kids & Poppa do. I think it is too dry, but then again, I make toast by letting it sit in the sun for a minute...

We like Aldi's. Some of their stuff is great, other things miss. I usually just try one can of something and see if we like it. Hubby likes their precooked sausages better than anybody elses. I like their cashews more than I like Planters. They have great frozen fruit and we love their frozen green beans.

My sister's boss, a confirmed penny-pincher, says the same things about Aldi's. Guess I should break down and check them out.

FoodMax is like that. And they take cash only, and any bags you use you have to bring or purchase. They don't have name brands. I went one time, in an attempt to save money, and I got a few things. Just to check them out. The syrup I bought was so watered down it might as well have been coke without carbonation.

Bill, you can't pump your own gas?!?!?!?! Oh, for the days!!! I haven't seen a full service gas station in years.

As for bagging my own groceries...that's what I have children for.

We pump our own gas here.

I wouldn't mind having full service stations, but they would have to have LATE hour stations too.
Especially in Colorado in the winter, or if I'm dressed up for whatever reason. BLECH!!!!

Nope. First time I pulled into a station outside of NJ I sat for like 10 minutes before I realized I had to get out and do it myself. To me that's the height of inconvenience, so I'm wondering if Kath has to get out to pump gas, and if she finds it more inconvenient than bagging her groceries.

It's all about what we're used to, right? I'm used to pumping my own gas. I am not used to bagging my own groceries.

All of our stations around here are self-serve. On icy, cold days, it would be nice to have someone else do it.

I agree! I miss having my gas pumped, especially when I'm dressed nicely and have to get gas. Luckily, WHN keeps a good eye on my car and will make a special trip with it to get gas when he sees I am low.

That's interesting, Bill. I didn't know some states had that law.
