We don't have the Cracker Barrel over here.

You're not missing out on anything Trish We don't have them here either
We have Cracker Barrel... I just don't eat there...

And you call yourself a Christian and a SG fan.

I get breakfast no matter what time I go there.

The thing I miss about losing our Cracker Barrel, was the gift area. They had some cool stuff.
I wasn't real crazy about their food, but we sorta made it a "tradition" to go right after Christmas to Dinner and a bargain hunt. LOL!

The other cool thing about going there in the winter is they had a big ole fireplace going and you could here the crackle of the fire and all.
Oh, and ours during good weather, had a line of rockers out front.

You are deprived...way back when some of us women met in North Carolina at the Outer Banks for a GT, I had the chance to eat at Cracker Barrel twice on the ride to and from Ohio with Laura and Di, and it's great!!! Yum!!!

Someday I'll have the chance to do so again...

I have been to Cracker Barrel once and I wasn't that impressed.

I think those of you who have never been to Panera Bread or Spicy Pickle are more deprived than those who have never been to Cracker Barrel

Yeah, I'm going to feel deprived because of those. Seriously, I would love to try a Panera Bread stop.

Cracker Barrel must be a southern thing, mostly country cooking.

I've noticed that the more northern Cracker Barrel's aren't as good as the more southern ones. Probably harder to get cooks who really understand butter and pork fat.

Mrs. K is a Maine yankee, and I have to grit my teeth when she orders brown gravy for her biscuits.

Out here in California, places like Panera Bread and Spicy Pickle are normal. Panera Bread is really yummy, but you can find equally good food in that style in many places.

Good Southern cooking is hard to find out here, and that type of food is out of the ordinary to me, so I really, really like it. It's special!

We have Panera bread in abundance in the south, and we like them. I've never heard of Spicy Pickle.

I want to find a Cheesecake Factory.

Well the one that I ate at was in Colorado Springs.

I'm with Mrs. K.

The white stuff looks like a gravy attempt gone bad and sprinkled with pepper and other colored spices.

I'm probably scarred though because my every attempt to make gravy when I was younger seemed to turn out like flour jello. And that's what that stuff looks like that goes on those falling apart biscuits. *sigh* I guess I wouldn't fit in too well unless y'all eat a lot of bacon. And some eggs.

I agree though that probably northern cooks would not be able to truly appreciate the southern palette.

Cheesecake Factory is good, but don't go if you are on a time limit. They are soooo slow gettting food to you and then getting back to you with anything else you need.

Cheesecake Factory is really good! A little pricey, if your order dessert too, but why go there and not get cheesecake??

I really don't like most southern food. It's too greasy and seems like everything has a sauce or a gravy.

Cheesecake Factory is pretty good :)

Sausage gravies are so yucky at most restaurants here. Nobody seems to know how to make a really good one. I found a recipe for sausage gravy that I've made for a potluck at work, and a coworker from Arkansas said it was one of the best sausage gravies she'd ever had. I figure if someone who grew up in the South said that, it must be good, so here's the recipe:

Sausage Gravy

1/2 lb pork sausage
2 tbs butter
2 cups half and half
1 tsp black pepper
1/2 tsp sage
4 tbs flour
1 tsp salt

Brown the sausage, leave in pan, add the butter, seasonings, and the flour.
Mix until flour is absorbed into drippings. Slowly add the half and half and
simmer for 10 minutes.

A great show on Food Network that features Southern cooking is Down Home with the Neelys. I love that show, the interaction between Gina and Pat (I think that's his name) is great - they're such a cute married couple! - and the recipes look awesome too. On the show I saw yesterday they made deep fried devil's eggs

I've shared a recipe for macaroni and cheese from their show on my blog...someday I'm going to make it!

I would like a Cheesecake Factory too.

To show how gravy scarred I am...when I read your recipe Kimberly I first read the 4 Tbs flour as 4 lbs!

So ok, kinda reminds me of an old Brady Bunch episode where the kids did the laundry and put too much soap in the washing machine.

An old roommate of mine was trying to make gravy for the first time one night, and when I walked into the kitchen she asked me if 1/2 cup of flour was enough to make gravy, or if she needed more

Have Britt take you to one while you are visiting her.

Kimberly, that gravy recipe sounds good.

If you live near a Cheesecake Factory, next Wednesday on July 30 they are having cheesecake for $1.50 a slice (limit one per person).
