quote:

.... How do you know what to teach them if you are finding your own resources?

You decide what they want to learn, what you want them to learn, and then find ways to teach them what they want to learn. Remembering that variety is the spice of life and there are innumerable ways to learn.

quote:

Like... how do you know when they are ready for the next grade level?

That's one of the wonderful things about hsing. Grade levels aren't always so important. As their mom, you'll know when they're ready to move on to bigger and better things. And at the ages your girls are, the sequence of learning certain things (like math) is more important than doing it in the right grade. If you have a kid who is ready for algebra in 7th grade, they can do it and get high school credit. If another kid isn't ready until 11th grade, that's okay too.

quote:

... and how do you show proof of advancement?

Again, lots of ways to do this, but what I would do for a junior high/high school course is look through a few scope and sequences (what is taught in each course) of different curricula and either follow one of those or make up your own with those as a guide. By doing that, you'll be making sure that they have covered enough to get credit for a course.

quote:

(questions I'm afraid to ask in the hs folder! )

Awww...don't be afraid to ask anything in there! You might get 20 different answers, but it will give you ideas and a direction to go in. And I promise "they" aren't scary.

I'm not ignoring your questions....I'm composing a PM for you . I know the hs folder can be a bit intimidating.

Hi Rach, thanks for the update! Sounds like things are starting to go a lot better all around!

It is September now and my education is something that I am thinking about more. I looked into non credit courses for web page design, however the school does not offer it at all, so I will have to see if another place has it instead.

Ever know that you want to do something else but just do not know what it is? That is me right now. Nothing that I really want to do will not come without some or much schooling. The way that I see it I probably have to wait up to 3-4 years before I can ever do what I really want to do. Oh well, God is still in control!

You might be able to find an online course for that.

Oh yeah, I was thinking about that! I did HTML a few years back on About.com. I should see if they have anything for Dreamweaver also.

Hey Rach, I never home schooled and don't have any first hand information, but try dialing 2-1-1 from your landline phone and that should get you the Information and Referral in your area. Ask them if there is a Home Schooling organization in your area. I know around here we have a very active organization that not only has suggestions for books and study plans, but they organize "field trips", have sports teams and all that stuff. Another thing I have heard is to check with the school district to see what they require for documentation so you don't run into any problems from them about the kids not being in school.

Good luck with all that! Hey, if Dave is an ndependent contractor maybe he could have the kids do some hands on learning at some of his jobs(not to mention getting a little free labor, heh, heh)!

.... hey Mike! I think taking a class would be fantastic! I love taking classes.... my parents did, too... it seemed as if they were always taking a class about something or other.... learning is something that no one can take away from you....

Online classes are getting better and better.... I started a Bible class before I moved... but wasn't able to complete it.... it will have to wait until we can get Internet access at home.

Interesting that you should ask about DD#1, Trish.... she is really facing a tough decision... it seems she is toying with the idea of entering the Army.

We exchanged some serious emails about it last week.... I think she is in need of direction and her heart is feeling very lonely... and we all know Who she is looking for.... please pray for her as you think of her....

Thanks for the suggestions, HnS.... Beckey talked about the same thing.... It will be much better when we finally get really settled (into a house).... than yeah.... Dave will be working with them.... He is excited to teach them what he can...

We have Ike headed our way.... it may mean another trip up north later on in the week... it will be interesting to see how this week plays out.

Mom is already making plans to come down.... She flies from CA to IN today.... and then will be getting things ready for her move...

I think she's excited to have some direction in her life.... the girls and I miss her.....

I hope all have/had (Trish!) a wonderful day!

xxoo

I would recommend NOT talking to anyone in the local school district. TX laws require you to report to NO ONE.....and the people in the school district will only be interested in getting them back into the public school so they can get the fed govt funding for them.

.... Yeah... I found that website.... (escapes my mind at the moment)

They say the same thing....

Hey Trish!

Hey Gary! I was just wondering where you've been lately.... I haven't seen you in forever!!!

...

I started walking with a co-worker.... amazing how exercise and a good chat will make the entire day go much better! We are looking forward to walking as many days a week as our schedules will allow...

Last night... the girls learned 'home ec' stuff...

K learned how to cook salmon patties... and C learned how to make cinnamon rolls from scratch... (of course we can't have 2 girls in the kitchen at the same time learning the same thing! I think this sibling rivalry makes me crazy! )

I gotta run... work calls....

Thanks to all for stopping by!

Yep, you've got a ridge building in over you that's pushing it towards the west once it enters the Gulf later today or tomorrow. It'll still be a strong storm, but each model run is trending the path to the south. At 5pm yesterday, they had it heading towards Houston; at 11pm it's near Corpus; at 5am it's near Brownsville, and maybe by the 11am today it'll even be into northern Mexico.

Welcome - any time! Hey, it's my passion, and now I know plenty of people in TX, so have to keep an eye out on them. Lauren is just south of Houston - so between you and her - I was very concerned when it was heading that way! I'm more relieved now.

Thanks Lisa. I am not wanting any hurricanes when I go to Mississippi.

I just watched the weather on TV. It looks like the weekend will be a very wet one for Kansas and Missouri. The remnants of Ike will be coming north with a lot of moisture. A storm from the Pacific, Lowell, will bring more moisture and a cold front will come from Canada. We may see 4 or 5 days of rain.

True. When are you heading down again?

Rach - don't let down your guard - now that it's entering the Gulf, it's going to re-intensify and expand. So while you may not get hurricane force winds, you will most definitely get weather from it - especially as it turns north.

Dallas is going to get a LOT of rain!

Yeah, my mom is all wigged out about Ike. Our wether guys are saying if it stays strong we could have up to 95 mph winds. I hope we don't though.
