I think Daniel Mount would've found a new appreciation for the Booths if he'd been there tonight!!

I might have. But I like the Mark Trammell Trio so much, and Greater Vision to an extent after them, that the next open spot on my list of favorite trios is #3.

I've spent the last two days hosting The Rowlands.....this is Kyla Rowland's brother, Ron, and his group. They are an excellent group that have been singing for many years. Look for a new website by them soon.

The most recent concerts I have attended include the alternative to Halloween concert in Winston Salem on 10/28. The evening of 10/29 I had the chance to see CrossWay. They were awesome! I can't wait for their new album. Looking ahead to this Sunday 11/19, I am planning to go see Ricky Atkinson & Compassion.

Daniel,
On a side note, speaking of the Booth Brothers. They are the type of group you truly can't appreciate until you've seen them in concert. They have provided some of the best concert moments I have had a chance to be a part of.

I did go and see the Dill's last night. As usual they were great. They had an equiptment breakdown during the program. The music just stopped in the middle on one of their songs, but Shawn just went back to his keyboard and played while they sang. They never missed a beat. They had another laptop computer on the bus so sent one of the children to it back, they hooked it up, and continued. If that had not worked they could, and would, have continued with just the keyboard. To me that is talent to be able to continue and not get upset.

MissGizmo,
My aunt attends the church the Dills were at last night in Virginia. From the sound of things it sounds like they did a good job.

Seaton,

Thanks for the info. I must admit their studio work hasn't really blown me away. Unfortunately, there isn't a Booth Brothers concert anywhere in my part of Ohio scheduled for the next 12 months.

Isn't it amazing how certain artists record great music then are average on the concert stage but then there are those artists that simply command a concert stage. My favorite artists tend to be those that excel in the live setting.

I agree with you, Seaton. My favorites actually do great at both, but there are a few groups that I think sound better in person than on their recordings. I think seeing them perform the songs in concert makes a huge difference from just hearing the recordings.

Seaton,

I'm sure your aunt will agree with me that the Dill's did an amazing job of carring on when something went wrong. To me that is the true picture of how a group can & will handle things. It spoke very highly of them in my mind. The word of God was spoken as well as sung by them, and I heard no one complaining, but there were lots of compliments about how well they did the concert.

Last night I went to see The Perrys in Wichita, KS. What a wonderful night that was. This was their first concert in a number of years in Wichita & they were concerned about attendance but they needn't have been. There was a good turnout & the crowd was very responsive.

This was my first time to hear Nick Trammell with the group & I was very impressed with this young man. He does a great job in the baritone slot, reminiscent of his dad, Mark. He is a very sweet young man, too.

They did DAMASCUS ROAD, GOD WALKS THE DARK HILLS, WHO AM I?, HIS NAME WAS JOHN, among others & the crowd ate it up.

It was a wonderful night.

I agree with you Dinana, for example; Jeremy Peace and Phillip Hughes sound better live.

Very interesting. Those probably are their two or three best projects, so I can't really say that you haven't heard what they can do in the studio. In my opinion, they are vocally the best trio in Southern Gospel right now, just waiting for a few "career songs."

(In case anyone was wondering, the voice quality of a group's tenor is a big factor in how I rate a trio.)

Spoken like a true tenor!!!

I give the most weight to the quality of the lead singer whether it's a trio or quartet. I think Dustin Sweatman is doing a great job, by the way!

Actually, as my voice is settling (which it has been over the past year), I'm sounding more like a lead singer who can sing into a tenor's range.

However, I am incredibly picky when it comes to tenors. Of tenors currently on the road, I like the voice quality of Eric Phillips, Ernie Haase, John Rulapaugh (only sort-of on the road), and three or four others. Of the rest, I tolerate some better than others.

Maybe it's because of GV's incredible hit songs like "Paid In Full," "My Name Is Lazurus," "He's Still Waiting By the Well," "He'd Still Been God," "Faces," "God Wants To Hear You Sing," etc., that makes them the best in my opinion.

The Booth Brothers energy is what makes them stand out

The MTT's rich sound and gentlemen's presence make them stand out

Anybody like Karen Peck & New River?

They are certainly one of the best, no question about it and pretty much no matter who you ask. In sheer vocal ability, I like the Mark Trammell Trio more, but there's no two ways about it--the MTT hasn't come out with songs yet that let us see their ability to the fullest.

Yes. As a matter of fact, I get so worn out just thinking about them that I'm not sure I'd have the energy to make it out to one of their concerts! <end exaggeration!>

Exactly. They really have class. Plus, they have some great songs and (gotta work this in once more) one of the best tenors on the road today. I have never heard another tenor go to the G above high C and maintain the same voice quality he has at the G above middle C.

All the industry insiders seem to, and for some reason they don't resonate anywhere near as well with fans on the outside. They are an artist's artist.

I for one like Karen Peck & New River. Of course, it is the variety in Southern Gospel that appeals to me. I remember seeing the group when they first hit the scene back in 1991. They have had some great songs over the years ('When Jesus Passes By', 'God Likes To Work', 'Four Days Late', 'Hold Me While I Cry'). I can understand how they may not appeal to the pure traditionalists. When they were traveling with their full band (one of the best ever in Southern Gospel) they were great.

And it is my opinion that groups in Southern Gospel that have women as members in their group never get as much respect as groups that are made up of all men.

Seaton...What about the Perrys?
The Happy Goodmans?
The old Weatherfords?

Daniel,
There are certainly exceptions to the rule. But will the Perrys/Happy Goodmans ever be held in the same regard as the Cathedrals/Blackwood Brothers/Statesmen/Gold City. You can look to the message boards and see that 80% (only estimating) of the topics center on quartets/trios that consist of all men. I don't have a problem with that (they are the groups the members of the board want to talk about). I am simply making an observation.

What if the Perrys never changed their vocal configuration back around 2000-2001? What if they kept the female soprano part in their group instead of moving to a more traditional quartet sound? Would they be reigning mixed group of the year for three years in a row? I am only speculating, but my guess would be no. What if the Singing News Fan Awards never separated the awards back in 1997 and still only had group of the year? Would any artist other than a male quartet/trio win? Of course they could, but my guess would be not as often.

I understand we are now off topic here but an interesting conversation nonetheless.

Well considering that 4 men and a male piano player singing 4-part men's arrangement are what started SG, the above is understandable.... Actually, I see more of a trend starting in SG which is recognizing mixed groups and females more and more. I don't think females are out of the picture. As far as other genres such as CCM/country, there are many female soloists who are wildly popular, it's just that SG was started with 4part men's arrangements and that's the reason for the attention and devotion to male quartets.

I venture to say that they could do it. If they can keep on top and keep producing top-notch music for twenty more years, then they quite possibly could. Obviously, they're not viewed in the status of a legend yet, but I think they are legend / Hall of Fame material.
