Leah, personally, I don't believe that a lot of health store pills do much good, but maybe you can prove me wrong. The difficult way of watching diet is the only way. Please keep me informed about your hands. Desperation can lead us to try new things and I'm about to go there with my son, Tim.
He has taken Embrel injections for his psoriasis and they work well. However, it lowers his immune system.
Tim had a minor accident on his bike and scraped up his elbow. Like a zombie, I thought the usual washing, applying Neoprene, covering at first would bring healing. It did heal properly.
Then he got a couple boils, which raised concern. He had one round of antibiotics, then got another boil and went a second round of antibiotics. If he gets another boil, he will be tested for MRSA. All because of that stupid shot.
He goes off the shot when he's on antibiotics. His forehead looks like a big burn, but it's his psoriasis. My heart breaks for him, but those shots are not worth the risk, imo.

That's rotten about Tim, Marsha. But I can't say as I blame you for discontinuing the injections.

I have never been a big believer in vitamins & supplements either until lately; but as I am getting older and starting to have more & more problems with my body, I am leaning that direction. A really big shove came last year when Garrett gave me a rotavirus that made me very sick for about 3 days. The virus was bad -- probably sicker than I've ever been, or as least just as sick as I've ever been in my life. After my recovery, tho, I felt wonderful! -- for nearly a week, I had more energy than I'd had in years, had no pain in my joints, muscles, could go up & down the steps with no hesitaion or creaking of the joints. It was great! And I didn't realize at first what had happened . . then it hit me: my body had de-toxified itself due to the virus.

Since I've always had a metabolism problem, had to take OTC meds to help that along for years, it was not hard to believe that I was carrying a lot of junk I didn't need -- that was unhealthy. The 'unintentional' detoxification had given me a new lease on life. I went on a quest for info that would help me get that way and stay that way. I added a few things into my daily regimen at that time -- flax seed oil, magnesium, glucosomine/chondroitin, then by the end of summer had decided to try excercise also. All these have helped, but I know I'm still taking in way more than I'm metabolizing properly. The exorbitant cost of OTC supplements and my lack of knowledge about where to start, tho, kept me from going further.

Now, this skin problem has come back full force. It's gotten so bad that I am having to wear gloves to do the most basic activities of daily living, and even that doesn't keep me from having to apply ointment and bandaids several times a day. My feet have never cleared up in the 8 years I've been dealing with this; they are constantly cracking, thick skin building up, having to be scraped, filed, bandaids & ointments applied. And the itching has nearly driven me crazy at times . . . keeping me awake at night, sending me out of church, meetings, etc., to get to a place where I can scratch them and get some relief. Actually, my right foot started this itching 15 years ago, and has never let up. We've never been able to decipher if this original itch is connected to the excema which didn't show up for another 7 years. Anyway, when I couldn't get in to see the doctor for several weeks, I knew I had to take action.

I really just went to the health food store for some hemp ointment/butter to try, but the woman was so very helpful, not pushy, and extremely knowledgeable about what she sold, and she was willing to sit down with me and look up in a book (written by an M.D.) just what was the root cause and possible help for dermatitis. (the book also said that excema is just another term for dermatitis -- or a type of dermatitis). It listed what vitamins/minerals, etc., were needed for healthy skin, how they work in the body, and what was lacking that had likely caused the problem to begin with. Having some knowledge (from my nursing school days) about the internal workings of the body, what we read was plausible, and believable. She helped me sort it all out, and figure out the best way to go about purchasing the basics for a good internal regimen to get me started. There was much more I could have bought, but we were trying to keep it down to the basics.

Even more impressive to me was the fact that this woman is a Christian, kept reminding me how our bodies are 'fearfully and wonderfully made', as well as quoting other scripture, and that what we put into it nowadays is far from what God intended us today when he created us. I had no idea the lady was a Christian when I went to see her. Also, she mentioned a couple of times that she loves meat, so I knew I wasn't talking to a 'health-food fanatic', but rather someone who was simply trying to live healthier, eat healthier, and help others do the same.

She stayed over 2 hours past her closing time to talk to me, and in the end told me the 4 basic things I needed to get started on a healthier diet, and what of those 4 things she felt could be purchased cheaper somewhere else without sacrificing too much quality. I wound up purchasing all four suggestioned items there, plus some natural ointment especially for excema, because I didn't have time to drive to a supercenter AND because she had been so very helpful and informative and willing to go the extra mile -- without any prior commitment on my part.

After my friend & I had checked out our purchases, she asked if I had a problem with being prayed for -- absolutely not!. So, she anointed me with anointing oil and prayed for me.

It was so much more than I'd anticipated, hoped for, expected . . and I felt God's hand in it. I don't know if this will keep me from having to go to the dermatologist, but if it does, what I spent yesterday would be about the same as 2 visits to him. My hands and feet are in as bad or worse shape than they were a few years ago when this started, so I know it will take several visits to clear them up, as it did then, and there are no guarantees with that either. Plus, what they give me in the shots is steroids, which will likely cause other, possibly more serious problems down the road . . as you already know from Tim's difficulties.

Anyway, guess that was way more than you wanted to know about all this . . . but it's helped me to write it all out here -- think it through logically. I do feel I've made a good decision. Guess time will tell.

What a caring and considerate sales-clerk! My doctor is also a Christian and even though he'll treat your symtoms...he will also pray for you! Good for you Leah! I hope everything goes good and your skin problem heals up. I'll continue to keep you in my prayers.

Marsha, I'll also be praying for your son as well.

that is a blessing about the Christian sales clerk. My LPN says vitamin b-12 and folic-acid helps her psoriasis. I may look into it, really soon.

Being a former group leader for one of the major weight loss companies (won't mention names, but the initials W.W. are involved ) I am in full agreement that the only way to significantly get weight off and keep it off is the good old fashioned way. Good nutrition and exercise. But I grant you, there are times I cannot eat as I'd like to (and yes, I am VERY "backslid" on my program, having regained all my old weight. But I will be getting it off). To this end, my wife Beth and I each take a multivitamin, in our case its an OTC product in our store's own name label. Beth takes the "woman's formula" and I was FINALLY able to find the men's.

Long and short of it, and not wanting to sound trite about it, but you simply need to be BURNING more calories than you're taking in, no matter what program you follow. Since WW went to their points system, I have been somewhat disenfranchised with them. I prefer an exchange style program like they used to use. Its what I'm most familiar with. Its what we used when we were losing our weight the first time, and it is what they were teaching their group leaders when I went through my training. But the US Department of Agriculture has set up a website with information about their Food Pyramid guidelines, and it includes a way to calculate your dietary needs for a good safe weight loss. For our international friends like Trish, I think they even offer the measurements in metric values?

Do I recall that's 3 breads, 2 meats, 4 veggie and 4 fruits? That's a good general guideline if you're not wanting to jumble your head up with the other stuff. But you also need to consider dairy, fats and water! 8 8oz glasses of water helps your body detox on a daily basis. *nods sagely*

Don't think of it as changing. Think of it as 'refining'. I know I do many things differently than I did before I learned how to do them right! (like typing, and cooking ... and other stuff)

Yeah, but with professionals with years and years to look this over, they are still trying to refine this though? Hmmm.

Aye, true. But hey, doctors learn new stuff every day as well.

Dietary needs change too, Mike. For instance, when I was growing up, fat was one of the food groups. Fat in fact is a necessary nutrient but in today's culture we get way too much fat, so there's no need to put it in the food guide.

Well, dark chocolate DOES have antioxidants! You can't eat massive amounts of it, but an ounce or two occasionally wouldn't hurt.

There are people who do take the fat free/low fat too far. You do need to make allowance for some fats. My WW group leader who recruited me thought she was doing really well when she cut all fat out of her diet. The problem being, fats perform many functions in the body. They transport flavor (without it, many foods taste bland, and food companies stoke up the sugars -- which if your body doesn't use it, it turns it into -- you guessed it! FAT!), they're a building block for cellular processes (nerves don't work well without some fat, hair gets brittle and breaks) So like everything, the keyword is moderation. My WW leader? She got the scare of her life when she woke up and half the hair on her head had fallen out! She said she looked like she'd been on chemo. Her doctor told her that they gave her permission to EAT some fat, and she was fine.

Have a good night friends!

Thanks, Trish. I appreciate that, and I do think I am on the right track.

I didn't make the trip to the health food store for something to help me lose weight. This woman wasn't talking to me about losing weight, either -- in fact, I only remember weight being mentioned briefly. We were discussing how to get my body healthier inside (my digestive tract) so that it would also be healthier outside (my skin). That led to many other areas, weight included, tho very briefly, as I said. Mostly the discussion was about the inner workings of our system and how that proper functioning there would lead to many health benefits including good skin integrity, joints & muscles that no long ache with every movement, and more energy.

I do think when I get to a point of not having to deal with other things like the skin disorder, stiff joints & muscles, a lethargic metabolism, and I have more energy, I will be more able to concentrate, and even feel like concentrating on a food plan that I can learn to live with. Right now I just don't have the energy to do much more than what I have to do to get thru the day, and that does not include planning menus, etc.

As I said, with the unintentional detoxification I went thru over a year ago, I found out that I actually CAN feel so much better than what I do, and had been searching for a way to do that again, and stay like that. The amount of info out there on vitamins/minerals/supplements is overwhelmingly monumental, and I simply could not decipher where I needed to start. That's what I feel like this lady has done for me.

As for the diet, I know what works for me, and am working towards getting back to that particular plan. Right now I am balking because I don't want to do it. Simple as that. But . . as I said, I'm working on that.

We are winterizing here by getting out coats and fixing the yard for winter.

Thumbelina has taken over my house! She loves Oreo and licks him all over his face. She has such energy! I had to lay down for a while today due to chest pains - I just can't keep up with her. She is proving to be stubborn about potty training too. Think I'm going to confine her to the kitchen for some time to come.

She is a loveable little thing though . . .

Leah, is your skin problem due to psoriasis? My mom suffered with psoriasis for about 2 years or so. She applied her 'Selsun Blue' shampoo directly on the scaly places, just to get relief from all the itching. I felt so sorry for her during that time. She was miserable! She was anointed with oil and prayed for at church (more than once). It cleared up and eventually went away completely! She's not had another outbreak since. I'll surely be praying about your skin condition, sis.

Pengie, Thumbelina sounds like the typical little rambunctious baby, that all puppies are at her age! I'm sure you're enjoying watching her discover her world! But please be careful and don't over-exert yourself! You mentioned having chest pains so that means you're pushing yourself a bit to hard. Don't try to keep up with her...let Oreo do that. He probably loves the job anyway!

Well, I've completed putting the water seal on both ramps and the deck. But we're STILL working on finishing the underpinning on the house! We've ran into a problem with rocks. BIG rocks! So it's slowing down our process. I pray we can get finished before the Fall rains set in! There's so much to do!

Anyway, gotta go get out the wheel barrel and get to moving some more rocks. I wait until dh leaves for work to get started, coz he don't want me (a woman) to do any type of "mans work"! HA! Me! The all American, Hillbilly Tomboy doing manly work??? When did I ever quit?!!! When I was still in grade school I helped my brothers do their chores. I chopped wood, carried in buckets of coal, drawed water from the well and fed the livestock. And still had to do my regular, routine chores to boot! Whew! I'm glad that was back when I was younger! I don't think I could do it now! My brain says, "yes" a lot of times when my body says, "NO!"

Hi there, Pengie & Zondie!

Pengie, Zondie is right, you really should be careful not to overdo it. I'm sure Thumbelina is not easy to keep up with, and chest pains would not be easy to deal with. Just be careful!

Zondie, you're doing underpinning? Did you all just move recently? It's been a rainy, dreary day here, so no fit day to be moving rocks. I do understand what you mean when the mind says yeah & the body says nay . . boy, do I understand that!

No, my skin condition isn't psoriasis, it's excema. I'm really hoping the supplement regimen, plus the 'cleanse' will help it's healing, but I sure do appreciate all the prayers I can get.

Thanks Ladies, for thinking about me.
Thumbelina is a bit rambunctous for me to handle. The chest pains got rather bad yesterday. So today baby gates went up at my kitchen doorways and much stress was reduced! Only trouble is I have to take one down to take Oreo out the badk door too when he needs to go out. Small price to pay for a calmer day and a little peace.

I am too old for a puppy

No, we moved here almost 20 years ago. But the old underpinning was a type of vinyl skirting. It got beaten up pretty bad with a weed-eater over the years and needed to be replaced.

NEVER! If anything, a puppy can make us feel young again! Without you telling us...I'd say you've laughed more, since Thumbelina has come into your life, than you have in a really long time! And laughter is a 'GOOD' medicine! Besides, our pets don't care how old we are (or get). Nor, how we look, act, smell or feel! Their love for us is unconditional! So, enjoy her! (With precaution to your health though).

Am balking too. Bought chocolate covered peanuts...yum...yumm,...but oh so not on the diet plan.

Will pray for you Leah. Is this a store we can visit next time I'm up in your area?
