I am obviously very excited about my mensruatl cup, the MoonCup from the UK (btw, I live in the States.)
As we've seen in the pads/tampons thread, lots of people are wondering about the Keeper, DivaCup, MoonCup solution... Would any cup users like to post their experiences? Tips? Reasons they switched?
Would any non-users like to ask questions? Concerns?

This month was my first month on the MoonCup and it was HEAVEN. After I trimmed the stem part to a better length (so it wasn't irritating me when I moved) I couldn't feel it there at all. I could keep it in without worry or discomfort for hours on end. No TSS problems in sight! No drying out, no itchiness, no string in the way, nothing... Praise God for my MoonCup!

Anywho, that's my praise. Any others?

Ok, please explain this phenomenon to me? What is it? I like tampons, but do get concerned that they are not healthy. Please explain the moon cup. Thanks

Well, with a cup solution, there are two types, silicon (sp) or rubber latex. The Keeper is rubber/latex (so people with allergies must stay away!) and then the DivaCup and MoonCup are both silicon which can be boiled to sanatize it between periods. Not sure how the Keeper us cleaned.

So basically, some of the health benefits are these:
1. no bleached tampons bringing chemicals and unsanitary objects inside you. White doesn't mean clean! It usually means bleached. There ARE organic tampons available to buy at most health food stores like Whole Foods.
2. No reported cases of TSS (Toxic Shock Syndrome) with the cups

OK, I checked out the website, and it is really interesting. I have one question for you though, (Sorry if this is gross.) What about when you are laying down? Since the cup "catches" the blood (sorry--gross), wouldn't it be bad to lay down and stuff[&o]?

No, it isn't a problem, 'cause it pretty much blocks the exit, so to speak. Then, when you stand up, it would just pour into it. Btw, I don't think things are straight up and down anyway [;)]

Because the vaginal canal is angled, the cup is angles. It creates a suctioned seal and doesn't move unless you move it. I have no problems with it leaking at night.

Okay, you guys have convinced me, I'm gonna buy the Diva cup. I'm afraid of the Keeper as I don't KNOW if I have a rubber allergy or not; I do know that I have had some unpleasant infections that have not been around for a while and I'm not about to invite them back.

I hope I have purchased my last packages of tampons and pads!


I do prefer tampons but I don't like how they "dry" me out when it's near the end of my period...sometimes it tugs a little too much when removing the last couple of tampons.

I like that the cups don't absorb moisture like tampons do... so they don't "dry you out".

One note of reminder to any new users: you will probably have to cut the stems down by quite a bit in order to have it not poke and irritate the entrance. The key is to have the cup fully inside you. This way it won't break the seal when you bend over and basically, you won't feel a thing! glory be! don't forget to test-run it for fit when it arrives.

I bought a Diva cup a few months ago and the first couple of months I LoVED it!!! Then I started to have problems with leakage - mostly on the first day of my period when it's heaviest and at night. After a few months of that I switched back to tampons but I much prefer the DivaCup.

I noticed a HUGE difference with dryness - in that it was no longer a problem - and all around I think it was much healthier as the body's natural secretions could work the way they are supposed to.

I read the website for the Keeper about how to insert the Keeper and I think they give way better instructions on insertion and since the DivaCup and Keeper are basically the same I'm going to go through instructions again and give my DivaCup another try when my period arrives in about a weeks time. The biggest difference in the instructions was giving the stem a bit of a tug down to create the seal. I don't recall reading that in the DivaCup instructions. I REALLY want this to work for me because it is so much better than other alternatives.

It is also great because you can actually measure your flow and know how much you are losing with your period which is interesting info to have and you can tell better how many clots and stuff you have (gross I know but my doc asks me every time I have my annual exam if there are a lot of clots or not and this way I can know for sure). I like that you can go for a day without having to worry about it at all and that you can boil the DivaCup to sterilize it between periods.

I actually can't wait for my next period so I can try it again. I would wear a panytliner the first couple times just for a bit of a precaution.

Also, just wanted to thank all you ladies for posting about this because it makes me realize the issues I've been having with my period and tampons/dryness/leakage, etc. is something we all struggle with.

ok, question. the problem i have with tampons is they are very uncomfortable to me. does this cup thing "feel" like a tampon?

no, it doesn't.
but if it's not inserted correctly, it will be uncomfortable.

I am using my Keeper right now, and I literally do not feel it. I did used to feel tampons and HATED them! Part of the problem is that they lengthen as they expand, etc.

I know this may seem a silly question to ask - but I'll try and put it frankly - I know that despite the fact that this question is asked, you do not lose your virginity by using tampons and I know that you only lose your virginity by a man and nothing else.
However, I cannot help but feel that the menstrual cup is a little too much like, you know! Obviously I know you dont lose any virginity by it, but does anyone understand what I mean? Tampons I can accept, but, I dont know, I think its the look and material of the menstrual cup etc just make me feel a bit like its basically a bit to close to sex/sexual violation for comfort.

I'm sorry, that must sound so bizarre. But Talmid and others, do you know what I mean? What do you think? I think its just having a rubber thing inside me , you know?

I don't see it that way, particularly when you consider that it looks like a sexual item only if you have it upside down....I think a tampon has more sexual look to it than this thing.

Sex is the last thing I would be thinking of when using this! LOL.

I remember at college a girl was harrassing her roommie who used tampons...she said it was the same thing as having sex. [8|] By that time I was "experienced" -- I had thrown my virginity away by this time - and I said "Honey, you just wait. After your wedding night, you compare that with a tampon, and you'll see how silly you're being."

She didn't appreciate my humor.......[sm=icon_smile_evil.gif]

Conviently, I have my period!!!

IT's in...and it feels weird. I can feel it there. The stem isn't that long so I'm afraid to cut more off it, but I think I may have to. I can't believe how easy it was to get in. A little weird, but easy.

[:D] Let us know what you think over the long term. You may need to make some slight adjustments if you feel it.

I emailed DivaCup to enquire about the problems I had with leakage and they got right back to me with an updated instruction sheet which is more detailed than the one I got with mine. I am impressed with the customer service so far anyway!

I was afraid to cut off the stem of my keeper. It bothered me at first but after a few cycles I quit noticing it.

I must not have it in right, because when I walk, I feel like it's about to pop out!!

The first time I put it in, and decided to take it out and try again, I scared myself half to death...I didn't think I was going to be able to get it out!! I envisioned my embarrassed self trying to explain at the emergency room exactly what I had inside me and why. LOL

THen I remembered you have to "push" and wha-la, I was able to grip it perfectly...but I sure was sceered for a minute.

When I'm sitting it feels okay....but when I walk I keep wanting to run to the ladies room to give it a push back where it belongs!

Question about inserting it: are you supposed to let it pop open as soon as you get it just inside, and push it the rest of the way up fully open? I was pushing it up quite a ways and then letting it open, and that's when it seemed to be "slipping down" whenever I walked.

Just now I took it out and put it in and let it pop open right away -- wow, did THAT feel different going up -- perhaps that's what was wrong earlier? I guess I was just afraid of pushing air up with the open cup.

I let it unfold 1/2 way and then push it up, then turn it; which is supposed to open it up the rest of the way
