Limewire is a peer-to-peer file sharing software. I would not recommend it because it does tend to have adware and spyware included with it.

Good luck convincing your son of the legal issues here. I have had a hard time convincing my 15 yo DD that just because we are able to do something, doesn't mean we should. In this case, she and her (Christian!!!) friends don't seem to get that they are not supposed to "share" music. She's very upset that she just can't give her friends songs we have purchased off iTunes. I told her that she was not allowed to use Peer to Peer downloading, and if she had any questions about a specific situation, she should come ask me what did and did not constitute fair use.

Maybe it would help, though, if we knew what you wanted to use it for. There might just be a better alternative.

I wouldn't waste my time with Illegal downloads. As stated above you can download unwanted viruses, Trojan horses, adware, or spyware.

Not a good idea, like many have said you can get spyware, adware, viruses...etc... and yes "share to share" but honestly it is a illegal you didn't buy the song... tons of kids have like 500+ songs they didn't pay for on their computers... its one thing for you to share a cd or make one for a friend for a bday present but downloading 500 and more songs... its just wrong...I use itunes but there are other places to buy music

My son would like to trade songs with his friends. On another note, for myself what is a good way to listen to particular songs I like? Thank you.

Oh yeah not to mention it will slow down your computer and internet connection because limwire will get with your start-up and stay on and people will be using your share files...slowing your connection and computer. Most people and especially kids do not know how to set it so it doesn't

I have used iTunes in the past, but it's just a big pain. Go Amazon!!! It is likely illegal for your son to do what he's planning to do and Limewire is a terrible way to go about sharing things, even if he is doing something legal. Amazon gives you a preview of pretty nearly any song you're interested in. Then you can decide whether to buy it. If you don't want to buy individual songs, you can listen to Pandora for free and you can also check out some subscription services like Napster or Rhapsody.

Another good source for free songs is project playlist (www.projectplaylist.com). It basically acts as a search engine for music that is already posted online. you can find some good songs and listen to them for free. They don't have as much music as Rhapsody but you don't have a limit on the number of songs, like Rhapsody does.

Ok, so no to limewire. Got that. I definately do not have the skills yet to set 'stuff' up properly. Any thoughts on how I can learn these skills? What is DRM? I have so many computer questions, do I have to start a new post for each one? Thank you.

It's a type of security to prevent unauthorized copying. I think (can't remember exactly) that DRM stands for Digital Record Management. But hey, this is one of the easiest securities to get around.

As for asking other questions, I think there is a catchall thread in this folder. If not, maybe you could start one because it would be helpful to have a place for people to ask questions. As long as everyone knows the advice may or may not be good.

Personally, I think Apple has done a good job straddling the line between the media provider's desires (ie, the record and video production companies who want to limit our use of their material) and the consumer's desires. Songs purchased from the iTunes music store (those that are not DRM-free) can be put on 5 different computers (you have to authorize those computers). You can burn an individual playlist to CD like 5 times. You can burn the song to CD unlimited times, just in a different playlist. I'm not sure how many iPods can have the songs on them...but we have four, which are hooked up to three authorized computers and all of them can download the songs. That may work for you-but my desires as a consumer is to pay a fair price for a song, and then be able to use it how, as many times, and on whatever devices I see fit (just like I can with ripped Cds and handcuff free MP3s from other vendors.) Itunes is not the only game in town-and until they drop the digital handcuffs, AND charge a reasonable fee for DRM Free MP3s, they won't see a dime of my money. There are plenty of consumers who feel likewise.

For years I have purchased entire albums, then cassettes, then CD's only to end up liking two or three songs. I did not complain about them stealing my money... well a few times I did. I have also purchased songs that will work with one brand of mp3 player but not with others. I do not need the "2 wrongs don't make a right" speech, but I have downloaded some songs off of Limewire and would probably do it again. I no longer purchase Ipods for myself, daughters, or anybody else and there are even forums that are for people who are tired of Ipods DRM stuff such as Anything but Ipod LINK
