I put my desktop computer in hibernation this morning. When I tried to star it back up, it would not start. I can hear it trying to do something, but it doesn't sound normal. My monitor stays black and nothing is on the screen. This has happened a few times in the past after shutting down the computer and restarting at a later time, but after the 2nd try, it usually boots up. Any ideas what is causing this and what I can do? The computer is probably 5 years old. Thanks.

Did you unplug it and then try to turn it back on? Because I can't tell from your post if you have tried that. Do you hear any beeps when you try to boot it up? Do you get to the windows screen ?

Not to panic you, but that was one symptom of a pending hard drive failure for me about 4-5 months ago. It's not likely to be the issue, but it's a good reminder to stay current with your backup procedures. There's no such thing as a perfectly good hard drive. BT

Yes, I hear beeps when it tries to boot up, but it doesn't sound like the normal beeps when starting up. It sounds like something isn't right. I don't get any windows screen. Nothing comes up on the screen at all.

Nothing comes up on the screen at all. It sounds like it's the hardware problem. You may have to send the system for repair. I once encountered a case that part of the circuit on the motherboard is not working, don't know since when, that it caused the motherboard fail to recharge the battery, so the laptop failed to power up due to flat battery. Then the problem is even worse as the broken circuit also caused the laptop fail to power up if the battery is removed.

Two beeps is probably the hard drive. Get someone to look at it, or you can replace the hard drive if you know how to do it. It's not hard. If you want to get a new system than that's up to you too because you can get a basic system for not much more than the hard drive, depending on where you look.

I often used to put my computer into hibernate and had a problem with it (though I can't recall what exactly now). I simply turn off totally now, which is a pain and takes longer to restart everything, but I don't have a problem.

I'm not sure it's even worth taking in for repair being that the computer is around 5 years old. I knew this was going to happen eventually, yet I procrastinated with backing up some of the things. Are files recoverable at all? Or is it not worth even trying?

Sometimes they are recoverable. Take it a computer place unless you have a spare computer. Hook up the old hard drive into another pc as a slave drive and see if you can read it. You can send it into a hard drive recovery place like on track data recovery but it could cost 1-2 thousand dollars to if the hard drive is completely gone and they have to repair it. So it just depends on if its worth your time or not.

We have some spare computers at work, so I'm going to check the hard drive to see if it is indeed a hard drive issue. Maybe my data can be recovered. I don't know what a slave drive is? Can you explain that.

Its hooking it up so that isn't the primary (master drive). Normally you just need to change the jumpers (diagram is on the drive) and see if it reads it as a second drive. If it's completely gone it won't be recognized.

I was able to boot up Windows again. Here is what I did: I put in the System Recovery Disk that came with my computer. It gave me the option of going to Windows to use the System Restore in Windows (I think this is what it said), so I clicked on this and it said it would now start Windows. Everything seems to be working fine; although I do not want to shut down the computer for fear that this may happen again. Any ideas what I should do or check for at this point?

OK my question is every computer has a beep code, IE quick beeps or steady beeps. What kind of beeps did you actually hear it would help alot to determine what went wrong and how to fix it.

I know it started with a long beep and then it was hard to tell if there were 2 short beeps and then another longer beep. Not sure if that helps...and I could be wrong because I can't listen to it again to find out.

I found it out for you, and its what i feared. this is taken off of www.computerhope.com/beep.hmt: I assume the computer in dos mode has an Award bios so the code for that is, 1 long, 2 short Indicates a video error has occurred and the BIOS cannot initialize the video screen to display any additional information. In English if you have the slots available just put in a video card, the one that came installed with the main board has died. That's if you want to take the cheapest way out.
