I know that many of you already have your own home... I sold mine a few years ago and am renting so I can save money for my dream home. Of course, I would love to be married and we build the home together - that's my dream. Actually, I have a dream home in mind... I just don't think I could maintain it on my own. Maybe if I made enough money, I could hire someone. What would be your dream home as a single? Would it be different if you're married? What if you and your spouse disagree on the kind of house/home? What if there are huge differences in where you want to live?

What would be your dream home as a single? As a single person, I'm good where I live...a two bedroom condo with a recreation complex that rivals most country clubs. It's also quite far from the city centre, so we don't' have a lot of noise. There's a park in the front, a courtyard in between and another park at the back. Often times, you'd see deers wandering around. I love it here, though I wish my condo is two levels, so I can have some space away from my daughter at times. But this is great and I can see myself retiring here. My dream house would be a two level house with a loft and a balcony for a second level and very open concept in the first level. Maybe 3 bedrooms at the most. I actually saw one a few years ago and almost bought it, but something went wrong with the deal. I'll be looking for another place in two years because my daughter is growing up. We'd still keep the condo and just rent it out. Hopefully, I find my dream house, but it's not a big deal if I don't. It'll just be a ten year investment. Where we live, the market isn't as crazy, and people still pay off their mortgages in 10-15 years. quote:
Would it be different if you're married? I'm not sure. I'm not really firmed on what I want in a house. I'm close to retirement age, so the house isn't as important at this point. If I am married, I envision us spending alot of times outside, so the house is just a place to sleep. So, as long as it's clean, and has alot of space, I'm good. quote:
What if you and your spouse disagree on the kind of house/home? The only real disagreement would be the price and location. I'm easy on the rest. quote:
What if there's a huge differences in where you want to live? Then you work it out until you can't anymore. You both have to be happy at the place you'll both be living. This could be a deal breaker for a lot. I guess for me, it's not. I'm fairly easy going...as long as it's not crowded, I'm good.

All I really want in a house is a functional kitchen, lots of windows, a nice size bathtub, and a cute yard. I don't want too big of a house, even if I do get married. It just makes you accumulate more stuff. OH - a garage would be super nice!

Here's mine: I want a nice house out in the woods, far enough away from the city that you can see the stars in the sky at night, and where there is wildlife coming up into your yard. Like PH, I want to see deer. Of course, I know I'll have to deal with other critters too, like racoons, possums, and armadillos. But there will be owls and other birds to listen to and watch. If it's near water, that's a big plus. There's a place just like this that I will drive out to see every now & then. It's about 10 miles from the interstate and another 10 miles from where I live now. There was not a single grocery store or gas station in between. I think there is more "civilization" a few miles in the other direction, though. Most of the homes in this area are newly-developed and outside my price range. As far as the house, as long as it's a modern home, I'll probably be ok with it. An office/study room will be a must, a comfortable sized kitchen, walk-in closets, etc. I really want a wrap-around porch with a screened-in patio in the back facing the woods. That's where I would do my bible study. Right now, I live in an apartment, so until I'm married, this is fine, or a townhouse would work. If I don't have any prospects by the time I'm financially ready, though, I may just go ahead and buy my dream home, or something close. If I disagree with my spouse... I think that as long as we're not living in a trailer park or in the middle of the city, or in a neighborhood where every house is identical and there's like 7 feet between the houses, I'd be ok. HERE is a picture of a house I like. Not crazy about the all-white color, but it's the right size/style. It just needs a full wrap-around porch. Edited to include picture.

I have a dream location. It's in Colorado or British Columbia. I don't think the details of the house would matter much to me if I found an affordable on in either one of those two places.

Hmmmm.......I guess mine needs to be very near or on water. Even though I know the dangers of such living, water is a comfort for me, so having it near is something I deeply desire. Hey, if it's in the mountains and by a creek, that'd be awesome! I really don't care where it is - just as long as there's water nearby. As far as the house itself - let's see......a jacuzzi tub is a must! That's non-negotiable for me (too many back problems - I need it for the pain relief it gives me). I want a large enough place that I can comfortably have upwards of 20 people over and it not be crowded. I love entertaining! The master bedroom needs to just be comfortable and functional - but with a fire place in it and a separate reading area - so I can just go there and do my bible study. In the kitchen - I want a breakfast nook. And like what Michelle said - a study/den is a must. Oh, I also want a pool (and maybe an outdoor fire area?). Other than that - I'm pretty flexible. I would also like a fireplace in the main functional living area. I don't care about the size (other than for entertainment purposes) or number of bedrooms, etc. I've seen a few floor plans that I really like - I imagine I'll end up building myself - as I don't think I'll find something that I really like that is already built. However, I DID find one on the Gulf of Mexico (I know - very dangerous place to live) that I fell in love with - but unless I marry a millionaire (or become one myself), it's out of the question. But, wow, it was nearly perfect as to what would be my "dream" home. Trust me, I know that reality is going to be much different.

I've always liked Victorian style houses... and I'm doing that dollhouse that I've mentioned on here before.. as my dream house....and I plan on posting pictures when I''m done..so I won't say too much here....though I haven't worked on that for a while.... cause I'm waiting til I finish my bedroom (which I also want to post pictures of) and I can't finish that until I have some spending cash.. and I won't really have spending cash until................... kind of a personal reason that I don't want to discuss on a public forum...if you're curious and IF you're a regular in Singles, you can pm me..... all that to say..yes, I have a certain house in mind, but if I share the details now, it will spoil the fun of the pictures I want to eventually post.

There is a city that I absolutely love (I've lived there before) and I would love to live there again. I felt like I was in the country - because there were so many trails, streams, biking paths, deer and other wildlife (I'm not so enamored with deer because of a freak motorcycle accident I had concerning one - I still have a scar commemorating that "incident"). But, I could drive to the grocery store in three minutes (walk there in 10 or 15), drive to the mall in 10 (walk there in 30), and visit museums, eat in a variety of restaurants, see plays, concerts, etc. - all without being in the car for more than 20 minutes. It was also close to a major metropolitan city (about 1/2 hour away by car if I took the highway) and the economy there was booming. My dream home would be something like this.

OOoh, I could go for some water very near my house. I might settle for hills though. I like where I live now (other than the fact that it is an apartment).

Not much in the world, but its mine. And still needs ~TONS~ of work but I'm getting there. I hope to build two homes here. (yes, Two). I have lived in many apartments and the funny thing is the smallest one was the most efficient. The biggest thing for me is function. Say no to dinning rooms in the middle of traffic patterns. Living rooms that are more like hallways. . Functionality is the biggest deal. Having a house full at holidays and such without tripping over each other would be awesome. I have an idea on paper and want to build a model to see how it all works. Sadly I do have to wait for $$$ to begin building. Boats

I like small places... big houses are inefficient, like you said. I grew up going to my grandparents' house for Thanksgiving & Christmas. It was MAYBE 1200 sq ft and we had maybe 25 people in the house, on the porch, on the carport, and in the yard. Now we're at 60 people and the houses we go to aren't much bigger, but they're comfortable. They're about the size of the house I linked to above.
