I am new to this site and I've always wondered, why did Jesus go to the whipping post? as shown in the Bible: Matt. 27:26-34, Luke 23:24-32 and John 19:16-22. What was the reason for beating Him beyond recognition?

As I recall, that was historically how the Romans would handle people who they were going to execute. It was as much for punishment as it was to make an example of them to others.

Crucifixion was a slow and agonizing way to die, as well as being very humiliating (you're hung out on a cross or stake in an area for everyone to see and ridicule). The people who the Romans would execute in this manner were often (but not always) offenders to Rome itself such as revolutionaries, traitors, or other threats to the Roman empire. The whippings before hand were basically just adding more insult to injury (or should I say, adding more injury to injury) and further showing everyone else what can happen if you dare to go against Rome.

Wow, good question!

Old Testament prophecy tells us:

Isaiah 53:4 Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted. 5 But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. 7 He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, And as a sheep before its shearers is silent, So He opened not His mouth. 8 He was taken from prison and from judgment, And who will declare His generation? For He was cut off from the land of the living; For the transgressions of My people He was stricken. 9 And they made His grave with the wicked-- But with the rich at His death, Because He had done no violence, Nor was any deceit in His mouth.

Exactly what I was thinking, so that by His stripes we WERE healed!

Yes and Amen!

OK. Are we looking for the historical reason here, or the reason why he went for our salvation? Both answers that have been posted in here are right... just from different directions.

(1Pe 2:24) Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.

Thanks

Thank you for every one that made a comment on my question, now I have one more for you. From what I have read so far the beating that was given to Jesus was beyond recognition by the Romans was for our healing. Then why did the Lord beat Jesus also in Isaiah 53:10. was not one beating enough? Or was the Lord beating Jesus for a different reason?

It did not happen in the Old Testament, instead the Old Testament was foretelling what was to happen in the New Testament.

SO HOW DOES THIS ANSWER THE QUESTION THAT WAS ASKED?
