Well there are "bands", but they are more often than not a collection of highly skilled session musicians that are nameless, faceless hired guns to most fans. In much of contemporary urban or black gospel it's the soloist or vocal group that is the focus with musicians being relagated to background status. Considering the heritage of musicianship from the days of Motown to more recent bands such as EWF, The Gap Band, Ohio Players and even Living Colour; why aren't we seeing more urban instrumental groups?

Take a look at modern R&B and I think you'll find the same situation. It's all about the front person and choreography these days. Why this is I can't explain.

Well said. With all the programmed music, musicians are few and far between. The only time you see it is in church.

Nowadays, how the musician earns money is what matters most - at least for the producers. If you don't have much resources you wouldn't get to spread your music that much.
