This is a poll and discussion regarding the political parties active in US politics and elections today. The question is which party you would most closely identify with. To be clear, the question is not what party you anticipate voting for in the presidential or other elections, as that could very well be a different answer.

I'm trying to be inclusive in my options, but if I missed your party (there isn't room for all of them in the poll), be sure to bring it up in discussion!

If you'd like to see more choices, or research any of the above, there is a good, unbiased list at vote-smart.org under "political resources".

I even discovered a party that believes radioactivity is a hoax.

Lots of choices...

i recently abandoned the republican party for a party in the back yard with our dogs.

i'm for the republican beleifs of gov't butting out and not grabbing our hard-earned money, but now i see how futile voting is -- it's already been decided for us who the presidential candidates are.

I have been involved with both the Democratic and Republican party (and was for a time in my youth a leftist of the Marxist variety) and I have to say I am rather forced to be a Republican for the very simply reason that I would never be allowed to articulate my views at a Democratic caucus.

Davy - since there are a lot of different parties - have you thought about adding an "other" option to your poll? If the person chooses it, then they can explain further by posting a message. It might help you to also include people from other countries who might want to answer but don't see a choice that matches theirs.

I'm a Democrat with mildly Libertarian leanings.

I think a better poll would have been about which political ideology one adheres to. Most of the non Republican/Democrat parties are fringe parties that hold extreme views of one sort or another, and I can't imagine a lot of people throwing in with them. Ideology doesn't necessarily have such a rigid platform.

Who is in the conservative party? I know most republicans are conservatives, but that is different than being in the conservative party. Can you tell me who is in the conservative party that is not running as a republican?

The question should be who in the Republican party is not running as a conservative?

I am registered independent. I don't want to associate with a particular party. I also consider myself a libertarian (small L). Again, not affiliating with the party directly because I am not on board with everything.

good point...

mention the words "free enterprise", "capitalism" or "free markets" at a Democrat caucus, and you'll be TARRED and FEATHERED! (and then they would beat you up)

(totally disregarding the fact that those ideals have made our economic system the envy of the world for many, many, many years.....and, while not "perfect", is certainly closer to "perfect" than any other system out there)....

Yeah historic deficits, trade deficits, savings deficit, the dollar at an all time low AND a leadership deficit. They envy us all right! At this rate the country will be bankrupt by 2012. As our debt stands today each man, women and child in the US owes $32,000. But hey! They're pro-life and that's all that matters!

I can't believe you wrote that one day after the biggest one day drop in the Dow in history since the Depression! Republicanism USED TO believe in fiscal responsibility but that went out the window with Reagan!

Are Republicans blind, brainwashed or both!

Independent with very conservative personal values, but I tend to take a more libertarian philosophy in government.

(makes sense to me... YMMV)

I didn't say it was PERFECT....but, healthy economies have UPS and DOWNS....anyone should know that.....(look at the drops in 1987....and other times)...

It certainly beats Socialism and/or Marxism....or ANY OTHER "economic system"....

Yes...you're right....fiscal responsibility IS lacking....I didn't say that was not an issue....

but, that doesn't really have any bearing on the fact that our ECONOMIC SYSTEM, and the principles that it's built on, is the best that there is....hands down....no other even comes close.

The unregulated free-wheeling mortgage loan sector and the price of oil gave us a one two punch. Free markets only work the way they are supposed to when all businesses and businesspeople are ethical and honest. And that sounds like the world we live in, doesn't it?

You comfortable with $14 trillion in debt? I wonder what sort of tyranical taxation our kids will be paying and if Social Security will even exist when it comes their time to collect! Something has got to give otherwise our Treasuury bonds will start to reach junk status and foreign countries will refuse to keep financing our spendfests!

Let us hope it not. Yes, I said it. Time to put a fork in that program, it wasn't created to be permanent and it shouldn't be.

I feel I had to select the Republican Party largely because of the influence of my grandfather who was a staunch Republican for many years, but then lost convidence in both political parties when it came to Congress. He had no use for Congress and the politicians that worked there. I have just about reached the same conclusion.

I have come to the same conclusion that George Washington came to, long ago. All political parties are a danger to our government because they limit political descussion, and possibilities to solutions because they are all conrolled by a relative few number of people.
