I'm always curious what other women are reading in the Bible or what they are studying.

How do you study the Bible? What are you studying right now?

I am studying right now a book called The Bait of Satan. It is very eye opening.

But at church yesterday I am taking a Discipleship Class and my teacher said a very good way to study the Bible is to pick a book of the Bible read it chapter at a time and then rewrite in your own words what the chapter was saying. That made so much sense to me it also made me feel a little stupid that I have never thought of that. I bet that you could do that with the same chapter a 100 times and it would mean something different every time.

Two books...

Beyond Survival (a homeschooling book)
Battlefield of the Mind by Joyce Meyer

I have a (bad) habit of reading part of a book and then not finishing it. I have sworn off the Christian bookstore by my house until I finish all the books I have purchased there in the last couple of years.

We're studying the book of Matthew with the teens on Wednesday nights. We usually do half a chapter to a chapter each week. Just depending on how long the passage is and how it breaks down. I develop the lessons (question sheets for them to study along with, provoke their thoughts) so I spend a lot of time during the week in my Thompson Chain Bible reading the passage and digging deeper into the passages by following the chain.

I LOVE my Thompson Chain Reference Bible. It's what I always study with. I rarely have to break open a commentary.

Personally, I love expository/inductive teaching/study.

I'm not big on book studies. I don't think there's anything wrong with them, they're just not my thing. We're starting one next week in the moms group that I attend. Something by Elizabeth George.

I also teach the teen Sunday school class, and we're just going over the very basics of salvation and spiritual growth and some basic doctrine at this time. Our teens really need discipling on those things right now. So we're studying a lot of different scriptures in there, as pertains to the topic we're discussing that morning. When I develop those lessons, I use my Thompson Chain as well and a journal to write down my outlines and scripture references.

I'm studying spiritual gifts- gift of tongues is this week. In two weeks, my study group will pick back up in Kings with Elisha and continue studying the OT in chronological order. I use the Key Word Study Bible in the NASV. That's my favorite, but not necessarily better than anyother modern, literal translation.

I study inductively, which means I allow the Bible to interpret itself and look at all applicable scripture in context before deciding what I believe. You know, get the whole counsel of God before I start making judgments on the things that are unclear or up for debate. Generally, I don't do topical studies, but study each book of the Bible and just get what God spoke in the order in which He spoke it. I find that I am better prepared for life this way and learn about many topics that I might not question until my circumstances demanded the question of it. I started out with Precept Bible Studies. I usually stay involved in one to help other ladies because studying this way has made such a difference in my relationship with God, but that's not always my main area of study.

The one thing that is important to me is to not read any study material that is not the Bible. If I need an answer to a Biblical question, I go straight there and only look at commentary (whether it be Matthew Henry or a Beth Moore study) if there are no clear scriptural answers, which occasionally there is not- such as questions about Zipporah and Moses' violent encounter with God. The reason I have set this rule for myself is because I get others opinions on scripture all the time- sermons (Sun am, pm, and on radio,) christian music I listen to (at church, CDs, and radio,) friend's opinions (IRL and here,) etc. When that was my main source of info about God, my growth was greatly stiffled and I learned many things that were in direct contradiction to scripture. I am not speaking of interpretation issues, but where scripture is clear and one interpretation is totally false. Anyhow, I get plenty of teachings from other Christians as I go through my life and have decided to shun intentionally adding Christian reading materials or more devotional interpretation based studies.

You can probably tell that I am very passionate about this. Studying inductively has changed my life (for the better) and I would encourage everyone to study scripture for themselves and be very wary of teachings from others. The only way you can know a misinterpretation from a valid interpretation is if you know God intimately and personally. If all you know is out of context gossip (even from good teachers who know Him personally and intimately,) you are in danger of not recognizing Him or His way, as I have found myself at times. Not all teachings and readings are bad, but are to be compared with scripture.

I use books as a thought provocation. I always check the scriptures that are listed in the book and decide if they are correct. I don't take one person's teaching over what I learn through my bible study but sometimes the books can cause you to learn or think of something that maybe you wouldn't have thought of before.

Hopefully that makes sense. It does in my head and sometimes it doesn't when I type it out.

I'm still trying to find the best way of studying the Bible for myself. In the past I have liked guides that take one topic and then jump all over the Bible.

I also need to write things down for me to really get it.

Currently, I have a devotional book that takes you through the entire Bible from start to finish. I decided to use this because I haven't actually read most of the Old Testament, and this has a good guide. I just started recently so I'm still working through Genesis.

I'm also doing a character study of Tamar. I'm using the Francine Rivers Lineage of Grace series, and using the bible studies in the back of the books. When I'm done the women, I plan to move on to the men. (I'm not sure what that series is called.)

That's a good way... I wasn't diligent to do that and was wasn't mature enough to make sure scripture wasn't taken out of context when I set up my "rules." I may be capable of doing that now, but I have decided to err on the side of overprotecting myself.

In my bible I'm reading Mark, and a book about Gods grace. At sunday school we are learning about the end times, and at bible study we are learning about leadership. My pastors sermons have been about growing in the Lord and knowing his purpose for our lifes. That is very helpful to me.

Hear, hear!

I don't use many "Bible studies" for that same reason. I'm not at all opposed to using them as a springboard for personal study, but one should never take something at face value just because a "popular Christian author" wrote it. Ever.

James 1:5
If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.

It doesn't take somebody "special" to understand God's Word. Just ask him - sincerely - before you read, to show you what it is he wants you to glean from his Word today. He will do it.

Now, to answer the question LOL, at the moment I am in the middle of 2 Chronicles, at the end of Esther (Ezra is next), and just starting Luke.

Right now I'm reading Ephesians (just started last night) and I'm reading a book called Healing Stones. I also read one page a day from the book "Choosing Life One Day at a Time". Along with a few points each night from "Checklist for Life for Women"

Actually I just started reading the Bible for the FIRST time EVER a couple weeks ago. I'm having to read very slowly to let it all sink in, but last night I was so proud that I finally finished Matthew, which is the book I started with...hey, a journey of a thousand miles starts with one step - lol!

I'm also reading a book called, "Praying the Scriptures." Again, I'm having to read that slowly as well, but I'm really enjoying it.

I don't typically read bible studies or Christian books at all really. I do have Vintage Jesus on the back burner, but I won't start that until I finish Middlesex, Geek Mafia and Miracle in the Andes.

As far as actually studying the bible...our church is doing a "read the NT in a year" plan and I'm playing along. (I'm reading the books in the order I want instead of exactly following the plan.) So anyway, this past week I spent a lot of time in the Timothys and Colossians and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I hadn't read any of those books in a good long while.

Zippy, I've not heard of Precept Bible Studies before. It sounds interesting... can you elaborate a bit more?

I'm currently trying to figure out a direction to go w/studying right now.

Tonight, my son and I (there's a childrens group)will be studying "The Life of Moses" for the next 9 months. This will be my 5th year going through this particular bible study group. I love it and stay accountable for reading the word with others.
