We've been with Vonage for quite a while. We like them--we've saved quite a bit off our phone bills. Very good service. Having been with them a few years, I'm sure glad we switched.

Had a short blackout today that knocked out my phone line. Usually it will just reset automatically but not this time. After several minutes online with my ISP trying to figure out why I wasn't getting connected to the internet he realizes that I had to change my password recently and the old password wasn't changed on the hardware side of things. So we go into the router settings and change the password. That worked. The internet was back up and so was Vonage.

We had vonage for 3 years and that was 4 years too long.

No one could understand me. THe sound was fine on our end but the other end got "packetized" meaning that the sound got condensed, played back after long silent gaps so fast that few could understand.

I have a package deal with Comcast. I've been pretty impressed except when we lose power.

Unlimited free long distance.

I know I have experienced periods where we were breaking up to other callers. Recently it was after the earthquake and lasted about a week then went away. You can always call Vonage and see if they can clear it up. I believe that AT&T has a VOIP plan now too.

I know Vonage has worked great for us. There must be something to it because AT&T and others are getting into the VOIP market too.

I have Vonage, I love it. Not only do I not need a phone line, but when I got it I set my "local number" to a city 3 hours away where my consulting jobs were coming from, so they would be local to my employers. I've even moved, and all it took was unplugging it from one company's cable modem and pluggin it into the next company's cable modem. I haven't had any problems at all. I would note that if you do have problems, it's probably more likely to be the fault of your internet provider than Vonage.

I've read a lot of complaints about Magic Jack. First is that you have to have your computer on at all times for it to work. Second if you have a problem the company has telephone number to call and speak to anyone. Third a lot of people said they were charged up front instead of after the 30 day trial and other who tried to cancel said the company would not start the refund process until after the 30 day trial period ends. Forth, and to me this is a biggie, they may not be able to provide you with a local area code for your phone number. Of course their are always complaints about sound and voice with any service provider and at $40 start up cost it might not be a bad deal just to use it as a second line when needed (if it works for you).

We had it too and had no problems with it. I only dropped it because I didn't use it that much and didn't want to pay for a phone line I never used. I have enough minutes on my cell for what I need

Vonage
The thing I like about Vonage as opposed to other options is the hardware base. Vonage has its own router so you don't have to have your computer on all the time for it to be active. I'm really not sure you even need one connected once you set it up? ($25/month)

Magic Jack
OTOH, you have Magic Jack which uses a USB plug in and your computer has to be on for it to operate. The guy who invented this device is a telephone expert and has build up a reliable telephone network. One big problem reported from Magic Jack customers is the availability of local numbers being absent. Good for making calls but not good for receiving calls. It is marketed as a landline replacement. ($20/year)

Skype
Then you have Skype which is software based and again you will have to have your computer up and running for this to work. There is no hardware so this means no connections. You use your computer resources for communication. This includes the sound card, speakers and mic connections. A lot of people use Skype. Most of the computer professionals I come in contact with have a Skype number listed on their business cards as well as in their e-mail signatures. Skype is not marketed as a landline replacement. (FREE to other Skype members; $3/month plus $30/year for personal phone number)

So here are three companies who use VOIP and all address it through different technologies. To find out more about these companies and the way they utilize VOIP technology just click on the title name to visit their site. You may just decide to get all three! Most offer various plans and while some have phone numbers you can contact if you are having trouble some don't. This is something to take into consideration when making any kind of purchase.
