This is a thread for parents to discuss what they do or will do regrading vaccines with their children. It is a place to share information, discuss books on the topic, and get advice from other parents about vaccines and vaccine schedules.
PLEASE do not use this thread as a debate thread. This thread is not to debate whether it is wrong to not vaccinate or public safety issues. This thread is for parents to discuss their vaccination plans for their individual children.

hello - i have heard of people spacing out the shots that should be done at the age of two.
do people know sites for reading up on this strategy?

I have just started reading The Vaccine Book by Dr. Sears. I am finding it very informative, neither pro- nor anti-vaccine, just information on each individual vaccine. Great book, and I highly recommend it for any parent who just wants to know what is being injected into their child.
There are also suggested schedules for delaying vaccines in the book, though I have not read that far yet. I'm not sure if you could find those online also...will have to look.
One of the things Dr. Sears stresses over and over in this book is that some vaccines may be more important for some kids. A breastfed baby who does not go to daycare or even the church nursery has a much smaller risk of contracting a disease that would be vaccinated against than a child who is around other young children (other than siblings) from a very young age. Breastmilk passes on some antibodies to the baby, which protects them at least minimally from some things, so formula fed babies will also be at higher risk.

I should add our plans...our first child (8) has been fully vaccinated. He has other health issues that put him at higher risk than most children. Our 3 year old has had everything but varicella (chicken pox). If she has not had chicken pox by puberty, we will have her immunity level tested and then give the vaccine if needed. Our 15 month old has had reactions to every single vaccine he has had...high fevers for days, large lumps on his legs, screaming day and night for days. We will be waiting until he is at least 2 years old to do the MMR and will probably split them up. We will also wait for the varicella for him.
We are expecting a new baby in September. So far, my thoughts are that we will not do any shots before 3 or 4 months. When we do them, they will be one at a time, and we will start with the ones that we feel the baby is at most risk for. So far, in reading the book, I believe we will start with the DTaP, then a dose of Hib a month later, then the second dose of DTaP a month after that, etc. I think we will skip Prevnar and rotavirus altogether, as both have high levels of reactions and the greatest risk is for babies in daycare. Our children don't even go to the church nursery until they are about a year, at which point those two vaccines are not as important anyway. I expect this baby will be mostly vaccinated by the age of 3. They will just be more spread out, but he or she will have most of them still.
Those are our thoughts so far...but I am still researching, so it's not set in stone yet. We have also found a pediatrician who is willing to go with our wishes on this. I plan on bringing The Vaccine Book with me to every appointment.

I don't think Canada does the rotavirus ones at all.
Jacob ended up getting the routine shots at 2 months. I did not notice a reaction at all. Does that mean that the same shots given later will also not affect him?
I'm thinking of delaying or separating the MMR shot for him.

I vaccinated my kids on schedule never ever questioning my Dr.. . My kids are now 13 and 14 and dd just had her high school physical in which she received a tetenus/pertussis booster and a menegitus(sp?) shot. NO reactions ever. Both of my kids are healthy and do not have compromised immune systems. I actually had a German measels shot after I had my son in '94 because the Dr. said that I wasn't immune to it. I guess we adults need boosters too.

We didn't vaccinate our two kids until they were 5 and 6. My kids still haven't had the MMR yet (and my son still wound up with autism, so I can't use the vaccine reason) as I wanted to space them out, and then we couldn't afford so many doctor visits. I homeschool so they are home most of the time. I'm getting ready to change doctors again and hopefully can get them both back on schedule. I will need to get Dd tested for immunity for Chickenpox as she's never had them. If she's not immune, then I will probably add that vaccine to her docket.

Rotavirus is done in Canada if your child will be in daycare, otherwise they don't do it.
We are currently spacing Dd's vaccinations. She is 17 months. She hasn't received her MMR yet, will start getting it after she turns two. She hasn't received two shots at the same time since she was 6 months old.
With our next children, I will look into spacing them from the beginning. We never had any problems with Dd receiving her shots, but it doesn't mean our next kids would be immune.
We do plan to have all of our children vaccinated before they start school for the required ones, but HPV, Hep B, Flu, and Chicken Pox will all be refused.

My niece is cared for at home by her mother, and she contracted rotavirus after she turned 1. It was absolutely awful. She's a petite girl to begin with, and rotavirus just decimated her. She got scary thin.
Watching her go through that convinced me it was worth the risk. We've pretty much vaxed on schedule for everything. Nathan only had a reaction to the 12 month shots, with a red knot in his leg and some fever.

I don't have kids, but I've been following the different vaccine threads here on crosswalk, and I've been talking to my mom about them, and she told me she did delayed/spaced vaccines on us! Who ever knew? I didn't.

We had an outbreak in an elementary school here 2 or 3 years ago. The DTaP (pertussis vaccine isn't available on its own) is the first one we will do, for that reason.

This is such a hard thing because no matter what you do, you might end up having a child in a life threatening or just bad health situation. If you vaccinate, and they have side affects, then you think back and wonder why, but if you don't vaccinate and they come into contact with something they should have been vaccinated for, then you are on the other end wishing you would have vaccinated.
I had my kids vaccinated all on schedule and had no problems. But I will admit that when we had that measles "outbreak" here, I was worried since my smallest one only had her first MMR shot and wasn't eligable for her second until she turned 4.

We've always vac. on schedule with no problems. The rotavirus one is fairly new, so my children didn't have that one. My youngest daughter landed in the hospital for a week last year with rotavirus. (She was two at the time.) Until then, I had never even heard of it. Afterwards, I researched it a bit and was just in tears over the medical blessings and opportunities that we have in this country.

After reading through the MMR chapter in the book, I think we may wait until Levi is 3 or 4 to start it, and then do one every six months to a year, starting with rubella, then mumps, then measles. He does need his 4th DTaP soon, but since he's had three shots and already has partial immunity (first shot supposedly gives 50% and each one raises it), we'll wait until he's two for that one.

Hunter has had all his vaccines on schedule with no effects from them. I did reschedule his last set of shots because he had a cough, runny nose, and low grade fever. He just got them a week and a half ago so they were not delayed that much, but enough that he could get over his little cold. I am not comfortable giving a baby vaccines if they are sick and the immune system is already fighting something.

HERE is our schedule.
We delay and selectively vax, although the only ones we have skipped so far are Rotavirus and Hep B. We also won't be doing Gardasil. Oh, and Varicella will wait until she's about 12 and then we will have her titered, if she doesn't have an immunity then she'll get the vax.

Do you mind discussing why? This is one I am not decided on for sure, and have 8 or so years before I need to decide. I wouldn't do it if she were old enough now, because it is so new. The reason I am not decided is because while I hope my daughter makes right and Godly decisions about sex before marriage, there is no guarantee her future husband will also. And then there is the chance of being raped...so I'm not decided on this one.

Here is the recommended list for vaccinations in Ontario. (you have to scroll down for the chart)
I see a few differences. They don't give the rotavirus or hep A one unless we request it, and hep B isn't given at birth, in fact it's not done until the kids are in grade 7.
Are vaccinations publicly funded or do you have to pay? If you pay out of pocket rather than through insurance, how much does it cost for the vaccinations? I'm curious, since I've never seen how much it costs.

On the Gardasil, we won't be making that decision for her because there is NO way to get HPV other then through sexual contact. It's new, and the side effects they are seeing right now are not something I will risk even in 10 years. My hope, and prayer is that she will be smart enough to remain abstinate until marriage, or at least until she is old enough and well educated enough to make her own decision in regards to the vaccine.
I have HPV that I got from my DH and while it stinks, it is certainly not the end of the world.
Lexie, I don't think Hep A is standard here. I have not heard of anyone getting it other then those in the military. Oh, and vaccinations are free at the health department or you can make a donation. We just get ours from the Pediatrician so it's covered by our insurance.

That seems like an awful lot for a 12 mo. 
The others I'm not as concerned about, but would still be very important to be caught up on if we go back to Ethiopia.
