Hey fellow youth workers. I need prayer. To make a very long story brief I applied for youth Pastor at my churches youth group i'm 26 years old and I am five classes away from an AA in Christian Ministry from New orleans Baptist Seminary in Miami. We have situation in my church where one of the other youth in the church who just started seminary wants the position as well because and he's doing some very shady things to get the position. Two parents are going from house to house to new Christians who have kids in the youth group talking bad about the youth group and the interim youth pastor. (We have an interim youth pastor until we hire someone the interim has visions of starting his own church) Well these parents dont like the changes we have made (more of a contemporary service ie start on time, 3 worship songs, opening prayer, preaching, 1 worship song, end prayer and then fellowship - sevice lasts exactly 1 hour and 10 minutes) This guy is also using his prayer class on wednesday nights right before my bible study for high school students and his sunday school lesson to say what is wrong with the youth group and that if he becomes youth pastor hell change it for the better, and he is turning everyone against the interim youth pastor. He is missing 85% of the requirements to even be considered for youth pastor in our church but the pastor has said if the church likes him we have to put him (He is very well liked by all the old people including the religous persons of the church since he talks the talk very well - Youth have even come to me to ask for guidance about a certain sin because if they go to him he just tears them up biblically without even a chance to find out why they are in this or how to get out). I meet all the requirements but they said sometimes I lack confidence, I don't know what to do. I have already seen one youth group die in my past when i myself was one of them and i do not want to see another one die. The interim youth pastor including myself and four others brought this dying youth group from ten kids to 60 in 3 months and you can see the change that is happening in their lives but all these adults and this other guy see are the games that we set up for fellowship as a distraction and that we need to have more prayer. This guy even went as far as to say that if we have problems and weve made it to the prayer list in church (meaning that we really have problems) that we should be in the prayer meeting at 9 in the morning on sundays because if not we really dont care about our problems. ( My fiance is on that list because her cousin has cancer) He has also said that he doesnt hang around with the other kids because he "is in a higher spiritual level than they are"(he is 24) i do not want to see another youth group die if i have something to say about it. (Under his administration 3 months prior to his applying he was part of the youth leadership commitee and the youth almost died we only had 10 people going on saturdays) (the pastor took him out and gave us three months to turn the youth around and we did just that) I cant do anything because I don't want to look like i'm campaigning for the position as some youth can see right through that and then I will look like I am just making this stuff up because i want the position. I dont think the Pastor know that they are doing this the interim youth pastors parents tried to tell him but he said it's just heresay. I feel like Jehosafat who was surrouded by all of his enemies. I feel like all the cards are stacked against me. It almost seems hopeless for me even though have all the requirements. Would God really allow a person to get youth pastor by such shady ways?

I will pray that God's Will be done; that the person who will most represent Christ will be the leader of the youth; whomever that may be. Thanks RC

I feel like all the cards are stacked against me. It almost seems hopeless for me even though have all the requirements. Would God really allow a person to get youth pastor by such shady ways? At age 13 months, I ran into the hospital room, eager for a reunion with my missing mother. There was a tiny stranger in her arms. I turned around and walked out, dethroned. I was no longer the sole and absolute center of my mother's universe. Once upon a time, I wanted to be a small group leader in my church more than almost anything. I played by the rules, year after year. And watched a whole string of folks drop in from out of nowhere, gobble up the recognition and titles, then casually discard the opportunities I so desperately yearned for, prepared for ... [0] Well, that was my story. After 20 years with that church, my vocation required us to relocate to where the jobs were. I have a few low-profile positions of service in our new church, very satisfying. Home schooling four children has been the most important "ministry" thing I've done during that time. We've recently expanded our horizons to include family outreaches to young couples from a Muslim nation who are here as grad students. At age 57, I am gearing up to write a dissertation that will, I pray, open doors for the gospel in the Muslim world. John Monzano, a gifted teacher, once said, "The decades of our lives are small change in God's pocket. He can spend them on bubble gum if it pleases Him." You may not want to hear this, but it's not unusual for a vision to hibernate for 20 or 30 years. God directed me away from grad school in 1979, since I had real-world lessons to learn. At this point, though, I am holding down a full-time job while pursuing a doctorate, investigating issues that have fascinated me for more than 30 years. Call me a late bloomer. I acquired a worthless BA in Humanities, since I intended to be a preacher, and calculus (real-world training) was too much like hard work. When I was 30, thanks to the book What Color is Your Parachute, God informed me that I was a technical writer. It took a series of miracles to get me into that line of work, and an MS in Corporate and Professional Communication (1992) to open the doors to serious income. The desperation in your post leads me to wonder -- what is your day job? How long will your beloved be willing to wait for you to find a "ministry" slot? Since most[1] evangelical kids who come up through youth groups desert the church soon after growing up anyways, is there a more Biblical and powerful venue for your passions? Such as, your own children? God has better things for you than frantic frustration. "A man's gifts make room for him." Take a chill pill, read Psalm 37, and be assured that I am praying for you, your fiancee, and the bouncy offspring you'll beget to change the world. [0] None of these "supplanters" had, for example, even bothered to learn NT Greek! [1] At this point, according the latest nation-wide statistical research, more than 90% of evangelical kids who attend public schools no longer think like Christians. Most home school kids do, and want to raise their kids the same way.
