I just thought about this again because ds2's birthday was Friday. He is 4 now. We have a 5 year old, a 4 year old, and a 2 year old. I can't think of anything unusual hubby did during the birthing of our first...he was very nervous and very excited. But during the birthing of our second, also done by a midwife at her home, while I'm in the middle of laboring, not pushing yet, but everything is "coming together," he decides to go take a shower. I look at him like he's crazy, his sisters do as well, but I say nothing as I have bigger things to worry about. I still don't know why he went to take a shower at that moment. He'd had a shower earlier that evening, I do believe. My water broke while he was in the shower. LOL Dd is our youngest, and I don't remember him doing anything unusual for that one either... I just wanted to see if anyone else had some unusual hubby experiences during child laboring/birth.

My mom never had a labor over 2.5 hours. With my sister, she gave birth in the hospital hallway, on a gurney...while my dad was eating her ice chips! I guess he thought they were his.

My dh stood by my head alternately worrying that I was being too loud (thinking the staff would use that as an excuse to say I was in trouble) and putting on his brave face "Don't touch my wife with your knife" attitude.

He is always incredibly supportive through the pregnancy and with all the drama we go through being non-conformists but by the time we get to actual labor, he doesn't really know what to do with himself.

I have to say this for him though, last time I specifically requested that he hold/comfort me when I asked, and he did that the whole time I labored at home. As a matter of fact, he was a bit put-out when I got to a point where I didn't want him to hold me any more through contractions.

I don't know that this is unusual, but the last half of my pushing the doctor kept mentioning c-section. I am getting mad and pushing away refusing to give in when I notice I no longer see my husband. My mom next to me, but no hubby. Then all of a sudden I saw him and the poor guy was pacing the floor in the back of the room. He was so worried about what was going to happen, but I have to say if my mom wouldn't have been there I would have been all alone. Hopefully things go smoother next time and there is no mention of a c-section.

I think the only labor when he did anything unusual was with Rachel. She was born during finals week of his freshmen year in college, and he had been up a long time, so he slept on the couch while I labored. I finally woke him up when I got the point where I really needed him, though. I think he also studied for awhile, since he had an exam in the morning.

I do remember during Abby's labor that he went to take the kids to his mom's house and I wasn't sure he was going to make it back before she was born! He got there just in time, though.

The most unusual thing to happened when I was in labor with my first. We lived out on a farm about 12 miles from the hospital. My husband, my Mother, & I came out to get in the car. My Mother put my suitcase in the car while my husband got into the back seat. She got into the car & they drove away without me. They went for several miles before they realised I was not with them. They did return to take me along also. I had several hour at the hospital before the baby was born so no harm was done except I never let them forget that they had forgotten me.

My husband didn't do anything unusual during my labour. I could tell he was bored (17 hours from when we checked into the hospital) and I kept telling him to sleep but he wouldn't.

Actually, now I remember him playing the Nintendo DS a lot, but he put it down when I started pushing.

My mom said that during one birth (I can't remember if it was mine or my sisters) my dad went home to check the mail.

I fear that my labor will be spent with my husband working doing tech support since he is the sole IT guy at our hospital.... Every time we go anywhere people are asking him computer questions...

The only unusual thing my husband did was cry...lol. I was having a very hard time and some complications, and when they came in after 36 hours of labor and said there was still no change, he cried. He couldn't stand seeing me in pain like that. I went a few more hours after that, but I have never seen a man so relieved as when they told him I needed a c-section. I remember saying I was sorry because it was going to cost a fortune(we were paying for the delivery ourselves) and he said "I don't care...I can't handle any more of this" Yea...should have been on MY end of things...lol!

Micah had worked the night before(8pm-6am) so he slept for the majority of the day after he got off work. He did stay up and sit with me until I got the epidural, but after that he either slept or played computer games. I suppose that is weird to some people but since I was in zero pain and just watching tv....

Oh, Erin!! I feel for you!

My husband got a call on his cell phone from someone he works with (but doesn't know, and doesn't deal with) who is based out of another state. This poor person that got my husband on the phone....my husband was so nervous (it was about 3 hours before the baby was born) that he wasn't very polite to the guy. He just said "I'm away from home and out-of-pocket right now so I can't help you. You'll have to call someone else."

(I.T. guys are supposed to ALWAYS have their computers [<--plural] with them and be ready to work, right?)

I really thought it would have been classic for him to say to the guy "I would like to help you out but my wife is giving birth right now so I'm a little distracted...." Then I could have obliged with a fakey loud labor scream. He didn't ever tell the guy we were giving birth that day but it would have been funny if he had! (It was a Sunday morning, by the way, when he got this call. SUNDAY MORNING. Palm Sunday even.)

Maggie, that cracks me up that you were loud during labor. I was super quiet. (And yes, I know that for sure!)

With the labor for my oldest hubby was in the Navy and he had been on duty for 48 hours. So I was watching I Love Lucy cause it was the only thing that would distract me from the pain and he was obviously trying to sleep since it was 3:30 and he actually asked me to turn off the TV and to stop crying he was trying to sleep.

With the youngest he was sleeping and I woke him up to tell him the baby was coming he got up and said does it have to be right now I'm sleeping.

LOL ... my hubby has slept through all of my labours ... and it's not like they were long -- or at night ... we're talking about daytime hours here, and no more than 13 at the absolute most. He usually falls asleep soon after we arrive at the hospital, and wakes up about 30 minutes prior to me needing to push. With this one, we are planning a home birth ... so I've told him that just because it is his bed too, he doesn't get to hog it and sleep the whole time ... he has to play the role of the hospitable host for myself and my birth attendants!! LOL

Oh Erin, I have one of those and my ex was also. I so totally understand where you are comming from. Those people have brains that are wired so differently from normal people. BUT during my labor with Jake, I remember my ex husband and my mom talked for the longest time. I was tired so I slept but I was in that in between type sleep where I could hear things that were going on, but couldn't bring myself to open my eyes until the doc came in and broke my water. Then there was no sleeping. I just remember that Jake was here within about 45 minutes to an hour of them breaking my water.

As for my current husband, he was bored and kept asking if he really needed to be there with me the whole time. (I was being induced) I was dying for a movie, and I had videos but the hospital didn't have a VCR to play them in so I asked him to go home and get them since we didn't know how long I would be there. He did, but by the time he came back, one of the nurses brought me a tv with a VCR and I watched Anne of Green Gables. He was not happy with my choice of movies, but it didn't matter because when I was 4cm the doc broke my water and Kali was here within half an hour of that.

When I had Kay, my husband knew better than to ask me if he really needed to be there and was the perfect coach, husband and dad the entire time.

My dh has the job of operating the TENS machine when it gets to the point I can't do it any more. I have found this support INVALUABLE and it makes him feel very much a part of my labour as well as keeping him busy. He also holds the mouthpeice at the end for the gas and air.

My second stage is very fast - In both pregnancies I have gone from being told 'you're not in labour' (when I know I am!) to 1-10 cm in an hour. This last time I had to go into the hospital as there was meconium in my waters. I had to labour on a horrible hospital bed and remember hearing him fussing to the midwife because my leg was pressed up against the metal sides (I was on my knees). I couldn't actually feel anything in that region of my body and he was really annoying me. That is the only time I remember being annoyed with him in my labours.

The other thing he does is to watch the midwive's monitor which shows the intensity of my contractions - it helps him to know when to turn the TENS up. He has a way of sitting there - as if watching a football match, controls in hand - and shouting things like "YES!! That was a good one!" - or when there are several all together "Here comes one!!!" (thanks honey !). Its quite funny and cute.

Will's a nervous eater. While I was in labor with my first, he actually ate three dinners. Family would come to see us and offer to take him down to the cafeteria for dinner or bring him something from a drive through... needless to say, I don't think he ate at all the next day.

Oh, I totally forgot this one!

When we came to the hospital for Gebre's birth I was in *heavy* labor. A young nurse got on the elevator with us, and dh immediately started up a conversation about nursingn with her. Education, testing, American nursing practices, etc. She had to get off on a floor below ours, and he held the door open and kept talking to her as she was leaving, while I was hanging on to the railing for dear life in the middle of a contraction. I think I may have snapped at him at that point.

I wasn't in pain so much as I really, really didn't want my water to break or the baby to "fall out" while we were sitting in the elevator.

My husband did the same as yours, VisitorinWaiting; except he went HOME to shower. The doctor broke my water and said, well..we are going to have a baby today. My husband thought that meant LATER in the day so he went home to shower. My sister called him later and told him if he wanted to see his child come into the world he had better get himself back to the hospital immediately. He made it just in time.

After our son was born, he has that weird looking white stuff on him that some newborns have. My husband asked the doctor, "That stuff is going to come off, isn't it?"

My hubby left to get fast food and he sneaked feeding it to me when no one was around. Like he actually held the burger when I took bites so we wouldn't get busted. Then when a nurse came in, she kinda gave him a look like it was rude that he was eating in front of me when I hadn't eaten in like 20 hours LOL! She asked me if it bothered me that he was eating (in her "I'm your nurse and it's my job to destroy anyone who bothers you" voice), and I said no. Hehee!

I think that's part of what killed me with Will eating three dinners during Marshall's labor. He was our first and we were very much in the "Obey-the-Nurses-even-if-it-seems-silly" phase. I was STARVING and he'd eaten so much he felt sick!

Talking about food in labour ... I'm so glad I used a midwife with #4 and have her again with #5 ... if you use an OB around here, once you are at the hospital, everything is off limits except ice chips ... and if the pitocin is started, ice chips are a no-no too. With a midwife, they tell ya to fully stock a cooler and haul it in with ya "The fuller the cooler, the shorter the labour".

Funny thing with #4 ... dh forgot to grab the cooler, so midwife told him he needed to make it up to me, since I hadn't yet had breakfast (water broke at 5am) ... sent him to McD's for a breakfast meal for me, and told him as penance, he could have the ice chips ... LOL!!! (He got himself a meal as well, but the look on the midwife's face was priceless when she was 'scolding' him!!!)

This is funny Kara. You mentioned not being able to have ice chips once they started the pitocin. Yikes! When they gave me pitocin, everything escalated so quickly that I didn't even have time to think about hunger or thirst. With each contraction, I was saying with my breathing, "I hate pitocin, I hate pitocin, I hate pitocin." I went from about a 4 on the pain scale to a 10 in a matter of seconds after that stuff got started. Wow. (BTW, I had the first two at the midwife's house, and the third one in the hospital only because we moved to another state and didn't want to try to find a midwife that we liked and trusted in a state where we knew no one!)

I went into labor on Wednesday, mid-day. Thursday night, my mom brought dinner...for my XH and Brandon, and NONE FOR ME! I asked here where mine was, and she said, 'you can't eat while you are in labor'. Um, we are already at 36 hours here...with no end in sight! You can bet I am gonna eat!

Poor Brandon...Mommy stole his chicken nuggets.
