Hello, I have a younger sister that lives with me who has a rare lymph cancer. She has been told that she only has 3 -6 mos. left by the doctors. This was May 3rd. Before this she was a healthy woman with 5 kids. Lots of family who are Christians have been coming over telling her stuff like God is punishing you because everyone is given 70 years to live. Or what are you doing wrong, you must don't have faith. God can get you off your bed. You have'nt reached your potential yet. I have been totally confused. I'm like we all die, right? Any verses to help with this? It is tearing my sister up. She was at peace now she is upset all the time.

it might be good to find a pastor that would not take that approach and have him visit. a pastor would come across with authority and credibility, and you could be an ongoing affirmation of hope and grace. logically speaking 70 years is about a average life span otherwise everyone would expire before their 71st birthday.

It would seem that a lot of the supposed Christian family members are sorely confused and telling non-truths to your sister. We live in a fallen world and stuff happens. If she is saved and confivent in that salvation there is no need for her remaing months to be miserable. But they can be times of growing closer to the Lord, and a sign of strength to others. I rely on the attitude of the three children of Israel when they were facing the prospect of being thrown into the firey furnace. they said this; (Dan 3:16) Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, answered and said to the king, O Nebuchadnezzar, we are not careful to answer thee in this matter. (Dan 3:17) If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king. (Dan 3:18) But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up. These men had faith that God was able and would deliver them, but they said that even if they were not delivered they would not turn their backs on God. Power stuff. I and my Church will be praying for your sister. Thsnks RC

I am so sorry that your sister has to deal with fools like this (even if they are relatives). I would be doing my utmost to stop those people from visiting, even if they were relatives. No one needs to hear stuff like that and it's just plain cruel.

Your sister is receiving the same advice Job received. They were wrong then and they are still wrong. Nobody knows the mind of God. It is a supreme test of faith for her, but her reward will be eternal. I too will be praying for her.

I believe your sister should surround herself with warm, healthy, and spiritually mature Christians. Have a good Pastor come to visit and pray over her and probably anoint her with holy oil/water. Show her your unconditional love. Many terminal diseases are curable nowadays. Don't trust what the doctors always say. Your sis will be in my daily thoughts and prayers. Please keep us posted about her situation! Blessings!

Tracydolls, I'm glad others mentioned Job. Friends can be so wrong and at a time like this it is especially hurtful. Ask your family members who are speaking these things to your sister about Job. Perhaps they'd like to read about Job and then make a return visit. Anyway, bless you for desiring the truth for your sister! LL

I would not allow that sort of negativity around your sister. At this time she needs those who can uplift her, encourage her, pray with and for her and not some doomsday bunch draining her of her resources.

I really hate when people tell me to "not accept the sickness" and the sickness will leave; ONLY Christians tell me this. I didn't invite my illnesses in...but they're here. I don't get it, but apparently if I don't want the illness then it won't be here...or I'm lacking in faith, or someone in my family is lacking in faith....the list goes on. I might have cancer right now; we're not sure yet. I do know I have some other diseases that make life hard and physically/emotionally painful, but they won't directly kill me. I imagine your sister (and the family) is already having a rough time; I do know this one thing from experience... Get away from the people who are saying these things, if not for anything else, to give her as much peace as possible and take that stress away. As far I know I'm not terminally ill, but "those people" cause so much stress and frustration that's not even worth the time and my higher bp. Plus some seem set to make ones illness their fault by some great evil they've done. It's definitely not worth the stress.

Tracy, Tony Snow wrote an article in Christianity Today about his cancer and his faith. An organization I a familiar with posted it on their web-site. LINK. A Bible story which has strengthened my faith is found in Mark 2:1 - 12 about a paralytic whom Jesus healed. What most people miss about that story is that the real miralce was the forgiveness of the man's sin. In fact, that is the first thing Jesus said to the man. The physical healing was secondary to the wonderful, undeserved gift of forgiveness. What is the cause of all suffering and affliction in the world? When God made the world He made it perfect and without death, pain, or suffering. When sin entered the world so did death and every affliction leading to death (Rom 5:12). The New Earth will also be perfect, with no sin, pain, or death (Rev 21:4). When Jesus removes our sin He makes us ready to be with Him for eternity. The forgiveness of sin is, indeed, the greater miracle because of the eternal results. Real healing can come only after the forgiveness of sin. Healing may come in this world through a glorious miracle like this story or it may come after we pass from this world to be with Him for eternity. Either way, Christ is glorified for who He is and what He has done. The people in Jesus’ day focused only on the physical and almost completely discounted the spiritual. They could not recognize that the Scriptures which prophesied the coming Messiah were being fulfilled in their midst. They refused to accept His deity even after witnessing several miracles. Jesus said in Luke 16:31 that if they do not respond to Moses and the Prophets (the Bible of their day) they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead. We have the same problem today. The importance is placed on the physical and not the spiritual. What is of true significance is the forgiveness of our sins – the righteousness which only Christ can grant us. This is eternal! This is the true miracle… one which requires true faith in who Christ is and the suffering which He did on our behalf. Tracy, I hope this can bring comfort to your sister. I will be praying for her, her children, and for you as you care for her.

Thank you guys for all the prayer and thanks Dubya for the link, I'm gonna show it to my sister. I want to ask 2 sisters in particular not to come back. They attend Churches that preach name it and claim it. And have been coming or calling almost everyday to spew mess. If you listened to them, NO one should die and if you do, something is wrong with your faith. What do people think about these verses? Isa 57:1 The righteous perisheth, and no man layeth it to heart: and merciful men are taken away, none considering that the righteous is taken away from the evil to come. Isa 57:2 He shall enter into peace: they shall rest in their beds, each one walking in his uprightness. Isa 57:3 But draw near hither, ye sons of the sorceress, the seed of the adulterer and the whore. Isa 57:4 Against whom do ye sport yourselves? against whom make ye a wide mouth, and draw out the tongue? are ye not children of transgression, a seed of falsehood,

I hate it when people misunderstand and misrepresent what could be good news. I and my church will continue to pray for her healing. You're doing the right thing in asking them not to come back.

You know the story in the Bible about the boy who was blind..who sinned here, this boy or his parents, that he was blind? and Jesus said it was so that God could be glorified. I think that would be hanging on my front door. In large print.

Tracydolls, All I can say is the scripture tell us "It is appointed to man to die and after death the judgement. You said your sister was saved. She has nothing to do with her date with death. That date I believe based on scripture was set by God Himself. I don't blaim you for wanting to keep those people away from her. I wish I could offer some comfort but I can't. I can however talk to The Comforter and will. Your sister will be in my prayers tonight. God Bless

These people who are coming over should no longer be able to visit her. From what you say there is no encouragement or building up. Where does it say that every single human being is given only 70 years to live? Where are they getting the idea from that God is punishing her? Why are they assuming that she must have done something wrong? She doesn't have enough faith? The only thing they said right was that God can get her off the bed.

Anyone that mean spirited is also ignorant. Tracy, had I been the pastor in this instance, I would have asked these women to leave myself, and not return until they had repented and convinced me that their arduous use of Bible passages would not be used to harm or mistreat people.

It might be good to enlighten them by putting their passages into context. The fact is that the Bible shows that many times we are called to suffer... not for punishment - but for His glory.. and God is always with us in those times.

My sincere condolences on your sister's sickness. May the Lord, in His mercy, lend her the grace to get through this difficult situation. I think that you will need to play interference and keep such troublemakers far away from her. Remind them to re-read Job. However, if they are of the Name It and Claim It crowd, that would explain it. Pray for your sister, Tracydolls, and them too. Those ladies are pretty far out there. Lord Almighty, be with this Daughter of Yours in her time of trial and sorrow. Be her joy and her hope. Lift her cares away and give her the strength to endure to the end, whatever that may be. And be with Tracydolls, this other Daughter of Yours, who suffers as her beloved sister suffers. Grant them both peace and grace. In the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.
