I'm looking at beginning HS with my 7th grade dd. I read about Beyond Five in a Row in Cathy Duffy's book. It sounded great, but too young, I'm thinking. I saw on their website that they have Above & Beyond Five in a Row, but I'm not sure she'd be all that interested in the book. Do you know of any other good unit studies that would include some fun fictional books in their plan? I saw the one based on the Chronicles of Narnia, but she didn't really care for the first movie, so I don't think that'd be to appealing to her. I'd love to hear your suggestions/experiences!
TIA!

Does KONOS still exist?

Answer to my own question: Yes! KONOS

They were written around a huge variety of subjects and activities for all ages, if I remember correctly. They were the first big vendor to focus entirely on Unit Studies. And it was written by a certified teacher turned home school mom and her equally intelligent neighbor.

Find an old copy and check it out. It might be just the thing for you.

What is she interested in? You can make a unit study on almost any subject.

The company that did the Narnia study (Cadron Creek) also has a Little House study, but she may be too old for it. They also have one based on Anne of Green Gables.

I nannied for a family that used Konos, and it is good, but it is a TREMENDOUS amont of work...it's kind of funny because the mom told me it was designed to make things easier on the mothers, and to me it looked almost harder.

I used KONOS for years, and I didn't find it to be a huge amount of work. I suspect that depends a lot on mom's personality - to me, keeping track of and grading a boatload of papers would be a huge amount of work. KONOS I enjoyed, so I didn't feel it was a lot of work. There are also a few secrets to making it easier.

I did a unit study on Treasure Island for my 7th grade LA class when I taught in PS. Not only did we cover the book and the literary aspects but we compared real pirates to fictional ones. We discussed what pirate stories were popular and what made them interesting.

Students studied the Golden age of piracy and learned to separate fact from fiction. They researched some of most famous pirates of that day and did reports and poster projects on them. They were facinated by the women pirates. They learned about letters of Marque and privateering vs. pirating.

The students also learned the parts of a ship and about navigation as well. They learned about life at sea and the hardships they faced. They learned of the different parts of the oceans they sailed, countries they represented and much of the trade they profited by including slave trade. They discovered that the real pirate life was very different from Pirates of the Caribbean. In the end we compared Hollywood's version of pirates with the real people. The students loved it! They even had an opportunity to create a pirate identity and their own flag and describe it to the class. We had a lot of fun with it.

All in all we touched on literature, history, geography, sociology, writing through compare/contrast, research, navigational rules and even a few learned to make nautical knots. It also allowed them to be creative. We all had a fun time and in the end watched Muppet Treasure Island as a spoof on the book, kind of a treat.
