Oh yeah, his smelly breathe seems to come from deep down. ...It's very hard to explain, but it just seems like it is not from his actual mouth but down his throat if that even makes sense. I wonder if he has some kind of stomache or lung cancer? It's not like when he opens his mouth that the smell quickly comes out, but mostly when he breathes out of his mouth. There feels like a long hot wind that comes out and the air that finally hits you is foul and rotten smelling like from deep within.

Bacteria, cavities, gum disease possibly. I don't think it's from the stomach (air coming up), although some make it seem that way. The esophagus usually is closed while talking, so I'm not really seeing it...I'd be like a continuous belch for halitosis to happen that way. It could be lung infections (or just from the lungs anyway), or a symptom of disease that's serious. As far as how to address it, that's a toughy. Perhaps someone really close to him to give him a clue?

If a person hasn't had their teeth cleaned in a while and has tartar buildup it will smell pretty bad too.

If he has tonsil issues, that can also make his breath smell.

He's single at the moment, because he's not a full pastor yet and young. I think he is still trying to finish up some divinity classes and then has to do an internship (which part of this experience now may count for) before he is fully able to pastor a church by himself.
It's tough, because no one wants to tell him. I think even more sad is that people might snicker and laught about it and joke about telling him annonymously, but no one has actually done it. I think maybe someone amongst the older crowd would be best for that. We have other leaders that are more experienced and older and would probably come across more professional and mature. But I wonder why they haven't (perhaps they have), because the breathe problem has gone one for quite a while.

Yes, it's a touchy situation. If it were me, I would hope to God that someone would be a true friend and tell me. I personally don't think it's particularly loving to not tell someone they are dragging a piece of toilet paper behind them, or have their skirt tucked in their panty hose either, but that's just me.

Difficult issue. But, allow me to offer some suggestions...
1. Do you happen to notice if he drinks a lot of water? If not, dry mouth may be the problem. Drinking lots of water helps...I know, the more I drink water, the better my breath...
2. If I was near him, I would take out a breath mint called "Zox" and put it in my mouth..and then, offer one to him. That is quite an innocent gesture, but, it would be good to observe the results...if he likes the mint and its results, you can turn him onto a certain line of breath products, the one who makes Zox.
3. One thing people fail to recognize is that everyone has bad breath, the only difference is degrees. But, some products really do help, but, many just mask the problem instead of attacking it.

Just the other day, I was at Borders Bookstore and left the restroom to return to a sofa chair to read and this attractive young woman was giggling and smiling at me. I looked at her and politely smiled and she smiled back. Feeling flattered (yeah, I know, I know...don't lust!....don't be proud of my looks!...don't flirt....got to be careful  ), I had a smile on my face and then scanned the other side of the room and saw a younger female smiling and giggling at me too. ....The two women were friends and they got near each other and whispered and glanced back at me with more smiles.
Thinking they were admiring me  , I was a bit embarassed and stared down to not draw attention to myself. ...THEN,  I saw some weird white thing flying underneath my left side adn realized I had this long wet tissue paper/towel hanging off my of left side underneath my elbow and realized what was going on! After washing up, I must have missed the trashcan when I flung the paper towel paper away and it caught me underneath and trailed me all the way out. .... 
Boyyy was I humbled and embarassed! .....
It would have been nice, though, for the two ladies to nicely tell me I had some long wet paper hang off of me.

I'm going to look up Zox! Thanks for the suggestion. 
As for the water, I suspect he is a bit dehydrated, but I can't be sure. I know from hanging around him socially that he is not a big veggie/fruits guy. Maybe that contributes to things. He tends to eat unhealthy stuff, though I'm not 100% sure about the liquids.
It's not a bad start. Offer him a mint. I'm thinking maybe someone can nicely (though even this can be hard and embarassing for him) slip him a note letting him know about his breathe. ....I can only imagine how painful that must be to have someone tell you that as a pastor/assistant. He is mature enough to handle it, but I'm sure it'll be embarassing!!!

He could have a fungal sinus infection; that would create a bad smell too. (or even an untreated bacterial sinus infection). You said he breathes out of his mouth a lot and that makes me wonder if it is a sinus issue... ?

That happened to my husband a few times. I just thought he wasn't brushing his tongue or using enough scope, but it turned out that his intestines were flipping over and kinking up like a hose and so when that happened, everything he ate, just kind of sat there. And I mean it was a HORRIBLE smell. Then sometimes his intestines would flip back like if he was running or something like that where his body was bouncing around and it would all come out. This went on for over a year before his intestines flipped and didn't flip back. Of course we didn't know this was a problem because he is a guy and they don't go to doctors. But we were smelling rotton food in his belly. Then that started a string of surgeries and hospital stays. It was not pleasant for either of us.

People who have allergies, sinus trouble and nasal drainage often have chronic bad breath. And being single (as your pastor is) could mean you could stay pretty oblivious to the problem. It is really quite sad because bad breath is offensive and keeps people from wanting to spend time with you.
Do you know if he has allergies? Does he use allergy medications?

It does sound to me that he has health problems that is causing bad breath. I say that because I have health problems that causes me to have bad breath.
I have tried everything to make my breath smell better. Nothing works for long.

I had bad breath for a while and i figured out it was from a pill i was taking at night called Alprozolam. when i quit taking it, the bad breath went away. so prescription drug can do it too.
