I originally thought I wanted to become a nurse, but over the past year, I have become less and less interested in the job. For one, I don't think I would like the 12 hr shifts and crazy hours. My fiance, once he gets out of the military will be getting into Law enforcement and since they also have crazy schedules, I wouldn't want to work while he's at home and vice versa..we hardly see each other anyways. Secondly, I don't know if I could make it through the schoolwork, because math and science were not subjects that I did exceptionally well in and I took barely the basics in high school, and even in that didn't do the greatest. However, I excelled in english, reading, social studies etc. I have always loved literature..whether reading a book or discussing it, I love bookstores and libraries, love working with people, teaching, and I love kids. I think I would like to be an elementary school media specialist...aka school librarian. It would require a Bachelors in Teaching and a Masters in Library Science. I'm really nervous, not sure whether I would like it or not. I'm planning to go to a community college and then transfer to a University to get my Bachelors, then I would transfer to another University about 3 hrs away for my Masters and do online courses. I've been praying about it and the more I think about it it's something I think I would really like to do. If anyone on here is a School Media Specialist, Librarian, Teacher, Nurse....please tell me why you like your job, why you chose this field, what you like/dislike, and what kind of pay. I'm eager to know as much as possible about these things.

Some schools have a library aide who doesn't have to have any special education. Maybe you could do that for a year or two and see if you like working in the school and in the library? When I taught in a small school district, there was one librarian (with a degree) over the whole district, but each of the individual schools just had a library aide who ran the library. Most of them only had a high school diploma and maybe an associates or bachelor's degree. The large school district I am in now has a librarian at each campus and then an aide (or 2 or 3 depending on the size of the school). It might also be a job you could do while taking courses toward your undergrad degree. Just a thought...

A lot of doctor's offices have nurses. So you wouldn't automatically be assigned to 12 hour shifts. Or you could be a medical assistant and work regular office hours. It's less responsibilities than a nurse so it doesn't require as much schooling. There are very few jobs for librarians so make sure it is what you want to do before you commit to 2 degrees in the field. You may have to move. All I can say is you have plenty of time while going to community college to decide. Many people change their majors.

She wanted to pick up some extra work, so she took classes in how to operate an EEG machine and contracts with the hospital to do that p/t. -Dan.

Nurses are nurses because they love what they do in spite of the crazy schedules. If the first thing that pops into your head when you think of nursing is how badly you don't want to work a 12 hour shift, then it's not the field for you. Yes, there are 9-5 nursing jobs, but in most cases you need some floor experience first. New grads generally work nights in the hospital.

Nursing is a wonderful life . You have many options to choose talk to a counselor. Nurses can travel the world thur travel nursing, many times you pick the days and time you are open to work, think of all the place a nurse is : school. public health, Dr offices, home health care(VERY flexible) Unless you are in small town your chrice a unlimited all the areas , children ,obyn.genral care, OR, ER, But it not a easy program to get in so for the frist 1-2 yr you are taking all the classes that gernal edu. person must take then you may get accepted in the progam, i know of few that will take a stundent out of HS in to a full nurse program , may a Voc.Tech. As I would think look for a pt job in the area of care you may think you want. a lot of nurse have even when to online call center after school to people, My daughter is s nurse for 5 years and married with two children it a wonderful job, also the pay is great. Double of what Most can be done in 4 year have BSRN Good paid , Then if you want go for a master and teach!

Two things about nursing... (ok maybe more) first - the money is pretty decent. two - in exchange for 12 hour shifts... you only work 3 days a week. The best job I ever had was in a library... but when I asked the Librarian what I had to do to be one...she said. You can get a Masters (6 years at least) in Library Science and be; a head librarian in a small library - at 30K (this was the late 80's) a asst. librarian in a lg library - at 30K or I could be a nurse - go to school for 3 years. (really that is all it took me, but again, late 80's early 90's) and make 36K (slightly more now ) Plus, I wanted to be a nurse, so that helped. And it is still ok, but I am finishing my BS in Psychology... cuz I don't want to be a nurse forever.

I'm accepted into an LIS program (Library and Information Science) right now. quote:
There are very few jobs for librarians so make sure it is what you want to do before you commit to 2 degrees in the field. You may have to move. Two out of three librarians are going to be of retirement age in the next 10 years. In almost any field you may have to move to get the job you want. It's also a good idea to check job placement boards online and ask around if you like a particular school system. Other media specialists can let you know how hiring is going for that field in your state. Both nursing and library science are wonderful careers. Certainly LS is not for you if you dislike technology. Just like nursing is not a good career for people who are squeamish about the body or it's functions. I wish you the best in making your choice.

If I may be so bold... WHY does a librarian need to have a Masters? Forgive my ignorance, but doesn't a librarian order books, figure out where to shelve them, and work with patrons? What does a Masters in Library Science teach?

there is more to it than that. i was thinking of going into Library Science a while back. There is not only library management, ordering books, but most media/librarians need to know technology, databases like Lexus Nexus, ILLIAD and other reference databases, there are childhood development classes in cases such as librarian ships at elementary schools, and classes in urban libraries and rural libraries. a lot of librarians here take or took the online classes at San Jose State San Jose State Good luck with whatever you decide to do. a part of me is jealous, I must admit. I am in the Masters in Communications program and a part of me wishes I had made up my mind and gone into the Librarian program because of the security of the jobs afterward.

I think there are different definitions of a "librarian." To be the lady who sits behind the desk and stamps the due date on your book, you don't need a Masters and that's who most people think of when they think "librarian."

Librarians manage money and people resources, manage and sometimes fix technology, hyper-organization, come up with and implement programs, learn how to keep different materials (paper, books, photographs, etc) safe in storage and on the shelf, keep themselves involved with the literary world, know how to access almost any kind of information (this alone is a difficult undertaking our society is inundated with information), create databases and websites, understand copyright law. The list goes on and on depending on what speciality you choose. Being a librarian is a bit like being a teacher, office manager, IT expert, community program director, historian, and archivist. It tends to draw idealistic, jack-of-all-trades types. "The greatest crisis facing us is not Russia, not the Atom bomb, not corruption in government, not encrouching hunger, not the morals of the young. It is a crisis in the organization and accessibility of human information. We own an enormous "encyclopedia"--which isn't even arranged alphabetically. Our "file cards" are spilled on the floor, nor were they ever in order. The answers we want may be buried somewhere in the heap, but it might take a lifetime to locate two already known facts, place them side by side and derive a third fact, the one we urgently need. Call it the crisis of the Librarian. We need a new "specialist" who is not a specialist, but a synthesist. We need a new science to be a perfect secretary to all other sciences." ~Robert Heinlein ("Where To?" Expanded Universe, 1950) If you think one Master's degree is extreme, Academic Librarians need more than one (2,3, etc) in order to work in a college library.
