I heard that this week that at MTV's Video Music Award that Russell Band mocked the Jonas Brothers for wearing Purity rings and pledging themselves pure until marriage. This even caused Jordan Sparks while presenting an award to defend their view also. See Article
This is not the first time that an MTV host came down on someone, however I was just wondering what you all thought of a band performing at the awards both being mocked and the whole issue if remaining pure in general.

MTV is evil and it must be smote to the ground.
Who is Russell Band?
Remaining pure is probably a good thing for those that can do it. For everyone else, there's repentance...and therapy.

I think that Russel Brand's comments are difficult for people to interpret due to slight culture differences between America and Britain. As a British person I can state that the idea of purity rings and staying pure until marriage is often ridiculed and mocked. Unlike America there is no 'bible-belt' so many ideas of Christianity are left undefended from attacks. I think that the media may have over reacted slightly - he is a comedian and was under a lot of pressure to make it big in America to live up to the MTV awards presenter legacy.
As for bands that performed being joked about, if that didn't happen then the presenter/host would have to either talk about completely random subjects or joke about people that aren't present. Its NOT that big a deal it was meant in good humour.

Never heard of the guy prior to this incident (never have watched MTV, never will), but when I saw the clip of Jordin Sparks taking this guy on the news, I was excited and have some newfound respect for her.
IIRC, he also slammed Gov. Palin, President Bush (don't these guys have a better target than yet another series of jokes about someone who will be out of office in a few months) and turned the thing into a semi-Obama rally.
And to prove the worldview MTV espouses, I saw somewhere they're going to bring this guy back next year.

Russell Brand appeared in some big name movie and he's a well-known comic in Britian. I was thinking when I was watching the awards, "Where did they Get this man from?" But his comments was really offensive (I turned back and forth from the football game in that time slot because we get MTV east coast feed via directv) however, I applaud Jordin Sparks because she took a stand and she was not afraid to speak her mind.
