Hey guys! Not really sure if this is the place to post this, so if it isn't someone tell me, okay!?
I'm looking for a very broad book covering Southern Gospel's roots/history. Obviously no book is going to go into enough detail, but I'm looking for a book that hits the basics...
Any ideas?

There are two books I would highly recommend.
CLOSE HARMONY A history of Southern Gospel by James R Goff Jr.
It was written in 2002. It's the newest, most complete history.
An older, but still very good book is The Music Men, The Story of Professional Gospel Quartet Singing by Bob Terrell. It was written in 1990, so it doesn't have much on the newer groups, but it is a great history lesson.
I have enjoyed these two books immensely, and refer to them often.

The Goff and Terrell books are indeed the two best. Bill Gaither and Jerry Jenkins' Homecoming is also decent.

Then after those books, i'd say you want to get the Cathedrals Book written by George and Glen and Ace Collins, and then the Book called Vestal, by Vestal Goodman, those are both excellent books.
My only wish is that somebody would have written a Kingsmen History book. But now that Fox and Hamill are gone, i doubt it, unless Greg Fox or Ray Reese and they could get info. from some of the Kingsmen old timers that are still with us like Raymond McKinney, Jack Henderson, and Ray Talley, cause we have also lost Frank Cutshall and Calvin Runion.

In addition to his website, which Kerr linked to in an earlier post, I would also like to plug my friend David Bruce Murray's book, Murray's Encyclopedia of Southern Gospel. His book and Close Harmony were the first two that I purchased for SG History. There is a wealth of information in both books.

Jim didn't write an autobiography, but he did do an oral history on cassette maybe 5 or 6 years ago. I have listened to it dozens of times. I loved it. He starts out talking about going to high school with Elvis, goes through all the groups he was with. It is interesting to hear glimpses of American history as he tells about what he was doing when President Kennedy was assasinated. I bought probably a dozen copies over the years to give to people I knew would appreciate it. It's called Jim Hamill 50+ Years of Gospel Music.
I'm sure it would help out Jan if some of us bought more copies.

Of all the bios I have read, the Inspiration's was the most interesting, especially how the group is set up like a business, and there are company rules. I'm not a big fan of the Inspirations, but I really liked the book.

Thanks for the mention. My book has a somewhat unique concept due to the way it's arranged alphabetically by topic. When I started selling it, it was still a work in progress. The book led to SGHistory.com, which is also a never ending work in progress, as you know probably better than anyone else!
