I just got the Thurstons Newsletter and they announced Ray Overholt's passing. He wrote the songs, "He Could Have Called 10,000 Angels" and "Hallelujah Square," among others. Here is what the letter said:

quote:

Good Evening Everyone,

The Thurstons have just returned from the National Quartet Convention in Louisville, KY to receive a call from Rebecca Davis letting us know that her grandfather, Ray Overholt passed away this afternoon around 12:15 pm.

Many of you know that Marni and I traveled with Travis and Rebecca for several years as part of the group Alliance.

I have known the Overholts my entire life. I have never heard Ray speak a discouraging word about anything. He has always been very positive even through losing his sight and just a few years ago loosing part of his leg. He was always eager to sing the good news of the gospel and visit with people.

Ray and Millie have ministered in thousands of churches and have touched the hearts of so many people over the years.

Ray has written many songs over the years with the most known songs probably being none other than “He Could Have Called Ten Thousand Angles” and “Hallelujah Square”.
His songs have been recorded by many regional groups and national groups in Gospel and Country Music alike.
His songs will be remembered for years to come.

Ray and Millie were scheduled to sing in Grand Rapids this afternoon and Millie was helping Ray into the van when he said he felt dizzy. If I understood Rebecca correctly, Ray put his head back on the head rest of the van seat and took a couple of breaths and was gone. Ray will be missed.

Ray and Millie were scheduled to sing with the Thurstons in November at the Kyra Jackson Memorial sing in Battle Creek. We were looking forward to our time with Ray and will miss him not being with us.

The funeral arrangements are not final at this time. As soon as we are notified of the arrangements we will be sure to send an e mail update to let you know the details.

Please keep the Overholt Family and Travis and Rebecca Davis in your prayers in this difficult time of loss.

Sincerely,

Dave Thurston
The Thurstons

Great, Jeff! He definitely is a part of SG History!

What a way to go!! I could only hope to go a similar way! No suffering, just gone, and immediately in the presence of Jesus! That is great!

I emailed Dave Thurston and he gave me the viewing times for Ray:

quote:

If I am remembering correctly it is on Thursday afternoon from 1-4 pm and again from 6-8 pm at the Henry Funeral Home on Capital Avenue in Battle Creek .

The funeral will be in Friday at 11 am.

Dave
