Where did the people in the land of Nod come from? Cain was marked so nobody would kill him. I'm a bit confused on this question.

Cain established a heritage of a godless civilization. "Nod" can be the Hebrew root of the verb "to wander" and is possibly is intended to indicate the lifestyle of Cain and his descendants, the Cainites. One interpretation of Genesis 4:16 is that Cain was cursed to wander the land forever after he slew his brother.

Perhaps I didn't frame my question right. Why was Cain marked so nobody would kill him if there were only Cain, Abel, Adam and Eve in the world?
Gen. 4:14 - Surely you have driven me out this day from the face of the ground; I shall be hidden from your face; I shall be a fugative and a vagabond on the earth, and it will happen that anyone who finds me shall kill me.

Who is Cain speaking of in the bold portion above? Further;

Gen. 4:17 And Cain knew his wife...

Where did his wife come from?

I'm sure these questions have been asked before but as a fairly new christian I am wondering about these apparent inconsistencies.

The creator had already administered justice, so no one had a right to take vengence upon him. Now, everyone would know the story so he needed the mark to remind them that justice had been done. Unfortunately, even with this there was misunderstanding as the story of Lamech shows. He murdered a man and told his wives that his case was comparable to Cain's.

Nowhere does it say that there were only Adam, Eve, Cain, and Abel at that time. Adam and Eve had been fruitful and multiplied. Cain married a sister or niece. The other people in the land of Nod were distant (or not so distant) relations.

That makes sense. I'd forgotten that lifespans were 900 years or so.

Thank you.

Even if all the people of the world were aware of his punishment, Cain was marked so he will feel the punishment himself. This self-guilt was a powerful punishment, and for his entire lifetime Cain was reminded of his guilt.

Where did the people in the land of Nod come from?

The Hebrew word "Nod" means wander, but also comes from the same root word as Banished ("Menude"). Therefore, this land of Nod may have been a safe haven for murderers, as per Numbers 35:15: "These six cities shall be a refuge, both for the children of Israel, and for the stranger, and for the sojourner among them: that every one that killeth any person unawares may flee thither...."

Emphasis mine

I'm not sure the comparison is appropriate, Cain was aware of what he was doing at he time. The killing of Abel was premeditated.

Interesting timing on the discussion. We see that one presidential candidate has 'cain' in his surname.

What's your point? I knew a guy once who's name was Jesus. He bore no resemblence to THE Jesus whatsoever. I think there are more than enough cheap political shots at both candidates in the Election 2008 folder - we don't need them here too.

To the OP, my thoughts are this: There's a lot of stuff in the bible, but it's hardly big enough to hold every detail of civilization... i wouldn't get too hung up on the question. We'll all find out for sure one day

True enough. I think that I think too much at times.

Heb 11:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

I must keep this in mind more.
