For about 1 1/2 to 2 weeks leading up to my "cycle", I have moderate PMS symptoms...the worst of which, for me, is the irritability.

It's so bad for my relationships because I get so irritable and I take it out on everyone in my life! Not to mention that I'm already on 2 medications for bipolar disorder.

What can I do to bring relief to this? I already exercise and eat right at all times, so I need something else.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I'm no doctor, but could the medicines make it worse or hard to treat? I don't know. I know for myself, I just have to be more sensitive to the time of the month... knowing I'm more irritable, so I try to put myself in less situations where it could bring it out, or stay away from certain people who would!

Your diet can effect your hormone levels too. Everyone is different, but I have found that refined sugars and caffeine make a huge difference, not only in my PMS symptoms but also my cramping and such during my period.

Caffeine, succintly put, interferes with your brain's ability to produce the chemicals that help you feel calm.

You may want to increase your magnesium intake. Though no cure, I have experienced dramatic results with taking some vitamin supplements (mostly more B, and magnesium).

Also let everyone around you know (who may be affected) what's going on. Let them know you might need to disappear for a few days, or to just ignore you if you get snappy.

Some people have wonderful help from kava kava, it tends to make me, personally, a bit drowsy instead of soothed.

Take care of yourself. I also eat "right" (nearly raw and vegan, even), but when that call come from my soul, for a pint of Ben & Jerry's, by golly my soul gets it. Spend a day in the tub reading a book. Have a movie-a-thon. Whatever makes you feel better.

Doe magnesium come in other than pill form? I can't take vitamins in pill form because of my interstitial cystitis. I obviously need it, but I know that the best thing is to give up the caffienated tea. I'm too dependent on it to get me through the day. kd

Yes, there's a guy who makes it in a powdered forms, in different flavours...or look up all the foods with a lot of it in them.

http://www.denvernaturopathic.com/news/GABA.html

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/caffeine/NU00600

...caffeine has been shown to increase the body’s production of stress hormones. These hormones, such as cortisol, are responsible for increased heart rate, increased blood pressure, and a sense of “emergency alert”. People who suffer from GERD and heartburn are more sensitive to stress, which can worsen their symptoms. Chronic levels of increased stress hormones have also been shown to contribute to the overgrowth of the stomach bacteria responsible for causing ulcers. Take better control of these conditions by getting off the coffee and stress roller coaster!

Caffeine Interferes With Your Ability to Feel Good
GABA (Gamma-amino butyric acid) is our “feel good” brain messenger that has an important role in mood and stress management. It is also shown to have a calming effect on the GI Tract. Drinking caffeine may interfere with GABA’s ability to perform this calming function. Caffeine also interferes with GABA’s role in stress management, which may worsen symptoms since psychological stress is known to contribute to these conditions. Evidence suggests that anxiety, along with exhaustion resulting from continuous stress, are both associated with aggravating heartburn and esophageal reflux. Don’t let coffee interfere with your natural calming mechanisms. Take steps to improve your stress by quitting the caffeine habit!

I have had great success with Evening Primrose Oil.

I take one capsule a day, every day until about a week before when I up it to two until about the 2nd or 3rd visiting day when I go back to one. When I took it faithfully, my only complaint was I would get 'surprised' by my visit. I'd still get crampy, but not as bad.

I got away from taking it daily this spring and summer and the past two months my stress level at work increased and my moods got to the point that I was considering a mental health issue and went to the dr over it. (Flaming mad one second and crying the next) I wasn't happy with what he suggested and went back to the EPO and was not nearly as bad this past weekend right before I was surprised. (I was a week early this time)

If you can take it - it is an oil, but doesn't taste good.

I need my coffee like you need your tea. Mine is more mental than actual caffine dependency, but getting decaf at work is a problem. I think I have been helped by keeping a bottle of water beside my coffee cup and making myself drink about 8-10 oz before I refill my cup.

It's available in capsule, I'm pretty sure. Any sort of oil, like flaxseed oil or hemp oil, ingest it as a food product, like making a salad dressing with it.

I've wanted to try evening primrose, but the cost has been prohibitive.

What I get is under $5 at walmart. 75 capsules, 1000 mg

(I have a bottle at work and at home because I open this drawer than that cupboard at home. When the bottle at work gets empty, I buy a new one and bring the open one from home and put the new one there. That way they rotate)
