Why do you think a tragic situation can turn one non Christian in the direction of God and another in the opposite?

Where there is free will and freedom of thought, people will see things differently.
Where one Christian will see that God is in control of the tragic situation, and by thanking Him for being in control, He will work things out for the better. Another person will be so overwhelmed by the tragic situation that he will loose his focus on God (assuming he's a believer) and be totally distraught by the situation.
Never, ever, take your focus away from God. See Him in every situation - however bad.
It's worked for me so far.

Sorry Little 1,
I mis-read your post. You said: non-Christian.
I suppose my previous comments still apply. A non-Christian, seeing the tragic situation, may fall off his horse on the way to Damascus and turn to God. Whilst another non-Christian, perhaps hardenned by his personal experience, may say: Aha, I thought there was no God. Now I'm right. How could a God allow such a tragic situation to happen.
It boils down to free will and freedom of thought.
When God invited us to love Him He wanted us to make our decision freely without any coercion on His part. Hence one non-Christian behaving differently from another when faced with a tragic situation.

Generally, probably, the different responses are directly consistent with the HS's leaning(and leading)in either repentance(hence obedience) or the other's continued(and further hardening)disobedience.

When we are cold we seek warmth. When hot we seek cool. When rain we seek shelter.
When hurt we need healing. When sad we long for joy.
These are all reflexive but with tragic situations we seek blame or revenge. We may desire anger over reason.
Those who turn away from God instead of running to Him do not know Him or want to know Him even though He extends His hand. This is far more tragic than any tragedy.

I thought at first that you meant non-Christian tuning to God... and Christian turning away... which I have seen before.
In that case I would have said for the non Christian it is that "need" of a void being filled. And for the Christian it is that expected "need" that wasn't filled.
But I agree that when you build your house... etc, etc.
And... for the Christian... it is maturity.
Also... for new Christians, many are told "Receive Christ and your life will be GREAT!" No-one tells them that the storms will come... and when they do, they are dis-heartened.

only God knows the heart, but this one principle applies to everyone:
you get what you're looking for
bitter people - Christian, or non Christian - perceive things with a special filter.

Thanks everyone who responded to this thread. The reason I asked is because after my dad died, my thoughts turned Godward and eventually I became a Christian; however, my sister's didn't and she remains unconverted today. I was interested in why some non Christians turn to God and other non Christians don't after a crisis or sad situation.

Jesus put it very well;
(Joh 3:19) The light has come into the world, and people who do evil things are judged guilty because they love the dark more than the light.
(Joh 3:20) People who do evil hate the light and won't come to the light, because it clearly shows what they have done.
And some folks just love the darkness to an extent that even tragic situations will not jar them away from it.
