You know doctors back in the sixties seventies, maybe eighties used to hold a baby upide down, and slap it hard on the buttocks, and it would cry. This did not happen with my girls, but I am sure it did when I was born. Why did they do that? Was it not dangerous, a little brutal to hold a slippery new born upside down, and slap it firmly on the bottom. I wonder if they dropped them ever. I do not imagine it was a nice way to greet the world. Is common in other countries? Ok strange, I know, but a random helath question.

This wasn't done to any of my children and my oldest was born in 1977. I'm assuming it was done to force them to cry and take that first breath? I don't know. Interesting question.

I believe holding them upside down was to encourage the fluids to drain out of the lungs and upper airways. But, God already had a way to do that. Going through the birth canal, the baby's chest is compressed, forcing out all the fluid.

The smack on the butt was to encourage them to cry and start breathing. My first was a c-section and he didn't cry right away. The nurses rubbed him to stimulate him, and he was just fine. That would be much like a mother animal licking her newborn. Um, thanks but no thanks, towels will do just fine! Plus, God took care of that, too. The baby's chest is compressed, then when they are born, the chest springs back, forcing air into the lungs.

There are a lot of things that were once done that we'd consider dangerous now unless an emergency. Doctors back then didn't have much of the modern technology that we have today so they made do with what they could. I suspect not so many years back the thought of someone being resucitated via electric shock would appall many.

I suspect that while it doesn't sound a very nice way to greet the world, it's soon forgotten! And let's face it, there are many parents who believe that it's easier to give their children a slap on the behind than it is to give them time out or other non-physical punishment.
