President-Elect Obama has created his short list for staff positions, and it looks like he's looking to reach across the asile for talented people to fill some of them. Some of the names on the list include: Robert Gates, Chuck Hegal and Dick Luger.

Some of the names on the list include: Robert Gates, Chuck Hegal and Dick Luger. There could be a number of reasons why these Republican Congressmen are on Obama's short lst. I probably need to do some research on these people, but I have a sense that these Republicans are already pretty much on the Democratic/Obama side of the aisle politically. As a result, I would say that they their choice is not really reflective of an attempt by Obama to cross the aisle. It's all smoke and mirrors, and attempt to sell us something that really isn't there.

One thing that must be considered before any Republican Senator accepts a cabinet post is who would fill their seat in the Senate. The Democrats are perilously close to a 60-seat supermajority. Lugar and Hagel's states have Republican governors, so at least on a temporary basis they would appoint Republican replacements. Depending on state law, special elections may have to be held to permanently fill the seats. There would have be serious consideration given to whether Democratic candidates could take those seats at this point in time (since the party has a tremendous amount of momentum right now). -Robb

With his appointment of Rahm I doubt he will "reach across the aisle"

Waiting to see who he actually selects. Just because he says they are on his short list does not mean he would really consider them.

I keep saying it: Obama should use the Lincoln model of building one's cabinet (see "Team of Rivals").
