Story below in link. (Can a moderator please make a link because that option STILL isn't functioning for me?)

It's just that it will bankrupt them.

There is also an audio clip of the interview with one of America's most liberal newspapers. They clearly saw the danger in letting this policy of his get out, even if he didn't back in the early days of the year.

What about all of those families who earn their living from working in the coal industry? So much for their tax breaks .....

Yeah, that "Obama-Biden...for Energy Independence" sign is getting more and more ironic.

The coal industry in my state has been messed up for over 20 years. All of the whiners to the north and northeast of us that didn't like the sulfuric acid dropping down from the sky.

Anyway let me re-highlight this:

quote:

So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can.

It's just that it will bankrupt them.

I'm not aware that anyone is building coal anyway and the restrictions on it are pretty heavy without Obama's help.

quote:

American Municipal Power-Ohio wants to put the 1,000-megawatt plant in economically strapped Meigs County in southern Ohio. AMP-Ohio members include 81 cities and villages in Ohio, 27 in Pennsylvania, seven in Michigan, five in Virginia, two in West Virginia and one in Kentucky.

While backers insist the plant will operate more cleanly than any coal-fired plant in Ohio, detractors say it's old technology that will create a generation's worth of nasty pollutants just as the state is poised to write a new, more environmentally conscious energy policy.

First of all, I'd like to hear the whole interview. I have yet to see an obama interview on youtube that wasn't selectively edited.

But assuming this isn't taken out of context: Good. It's about time somebody says what it'll really take to get us off of fossil fuels. Why won't the right be swayed by the fact that it's the best/healthiest/right thing to do?

I've found the interview: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/sfgate/detail?blogid=42&entry_id=23562

I just started listening to it. I wonder what it'll show....

Have you listened to the interview?

He didn't say he would bankrupt the coal industry. He was talking about implementing a cap & trade system that would make it expensive to build coal plants. He also said that if we could figure out a way to use coal cleanly, great. But as it stands, it's pretty dirty and we should get away from it. He also made the same point about nuclear.

So, the audio clip itself isn't taken all that much out of context, but the commentary certainly twists things.

At this point Obama could say he was going to phase out cars and require Americans to walk everwhere, and his supporters would simply cheer louder.

If Obama is elected, anyone who votes for him and then whines about the high cost of oil and the lack of alternatives a year from now should be taken out and beaten severely with rods.

You do realize that over half of the electric plants are coal fired. Who and how do you think that is going to affect besides the coal miners
and related businesses in 27 states? It's going to affect everyone receiving services from those coal fired plants. We are already in a major economic downturn. This lame brain plan isn't going to help.

Yes, I am aware of that. He actually addresses this towards the end of the interview (I've got about 6 minutes left and he just wrapped that up). He admits that's what will happen, but he says it's his job as a leader to convince the American people that the upfront costs will be worth it in the long run, through both a cleaner environment and through developed technology resulting in greater efficiency.

This is something that we're going to have to do at some point. How would you suggest that we get off of coal generation?

-Dan.

Well we could start by building nuclear plants, but Obama doesn't support those either.

In the meantime there is no reason to 'get off of coal'.

Actually, if we had a safe means of storing/disposing of the waste, he would.

Not pollution? Not global warming?

Well apparently everyone in the world believes it's safe except for Obama. Fact is, its just a cover for his position previous to the election, which was to oppose nuclear energy. That wasn't popular, so he made up the 'if it was safe...' red herring.

We should always work to make all fuels cleaner (work that is ongoing) but anyone who subjects American energy policy to the mythology of global warming should be taken about as seriously as someone who wants to utilize UFO technologies to power the world.

It's my understanding that the recycling/reprocessing of nuclear fuel is safer, but doing so would generate plutonium and hamper our ability negotiate with Iran & North Korea and get them to not do the exact same thing.

When the oil jumped to $150/barrel it kind of killed the economy. This type of rhetoric will not help the recovery at all. There needs to be a comprehensive plan for energy independence but not at the expense of pushing the nation into a depression.

Without financial pressure, how do we generate the political will (not just in Washington, but across the country) to actually accomplish this?

Considering we possess a considerable nuclear arsenal, and that we already have nuclear plants which should be recycling their spent fuel, and that many of our allies already recycle nuclear fuel, I am hard pressed to see how this factor should really make a difference.

You don't do it in the midst of a major economic downturn. We need to get on our feet before we start talking about bankrupting a major segment of the economy.

Another group of unemployeed people. Another group of people inferring the costs of higher taxes via the coal co. This is how he will pay for all of the programs he plans in spreading the wealth. On the back of the average Joe Blow citizen, not on the backs of the rich. Oprah does not have to worry about higher taxes nor losing her job. Joe Blow coal miner will provide it.

France gets a majority of its electricity from nuclear plants and finds a way to dispose of the waste.

Sadly, most people will vote for change and all they will get from a Nobama presidency is pocket change.

I have yet to hear or read the words of an apologist for Obama that even has a clue as to how to think in the long term. The meaning of OUTCOMES seems to elude them entirely.

Where is the specific plan on ANYTHING that has been carefully designed by this marvelous Genius?

No group of people has brought us more unintended consequences than have the liberals in congress. And, no one person threatens to do more harm through unintended consequences than Obama. He is CLUELESS on so many fronts that it is chilling!

Might we be reminded, once again, that the reason we have TRUCKS posing as CARS (SUVs) is the idiocy of the CAFE standards that imposed penalties on larger cars and left trucks off the table. That was certainly a brilliant move.

The policies initiated during an Obama/Pelosi/Reid fiasco will haunt us forever! We'll be dealing with unintended consequences for the next century.
