Although it's unlikely, I've been doing some more numbering crunching on the Electoral College Map, and it seems that a tie (269-269) is hardly impossible this year.

Were this to occur, the House would select the president, and the Senate the VP - which opens the possibility of a split-party executive branch (Obama-Palin; McCain-Biden).

However, considering that Dems hold a slight majority in Congress, I'd be hard pressed not seeing them go for Obama.

Anyhow, just food for thought.

this is something to chew on all right...i'm kinda unclear on something: could someone other than the candidates of the parties be selected or does it have to be someone who was actually on the ballot?

No, to my knowledge the candidates on each ballot are the ones that must be voted on by Congress.

In theory, this could mean that Bob Barr or Ralph Nader could be elected president (if they are on all 50 state ballots), but I would hardly count on that happening.

As much as I loathe the idea of Obama being President, the idea of him having Palin as a VP would be just so hilarious to watch!!

I was about 11 months pregnant (felt like it) during the Bush/Gore recounts here in Florida in 2000....felt like groundhog day! I thought that election would never end and I'd be pregnant forever! I do not like the idea of another election that close. I just pray it doesn't come down to Florida!

I doubt it. I think Florida is going with McCain.

Not really. Obama could just ignore her. That's what I would do.

todd_t, you are correct about Florida. McCain is so sure that he has it wrapped up there that he recently pulled almost all of his resources from the state.

Thanks for the electoral predictions, they are interesting to consider.

Don't think we can't still screw something up! We jus had a local primary election go haywire here and there's a congressional seat in Sarasota County still being debated from four years ago because they claimed votes weren't counted...I'm surrounded by idiots.

Well, I don't know if it's a prediction, really - it's more just a game of "What if?"

I have family in Florida. And (no offense), but each time I visit (which I enjoy doing) I'm always glad I can go home to Chicago.

But if any state is going to be pivotal in this election, I think it'll be Colorado - not Ohio.

I'm in Colorado... and it looks like McCain is now about 2 points up, though we will see what this week's new polls show. Rasmussen has McCain up 48 to Obama's 46. The funny thing is that Obama was at 46 in February and is still at 46. McCain was at 39 and has trended up to a current 48.

It is funny because I remember when Colorado's 9 little electorals didn't matter much to presidential campaigns.
