Ladies, is your OB/Gyn male or female? Which do you prefer and why?
Many years ago, for reasons I can't fully explain, I'd not hear of having a woman OBGYN. I've wondered if it was because of my (younger)age, the fact that I was such a tomboy who got along much better with males etc. I can't attribute the fact that I now prefer a woman, to being married neccesarily.......hmmm.....

thoughts? experiences?

I go to a large group practice. There is only one male there. I've seen them all and I like them all. I really have no preference. When I was first seeing them I preferred female, but I've gotten over that.

I don't think I'd care if I saw a little green man from Mars as long as he knew what he was doing and treated me properly.

In my experience, male ob/gyns are gentler.

Males. Every female ob/gyn I've had basically man-handled/traumatized/roughed me (up). No más for the women.

I prefer men OBGYN, but I currently have a female one, she is very helpful and very gentle

depends on the doc more than the doc's sex.
I have personally had much better experiences with midwives instead of OB's. I had a female mw with two of my babies. She was wonderful. I had a good doc who delivered my third. He was a male. And an OB.
What they have in common was not their gender, but instead a true desire to treat ME. And they all treated me as a women capable of thinking for herself and making decisions for her own care. THAT is what makes a good doctor.

Well, I prefer midwives. Who are generally female.

With my first, I was in a large group OB practice, several females and a male. I wasn't pleased with *any* of them, as they were highly interventive, cold, and "I'm the doctor, don't question me" types.

The midwives at our city practice are *very* gentle and understanding. Their backup OB's not so much.

I can't say for myself... I've only had one appointment right before our wedding, it was with a female, and I didn't have a choice at the office I was referred to.

I've had several male gyns and two female gyns. Some of the males were lousy and some were great. One of the females was great, the other one OK.

Frankly there is no one gender that is better at this profession.

In my experience I've had:

1 'cold' female general practitioner (who did my first exam)
1 incredible female OB (I miss her so much)
several adequate but forgettable males in female OBs practice
1 horrendous male OB in her practice

I ended with a very professional, but not over-friendly, male OB. I didn't mind him although I knew several women of my acquaintance who didn't like him either because they perceived him as unfriendly or patriarchal.

He retired 4 years ago and I still haven't found another OB yet. I really should but I don't really want to get used to a new guy all over again.

I have dealt with a couple females- all were bad experiences. One was so rough that I literally could not walk upright for 2-3 days (and this was at a visit to confirm a m/c of all things!) One was just plain weird... the other also rough. All the men I have dealt with (about 6) have been gentle and actually listen to my concerns better... I have not had the pleasure of dealing with a midwife, someday maybe...

I've had mostly bad experiences with female OB/GYN's. My favorite so far was a male, but my new doctor is a female and I totally love her! She was gentle and thorough.

I've never had an obstetrician, obviously , but for the gyn part, I have only had male doctors for those exams...so I can't compare..but I have no complaints..they have all been respectful and gentle..that's for THAT kind of doctor, though..

I have had two male doctors that were pure evil...

one when my wonderful lyme disease specialist/endroconologist retired, and I KNEW I still had syptoms/needed treatment, and was trying to find a new doctor, one I tried treated me like I was a stupid idiot hypochondriac...

and when I broke my ankle, the doctor was mad I didn't have insurance, and he thunked my foot on the table..thankfully, that was NOT the doctor that ended up doing the surgery...

but that's all another story not for this thread...

oh, and everytime I did have an exam "down there" the male doctor always had a nice female nurse right there..I appreciated that accountability they gave themselves.

My first OB was in a practice with two men and a woman. Out of the three, there was only one I didn't like and that was one of the men. He was rough, rude, condescending, and talked to me like I was 13. He was the last Dr. I saw for a regular appointment before my eldest was born. Thankfully he was NOT the Dr. on call when my eldest was born. The woman was on call and I had a wonderful, long, but wonderful experience.

My second OB was one of 4 women in a different practice. LOVED her, but she had another doc in the practice that I couldn't stand. To much of an attitude, with women that had more then one child.

My third OB was in a practice of about 5 dr's and several nurse practitioners. I beleive there were tw women and three men. I typically saw one of the men. He was great, never harsh or rough or anything. He did ask some pretty strange questions sometimes, but all that did was make me roll my eyes. The strange thing is that while I had him as my primary doctor for my last two children, he didn't deliver either of them.

My current family practice doctor is a woman in a husband and wife practice. My boys all see her husband, and my girls see her as I do.

I don't think it matters so much on gender as it does on personality, training and attitude.

Blessings,

Garsy

Yup!

And so do family practice doctors, as long as nothing is wrong.

I knew family doctors did.
I don't see my PCP right now because I'm never sick. My ob/gyn knows me better than anyone has since my pediatrician, so I go to her more often. And since most of my physical ailments are related to my reproductive organs, it makes sense.

My current doctor is a male and I have been going to him for 15 years. I have had both male and female and it has depended on the doctor instead of the sex.

I have one because i had to choose one for the HMO. But I doubt I'll go visit him.

My doctor is male and there is a CNM (certified nurse midwife) in his office. Both are fine, but I prefer the male. Since I don't ever have to have a pap smear again , he said there is no reason to go back there, but I probably will still schedule with the CNM if I need a breast exam. I can't see asking my male family doc to do that, no idea why...

I'm somewhat surprised by the responses. I agree that gender isn't as important as knowledge, gentleness etc. but for some reason I expected more women to say they prefer a woman OBGYN because, either women tend to know women's bodies better or maybe women felt uncomfortable with a male in such a private.......area especially married women.

I do believe that competency trumps gender though and you can find.......* knuckleheads* of any gender .
