My computer worked fine this morning. I listened to a radio station online, posted here, read email, etc, etc... Then I locked it, turned it back on, and it said that I could not connect to a network because the software had not been installed. (!?) So, I thought...maybe if I turn it off and back on, it will work. So, I did....shut down...then turned it back on... So, it starts to come on, and the black screen all of a sudden has a white line across the middle...going from left to right...then the screen slowly fades from black with a white line to gray with a white line...and has all these little speckles on the right bottom of the screen. Very weird! So, I turned it off, and now it will not come back on... Is it gone? Have I lost all my info??

do the f8 and try to go into safe mode. if you can get into safe mode, then it is software related. you can try the last known good, but I don't think that will work. if you can get into safe mode, reboot again, and this time hit f8 and go into safe mode with networking. from there go to google and search trend micro house call. do an online virus search. also go to start, then run then type in eventvwr just like it is typed. check your event logs and see if an errors are there. post back with what you find.

Okay...I went back about an hour later and tried to start it again, and it did fine...
Only problem is that my computer will no longer connect to the internet. I called Circuit City, they said it sounds like I need a new wireless card. :( I am not sure why the problem with the line and the gray happened...could it at all be related to the wireless?
When we send it off to HP to get a new wireless card, I'm going to see if they can do a thorough
"inspection" so to speak and see if there is something else wrong with it...

I doubt there's anything wrong with the wireless card. The display symptom you described would not be caused by a bad wireless card. Most like the two events are related to a Windows crash, a system software issue. You might want to try using Windows system restore to go back to a backup point before you had the display issue. If possible, at least try the wireless card on another computer before spending money on a new one, or at least try reinstalling the software for that wireless card.

Is this a laptop?

Is it less than a year old?

What HP model?

Let's hope it's not the nVidia fiasco currently under way (tick... tick... tick... tick...).

Not all the people at Circuit City are able to troubleshoot computers, and its a liability to troubleshoot over the phone... you really need to take it in person to someone who is knowledgeable

It's most likely a software issue so double check your wireless setup and your firewall.

Do you even get the icon that you use to look for wireless networks?

I just read your previous thread. This problem lines up with the old one. I will check back tomorrow to see if you've answered my questions.

It is a laptop.
It is not less than a year old...but it's less than two...or maybe at two. It was shortly after Vista came out that we bought the computer.
HP model...it's dv9205us, if that helps you.
There is a sticker on it that says "Graphics by nVidia."
????????????
I'm very clueless when it comes to this stuff...
My wireless icon comes up.
I click on it, and it says that there are no networks. The little light that is supposed to turn blue is always orange..and doesn't change no matter which side I switch it to. When I asked the computer to diagnose the problem for no wireless connection, it said,
"This computer does not have a wireless network adapter installed and configured."
When I told the guy at Circuit City that, he asked me what model, and he said that people are having trouble with the wireless cards in all 1900 models...and that HP would replace it for free. ????

Ok that is more info. It sounds like the wireless switch is defective if its not switching on and off correctly and that there is some kind of recall by HP.. or the switch they installed on the laptops doesn't work with vista and the new one will

The information you provided was just what I needed.

You probably have the nVidia overheating problem that's been going around like the black plague but which the system manufacturers have been trying to dress in camouflage and keep under the radar. I expect HP will replace the bad hardware on the motherboard, or swap out the motherboard altogether, then update the BIOS to keep the fan running all the time so the nVidia graphics chip doesn't overheat again.

The nVidia 6150 in your laptop has, to my knowledge, not yet been identified as a culprit along with those nVidia models that have been, but we're only at the beginning stages of this mess. I get the sense the floodgates are about to open within the next 2-4 weeks. I believe nVidia has set aside something like $190M to address these (ahem...) "issues."

BTW, here's the HP alert:

Thanks so much.
I read it.
It's exactly what the problem has been...
Wow.
I guess I need to try to save whatever I can before sending it in to them, huh?
Is there any way to save my bookmarks since I can't go online?

Yes. But more than that -- get rid of everything you've written to the disk, i.e. all files you've created. Store it offline somewhere (burn a DVD, or write it to an external hard drive, or use one of the free online backup services). I personally use DVDs and I burn two of them and I verify them before I wipe the files off the disk they came from. I trust no one.

> Is there any way to save my bookmarks since I can't go online?

Yes. All browsers I know of have an easy way to do this. In Firefox, it's Bookmarks/"Organize Bookmarks"/"Import and Backup"/Backup. In Internet Explorer, it's File/"Import and Export"/"Export Favorites" etc. etc. Obviously, do this BEFORE you save your files off the hard drive.

The first part should be easy enough. I don't think there is anything there that I created. I will check for sure...but most of the stuff I have are things that I downloaded.

I laughed at your last sentence...never use "obviously" with me when it's about computer related stuff. I really know very little. I took one college class back in the late 90s..96-99...and the only lab our teacher could get for us just happened to be all Mac's....and I don't have a Mac.

If you didn't create any documents, or spreadsheets, or presentations, or videos...

If you didn't download any music or videos...

If you didn't save any emails locally with something like Thunderbird or Outlook...

If you didn't download any pics from a digital camera or a digital video camera...

Then you probably don't have anything on your laptop you need to save.

If "the things you downloaded" are important to you (I couldn't tell from how you phrased it), then you should save them somewhere, in case the friendly repair people accidentally delete your stuff.

I said "obviously" in that case because backing up your hard drive, then deleting your files from it, and THEN saving your bookmarks to the hard drive that you just wiped your files from would be rather, um.....

Right?
