It's a given that the largest prize CA always goes to the Dems. That's why Reps hate us so! So that makes 72 electoral votes and counting.

Gee you think all those out of work auto workers are a little angry at the economic mess this administration has got us into?

To re-quote an ex-Prez "It's the economy stupid!" Like father, like son!

Michigan is in the state it is in because the state elected Democrats to run things who upped the taxes and resulting in a one state recession. It is the perfect picture of our future with Democratic leadership in both the Executive and Legislative branches, which is what we will get should Obama win the race.

I didn't realize that Michigan controlled the national economy. That right, people only buy cars in Michigan! My friend who has a car dealership here has it in the wrong state! That's why her business is down!

I, for one, can hardly wait to see Obama part the waters of the Great Lakes and watch the stream of manufacturing companies come streaming back in into the waiting arms of the UAW and AFL/CIO. It'll be magical.

You missed the point completely ... they have been taxing their smalls businesses and increased the state tax which was suppose to create jobs and a surplus in their budget and it did just the opposite. It is an example of what can occur on a larger scale (the entire USA) with both the Executive branch and the Legislative branch agreeing to put forth the Democratic economic agenda. It doesn't work.

Yet according to a link posted in another thread the problem in the House could very well be fiscally responsible dems who don't want the law to pass it. The Senate also added lots of pork to satisfy the Republicans who voted it down last time.

Actually, I understand that McCain will keep some radio ads going in Michigan, but his TV ad revenues are going elsewhere.

Louisiana was destroyed by Katrina, Michigan by Jennifer. She's the D Gov who told the state years ago that she was going to blow us away by her economic program. She is the uncontested champion of joblessness among the nation's governor's.

Kwamee Kilpatrick (D) was the mayor of Detroit until a few weeks ago. He was forced out of office and will join fellow Democrats in prison soon. Perjury, abuse of power, and a sex scandal. He fired police officers because they told the truth about him and the settlement cost the city I think $9 million. Naturally, he was a Barak Obama delegate to the convention, but was unable to attend because of his electronic tether.

80% of children in Detroit's public schools drop out. The other 20% get a rotten education. Democrats insist that they remain in these schools. Barak Obama sends his kids to a private school where the tuition is $11,000+ for nursery school. His kids matter, these kids don't.

Louisiana was not destroyed by Katrina. New Orleans was destroyed by generations of corrupt Democratic politicians and policies. Katrina was just the catalyst to expose what was already rotten and dead. The rest of the state is fairly libertarian and conservative. New Orleans has always been a drag on things.

...of course miscalculation by the US automakers (energy prices), exploding health care costs and now a tightening credit market would not have anything to do with Michigan's current economic crisis would it?

Just factors piling on to an already bad situation caused by the poor policies of the incumbent Democrats as described in a post above.

Michigan's longtime economic woes are the same as those in Gary, Indiana:

When you have a population that is dependent on a single industry (in Gary's case, steel mills), and that industry leaves town or faces stiff overseas competition, it leads to an economic collapse.

Gary used to be a nice place to live, with lots of good-paying jobs. When the steel mills closed, however, it rotted from the inside. Today, it's a crime-infested nightmare.

So true!

Believe it or not Houston was hit pretty hard in the 80s because of the drop in domestic oil production and exploration. It was pretty much a one industry town then but now it is more integrated with other industries.

Michigan is desperately trying to bring in high-tech industries with tax breaks, but it's slow going.

Otherwise, places like Ann Arbor are doing well, but the downside is that property values are sky-high, or at least they were last time I visited in 2003.

If there is a recession there... and high unemployment... how can the property values be so high?

I recall in the 80s, property values sunk to all time lows in Houston.

Ann Arbor is a very affluent, thriving town where the university hospital is based, as well as a few drug research outfits.

It's the exception to Michigan's state economy rather than the rule.

Dubya, don't be suckered by todd's left-handed curve balls.

States with liberal Democrat Governors and cities with liberal Democrat mayors who bring in their liberal Democrat economic plans almost always have economic woes because liberal economics don't work!!!!

Ahhhhh....how about we will give the liberals another chance. Surely the conservative plan didn't work.

Hmmm, lets see.... Government mandate on emission standards... Government mandates on safety standards... Government mandates on how to build cars.... Perhaps some republicans voted for these mandates, but how many of them proposed the mandates? Health care costs? It seems the democrats, in order to insure fairness, have mandated other things on the insurance industry causing them to pass the cost to the consumer. And, fuel standards.... This ethanol thing. It seems that everyone realizes it's been a disaster. Why don't any of the legislatures initiate a bill to repeal ethanol requirements they've imposed.

Could it be that Al Gore and the environmentalists have some economic gain from all the legislation that's been passed in the name of tackling climate change?

I am going to have to agree with Todd. As much as I don't want to admit it, MI's woes can trace their roots back to the end of the Engler (R) administration. Republicans, iirc, controlled the legislature. They also controlled it for some of Jenny's tenure. I am not a huge fan of Granholm, but I consider her pretty moderate on most issues.

MI's economy was so dependent on the auto industry and other manufacturing jobs. When these went to other countries or otherwise did poorly, it only stands to reason that MI would be hurt.
