At age 72, some are concerned that John McCain may not be able to serve out two full terms as president due to health issues including McCain's history of cancer, and having taken a serious beating for five years as a Vietnam POW.

Were McCain to be elected this year, he would be 76 at the end of his first term.

So here is the question: which do you see as more likely, a one-term McCain presidency or a two-term one?

Considering he could:

A) die
B) become incapacitated
C) decline reelection
D) lose in his bid for reelection

And that A,B and C are more likely for someone of his age (and an argument could be made for D as well) I voted one term.

So is this for funzies or are you making a greater point?

If his health holds or if he does not get to laughing too much at Daily Kos and choke; it will be two terms.

Thanks
RC

If he were to do what's really needed....

- increase the size of our military to raise it's readiness level

- actually PAY for the ongoing wars (imo a 50 cent per gallon tax should do it)

- cut social security, medicare and other entitlement programs

- eliminate pork spending...including the pork sent to the great state of Alaska

- eliminate all tax credits and subsidies to oil companies

- balance the budget

...then he will definitely be a one term President.

If on the other hand he lies to the public about the cost of war, our national debt, entitlement programs.....and refuses to wield the veto pen...he might be a two term President.

i say one term because i think he will choose not to run for a second term which may result in America having her first female president because i believe the repubs will decide to nominate Palin

And I'd be OK with that!

But his health is really a silly argument. He's had a few cases of skin cancer. He would be getting the world's best screenings for the next four years (probably already is). Skin cancer is not going to kill this man.

"Sen. McCain enjoys excellent health and displays extraordinary energy, and, while it is impossible to predict any person's future health, I and my colleagues can find no medical reason or problem that would preclude Sen. McCain from fulfilling all of the duties or obligations of the president of the United States," said Dr. John D. Eckstein, an internist who has been overseeing McCain's treatment for 16 years at the famed research center's campus in Scottsdale, Arizona.

McCain has had four malignant melanomas removed. Three of them -- on his left shoulder, left arm and left nasal wall -- were limited to the top skin layer and were not invasive. They were removed in 1993, 2000 and 2002, and all were declared Stage 0, of little long-term concern.

But a fourth melanoma proved to be invasive and was removed from his left lower temple in 2000, Eckstein said.

The surgery on McCain's temple was carried out in August 2000 by Dr. Michael Hinni, who described the melanoma as 2.2 mm thick at the thickest point and 2 cm across.

Hinni said that, in order to leave a 2 cm margin that would minimize the risk of leaving some of the cancer intact, he had to remove a patch of skin roughly 6 cm in diameter, as well as an underlying carotid salivary gland from McCain's face.

Dissection of dozens of lymph nodes showed no evidence that the cancer had spread, he said.

One in 58 Americans will develop malignant melanoma in their lifetime, said Dr. Suzanne Connolly, McCain's dermatologist. This year, an estimated 116,500 cases will be diagnosed in the United States, with more than 62,000 of them invasive, she said.

McCain has many of the risk factors associated with the cancer: light skin, light-colored eyes and a history of excessive sun exposure, she said.

Though there is no sign of recurrence, McCain monitors his skin carefully, is examined by his dermatologist every three to four months and "practices good habits of sun safety," she said.

I'm just curious, is all, as to what folks are thinking out there.

I voted one term so Palin could take the second term.

I voted for one term, for two reasons:

1) I think McCain will have his fill of the job after 4 years. He is definitely vigorous at his age now, but it is fairly evident how much the Presidency ages a man.

2) I think the Republican Party will pressure him to step out of the way for either VP Palin or another up-and-coming fresh conservative.

A lot can happen in 4 years, but these are my opinions based upon the present. I didn't include the possibility of McCain dying simply because that is a very far-fetched possibility. He has a history of skin cancer, but is otherwise in great health, and skin cancer is easily treatable when caught early.

I too was thinking he would serve one term and Palin would carry the torch from there. Honestly, before Palin I didn't think that McCain had a chance to win against Obama but now he has a fighting chance.

I agree.

If McCain wins, and current polling in a few key Senate races holds, the Dems will pick up a minimum of four new seats there, plus many more in the House - setting the stage for a contentious relationship with a McCain executive branch.
