Because early manuscripts did not include this passage. Luke 19:10 says much the same though.

Peace

Was it "dropped" from the NIV or "added" to the other versions?

Exactly. : )
The NIV is a fairly new version, which means it has had access to manuscripts that some of the older versions did not have access to. Chances are, if the manuscripts we have available today were available back when the older versions were made, Matthew 18:11 wouldn't have been included period.

this link might help you understand... I am sure there many other better links, but this one should answer your question.

If one holds the textus receptus to be the superior Greek text, then sure it'll help. But most serious Greek scholars I've spoken with do not.

I agree... I use the NASB
but I think that link would answer her question about why verses are left out.

That's a good one. I'm an ESV man myself, but NASB is definitely strong.

I'm just worried that it's KJVO slant might taint its arguments. It does present information, but from what seems like possibly a biased point of view.

Q: What verses does the NIV (and most new versions) omit?

A: Mat. 17:21; 18:11; 23:14; Mark 7:16; 9:44, 46; 11:26; 15:28; Luke
17:36; 23:17; John 5:4; Acts 8:37; 24:7; 28:29; and Romans 16:24, just
like the Jehovah Witness New World Translation and the Catholic
bible.

(Readers should read The NIV: The Making of a Contemporary Translation, 1986 THEMSELVES if they want to be Bereans. It is available from Zondervan Publishing House, 1415 Lake Dr. S.E., Grand Rapids, Michigan 49506 (ISBN: 0-310-24181-2).)

quote:

I use the NASB.

“I must under God renounce every attachment to the New American Standard Version . . . I’m afraid I’m in trouble with the Lord... We laid the ground work; I wrote the format; I helped interview some of the translators; I sat with the translators; I wrote the preface... I’m in trouble; I can’t refute these arguments; it’s wrong; it’s terribly wrong; it’s frighteningly wrong; and what am I going to do about it? . . .[Y]ou can say the Authorized Version [KJV] is absolutely correct.” — Dr. S. Franklin Logsdon, author, NASB preface
