I have been unemployed for quite some time now. Regrettably I have accepted the reality that I may have to take a few steps back career wise and financially. As a result of this I have “dumbed” down my resume and applied for lower level jobs. This strategy has worked resulting in several job interviews.
Here is where things get complicated. During several of these interviews I have been asked questions, which if answered honestly, would most likely preclude me from employment. They will tell me I seem over qualified, ask me if I am simply looking for “anything” right now, if I plan to bolt for a better job when possible, etc. The truth of the matter is that I am often over qualified, am simply looking for any job right now, and would most likely leave for a better opportunity.
So, how does one respond to these types of questions? Up to now I have refused to lie outright and have sort of danced around the issues. However, this feels almost like lying to me and I suspect most folks see right through my answers.
So, is it ever OK to lie? Is it expected in certain situations and basically accepted?

Answer their questions honestly and when they discover you're 'over qualified' you have a decision to make whether to assure them you'll not bolt for a better position outside their organization for acceptable period. Companies aren't anxious to train and enroll new employees just to bail out for a better position.

I have heard people say that it is OK to tell "white lies" or lie in order to protect someone. There is much room for this debate. I believe a lie is a lie, just like sin is a sin.

Tell the truth and then convince them that you are willing to grow with the position and do what you can to help grow the company. If the company grows, then you can grow. Employers eat this up.
I'm in the interview process now - it is a tough position. I don't want to hire someone who is using my position as stepping stone. I can see that they are "too smart" or "too motivated" to stay in my entry-level position and they'd take it until that "dream job" cmoes along. I can't afford to keep training these people and then losing them. On the other hand, there are a lot of people in the job market right now and many will take a lower-paying, entry level job and stay there if there is room to grow.

Maybe you could pre-answer some of those uncomfortable questions on a cover-letter attached to your resume before hand. Our kids were taught to do this. It's a good way to introduce yourself, and answer some questions concerning your qualifications before they are brought up in an interview.

I concur.
Recently in an interview (for a part-time job, the joys of being young and all that), I was asked what my "greatest weakness" was, and I gave an honest answer that I knew might hurt my chances. While it certainly wasn't the smart thing to do from a financial or worldly perspective, I felt that I could not give any other answer without compromising my morals.
