Joey, I think that would be Gaither Vocal Band with Guy Penrod.

That's who I was thinking about too...of course I think the Oak Ridge Boys did it and several other groups.

The GVB and the Oak Ridge Boys both did record it. The title if I am not mistaken is The Baptism of Jesse Taylor. It was written by Johnnie Russell.

ETA LINK to the LYRICS.

I remember the song from back in the early to mid '70's. It was about the last radio play song from the Oak Ridge before they left Gospel music. The next song that I remember that they released to radio was "The Late Night Benediction at the Ya'll Come Back Saloon."

I am looking into getting a copy of this. I think the one played on radio is maybe GVB.

I really have to say I wasn't much of a fan of GVB but more I listen to the music they put out, more I am impressed with them

Check I Tunes when you need a song. I've bought a lot of SG music from them its only 99cents a song plus tax. Its a lot better than buying a whole cd for just one song.

If you want to maintain ownership of your digital downloads indefinitely, I recommend converting it to mp3 format...or buy it from a company (Amazon/Walmart/eMusic/Etc.) that will sell you the song already in mp3 format.

If this is a topic that interests anyone, I've written quite a bit more here: http://www.musicscribe.com/blog/wordpress/?p=1101

The only song i don't care for that the GVB does is that "between Jesus and John Wayne " song. I don't know why, i just can't get myself to like that song.

It's far and away my favorite song on that CD. I loved the title before I ever heard it.

like I posted earlier. I wish more songs were like this one. written about stumbling and getting back on feet to continue. I don't care for all the happy go lucky songs because if my life was 100% happy and easy, my walk with God will become weak and I will walk away from God. I pray for the Valleys so I can climb out with God's help.

which is what that song says to me.

not to mention as DB said, I loved the title. John Wayne being greatest actor ever and Jesus being my best friend. well title had me hooked

Joey, you would really like Rodney Griffin's song, "Without a Valley" (sung by Florida Boys and Greater Vision, and maybe others...). My favorite words are ..
"without a valley, how would I ever know, that His strong and gentle hands will never let me go......."
