Are you thinking of voting for McCain because he is the lesser of two evils?

Do you think you need to vote for McCain to try and keep Obama from winning?

If so, then you are thinking what I used to think and what many others are currently thinking. I am hearing more and more of these types of statements, especially as the election gets closer and closer.

However, I believe these are wrong considerations with devastating impacts.

If you do not believe that McCain or Obama is the best candidate for representing your values then DO NOT vote for them!

We must not vote out of fear. Me must not settle for the lesser of two evils. We must not loose our democracy.

  • Fear - The idea that we need to vote for McCain to keep Obama from winning (or vice-versa) is most likely a statement based on fear. Ultimately, God is Soveriegn and we need to do what He calls us to do and trust in Him for the outcome (Isaiah 43:1-7). We have a responsibility (2 Chronicles 7:14) but God has the authority (I Chronicles 29:11,12).

  • Lesser of two evils - This should not be our reasoning. Where else in our lives do we allow this concept to govern our actions? Is this type of thinking inline with the mind and will of God? Furthermore, there are more than only two options...

  • Democracy - We have allowed the Republican and Democractic parties to have control over our opinions by believing they are the major parties that the President will come from, when WE decide which party the President comes from. Just because this has often been the case does not mean it HAS to be this way, and if everyone who feels that way would change their vote, we would send a clear message to these parties. We loose a huge portion of our democracy if we vote for one of these "so-called" major party candidates based on the premise that one of them are going to win anyway. We the people have a voice. We get to say whom we want in our government through the election process. If we vote for a candidate because we think we have to or that is the only "choice" we have, then we are not acting as responsible U.S. citizens with our priviledge and freedom to accurately voice our opinion.

Besides the Republican and Democractic parties, there are Presidential candidates from the Constitution, Green, Independent and Libertarian parties. I encourage you to research all the candidates and vote for the one that you believe is the best person for the office.

A couple other thoughts:

  • Would we want our children to do "the lesser of two evils" in a situation?

  • If we vote for the lesser of two evils, how can we be upset when our leaders no longer stand for what our founding fathers stood for?

  • A vote for the vice-president is still a vote for the president. The president will still be the leader of the country. Let us not fool ourselves into thinking our vote is only for the vice president.

The time to not be fearful and vote our conscience is during the primaries. No matter what level of office it is. That is also the time to push a "third" party if that is your leaning. During the primary is when those who end up representing their party should look at the results and know what way "the wind blows." And if they indeed do not abide by the "will of the people" in what way the "people" leaned in the primary then the next time round they should find themselves out on their kisters.

BUT, the process takes time and diligence. time in that it may be four more years before changing of the guard can happen and diligence in making sure you and those you influence are watching your representatives and making sure they hear from you throughout the year, even going so far as to make sure they know what it is your face looks like because you are at their local office as often as possible.

That kind of change takes time. To not vote for the "lessor of two evils" as in this case of the current presidential election is foolishness in my opinion. No way do I want a super majority of liberal Democrats in both houses along with a president who is sounding more and more like a disciple of Marx and Lenin. Nor am I extremely confident in what McCain brings to the table either. But I do see McCain as somewhat of a counter balance to the Pelosi/Reid regime we are going to have. So yes, I now am voting for the lessor of two evils.

Well put, Ben.

One would almost have to be very young or have had most things in life come easy to have never needed to choose between two unattractive options. Sometimes a third option is impractical and becomes the worst solution.
