The purpose of this blog is to share information about Greater Vision, my favorite Southern Gospel Music Group. My sister introduced me to Greater Vision’s music in the Fall of 2004 and she took me to my first Greater Vision concert in Jan. 2005. Since that time, Greater Vision has blessed me greatly. And, you know how it is…. When you find something that is very special to you, you want to tell everyone about it!

This blog will not be a review of the Greater Vision concerts that I attend. Those will be posted in the Southern Gospel threads. What will be included will be information about the group and the individuals that make up Greater Vision. I’ll also try to include information about special events, awards, birthdays, and other things you might be interested in.

I hope you will enjoy reading my blog. If you’d like to comment on the information provided or if you have questions or suggestions, please PM me. I’d love to hear from you.

If you’d like to receive Greater Vision’s free e-newsletters, you can sign up here.

A Brief Greater Vision Introduction

Gerald Wolfe formed Greater Vision, a Southern Gospel Trio, in December 1990. Through the years, Greater Vision has earned the admiration and loyalty of fans throughout the United States and many foreign countries. Greater Vision has received many awards including Favorite Trio, Favorite Song of the Year, and Favorite Album of the Year.

Greater Vision honors the Southern Gospel tradition with tight harmony and blend on “convention” songs, hymns and songs written by many songwriters. A majority of Greater Vision’s music is written by prolific songwriter (and current Greater Vision baritone) Rodney Griffin.

Based in Morristown, TN, Greater Vision travels and performs at about 200 concerts every year. Greater Vision has been featured on numerous video tapings of the Bill Gaither & Friends Homecoming Video Series. They also appear regularly on In Touch, with Dr. Charles Stanley. Viewers across America have seen Greater Vision on television via TNN, TBN, BET, the Family Channel, INSP (the Inspirational Network), GMT (Gospel Music Television), The Odyssey Network, and many other local, cable, and satellite channels.

Keepin' an Eye on the schedule for this weekend.....

Friday, Sept. 26th
If you happen to be around the Tallahassee, FL area, you can see Greater Vision in concert at the Lighthouse Children's Home (Telephone number 850-877-3778) at 7:30pm. Tickets are only $10 and proceeds over and beyond expenses will go to the Children's Home. (WOW!) A mixed Trio from Valdosta, GA, VictorySong, will also be participating in the concert.

Sunday, Sept 28th
Greater Vision will be at Dr. David Jeremiah's Church, Shadow Mountain Community Church in El Cahon, CA (in the San Diego area). GV will be singing at the 9am and 10:45am worship services (live streaming available here - remember, that's Pacific Time) and will be in concert during the evening service at 6pm. The church archives its evening services, so when a link is available for the "streaming archive" I'll post it here (it looks like it normally takes 2-3 weeks to get posted at the Church site).

If you can't make it to a live performance this weekend, maybe you can see one on the Internet! Please pray for the guys' safety as they travel. And pray that all those in attendance will be greatly blessed!

Gerald's first "professional" job in Southern Gospel was with the Dumpling Valley Boys. He sang with them for several years before joining the Cathedral Quartet as pianist. While with the Cathedrals, 1986 through 1988, he also sang with the group and one of his most popular songs was Champion of Love.

Following the Cathedral years, Gerald had a solo ministry for two years. During that time, he recorded two projects, Gerald Wolfe - Self Titled (1988) and Hold Forth The Light (1989).

In December 1990, Gerald founded Greater Vision with Baritone Mark Trammell and Tenor Chris Allman. Gerald has been the Lead and Emcee with the group since its forming.

Some of Gerald's most popular songs have included:

Land of Living (first recorded with Dumpling Valley Boys, but shown here with The Cathedrals)

O Holy Night

'Til the Storm Passes By

Gerald has received many Industry awards, including Favorite Male Singer of the Year in 2001-2005, 2008; Favorite Lead Singer of the Year in 2002 and 2006; and Favorite Young Artist in 1988.

Gerald was nominated for a Male Vocalist of the Year Dove Award in Spring 2008. See related article here. (A video can been seen by clicking on the video icon and then searching for "Dove Award nomination." Sorry I couldn't give a link for this.)

Other projects

My Kind Of Christmas (2002) - instrumental
Keys to Quiet Places (2007) - instrumental
Until Now (2008) - Gerald's most requested songs of the last quarter of a century!

Birthday: Dec. 16, 1966

Wife's Name: Regina
Children: Reagan & Riley
Joined Greater Vision: December 1993

Favorites:
Scripture: Psalm 27:4

Prior to joining Greater Vision, Rodney sang with The Dixie Melody Boys. He joined Greater Vision in 1993 as Baritone and has been there ever since. Hear Rodney talk about his songwriting and about Greater Vision here.

Although Rodney has received many awards for his singing (Singing News Favorite Baritone of the Year 2002, 2003, 2006-2008), he is perhaps most well-known for his song writing. According to BMI (a performing right company who licenses songs for performance) Rodney has individually and with other songwriters penned almost 300 songs! (I won't list them all, but if you'd like to see the list, click here.)

Some of the song writers that he has written with include Phil Cross, Twila LaBar, Steve Mauldin, Chris Binion, John Randall Hunley, Joel Edward Lindsey, Todd Forman, Wayne Haun, Jim Brady, Tim Lovelace, Kirk Talley, Jonathan Wilburn, Yvonne Wingert, Kyla Rowland, Jerry Goff, Barbara Huffman, Steven Randolph Hurte, Mike Speck, Jeff Ferguson, Roger Bennett, Doug Riley, Scott Inman, Debra Talley, Gerald Crabb, John Starnes, Earl Galloway and Tim Greene. Wow!!!

The following songs have received the BMI Award Winning Song designation: Do You Want to Be Forgiven, Don't Let the Sandals Fool Ya, He Is To Me, I Believe, Just Ask, Paid In Full Through Jesus Amen and Pile of Crowns.

Greater Vision records and performs many of Rodney's songs, but other groups sing his songs as well. Some of the groups that have sung his songs are The Kingdom Heirs, Perrys, Dixie Melody Boys, Freemans, Dixie Echoes, Kingsmen, Triumphant Quartet, Hoppers, Greenes, Booth Brothers, Brian Free & Assurance, Ernie Haase & Signature Sound, Down East Boys, Hayes Family, Gold City, Isaacs, Legacy Five, Pfeifers, Ivan Parker, McKameys, Whisnants, The Specks, Lauren Talley as well as local artists in the United States and Canada.

Songs that have received Singing News Song of the Year are 1999 - My Name is Lazarus; 2000 - Just One More Soul; 2004 - Just Ask; 2005 - Faces.

Rodney has been chosen by fans to be their Favorite Songwriter of the Year for every year since 1999! Wow---that's ten years in a row! When I asked Rodney how he felt about that, he said, "I am truly humbled and grateful for this. I realize "favorite" doesn't mean "best". I know I'm not the most talented songwriter out there. I just so happen to be blessed with a wonderful platform on which to share my songs with the listener." He continued, "To think that I have won this award for ten years...well...I really can't believe it. I never would have thought that that was possible. I'm blessed."

Rodney continues to bless me with his songs. Some of my favorites are:

My Name is Lazarus

It Means Just What It Says

It Pays to Pray

God Will Pass By (scroll down and start the video)

Jacob Silas Kitson

Birthday: Nov. 18, 1983
Birthplace: Yuma, AZ
Joined Greater Vision: June 2008
Marital Status: Single

Favorites:
Scripture: Isaiah 6:8
Color: Vivid Green
Food: Bogogi (Korean Beef Dish)
Singer: Christian - TaRanda Green
Secular - Frank Sinatra or Karen Carpenter
Musician - David Davidson (Violin)

Place to be when not on the road: The country, a lake, my church, or going to a ball game!

Dislikes:

Jacob is the new Tenor with Greater Vision and he is the youngest member of the Group. He is one of twelve children (wow---guess he won't be complaining about "tight quarters" on the bus!!) and as the child of a military family, he has had the opportunity to live in many places.

Prior to joining Greater Vision, Jacob sang with his family, The Kitsons. He was also a founding member of Tribute Quartet with whom he sang Tenor.

I'm very glad to have Jacob with the group and look forward to making a lot of memories with him. In the meantime, take a look at this collage of one of his first appearances with Greater Vision

and

this clip from his first Main Stage appearance with Greater Vision at the 2008 National Quartet Convention.

I am very proud that Gerald Wolfe has sent out the following message to people who have signed up for Greater Vision's e-newsletter. Now is NOT the time for all of us to be "politically correct" and just sit back and let the chips fall where they may! Here's what he had to say....

quote:

A Personal Message

October 6, 2008

I realize by sitting down to write this message that I will be alienating some people who believe those of us in public life should always remain silent, when politics are involved. However, the stakes for our nation, our fellow citizens, and more importantly, our children, are simply too high for anyone of conscience and conviction to remain silent.

Let me begin by relating that just one week ago, I heard a well-respected Pastor give a statistic that simply startled me as a Christian. The statistic was that "fifty percent of Evangelical Christians are not registered to vote in the upcoming Presidential Election." As someone who takes the responsibility to vote very seriously, I was really dumbfounded by the statement. I could not believe that people who "believe" we have the responsibility to positively effect change on the world through the hope we have in Christ, would not see voting as one of the most simple ways to make our voices heard and our influence felt on a national level. That statistic is what prompted me to seriously think about writing this letter to you.

Please allow me to get right to the point... in several states, today is the LAST day to register to vote in the upcoming Presidential Election. As this week goes by, the deadline will come in other states as well. If you are eighteen or older and are not registered to vote...DO IT TODAY! There is no reason or excuse to fail in your responsibility as an American citizen and as a Christian to exercise this fundamental freedom and responsibility. If you can't physically "go" somewhere to register, call a friend, or your church, and ask someone to bring you the necessary paperwork for you to register. It's quick and simple, and it is your responsibility and duty.

If you have already registered, prepare yourself to vote responsibly by learning about each of the candidates, and compare their stated policies and positions, and their voting records, to your beliefs and convictions. While it's true that this election will more than likely hinge on the economy, as Christians, we have values and beliefs that go deeper, and are more important, than our wallets.

Our first question should be...what are the candidates positions on the value of human life? Many people who would call themselves Christians would say this is a "non-issue" in this election, since the President can't force their views on this issue on anyone. If you're one of those people, let me respectively tell you that you are sadly mistaken. Our next President will be replacing at least two, and maybe three Supreme Court Justices during his term in office. If you keep up with politics at all, you know the Supreme Court is the most powerful entity in the government, as they "interpret" the laws passed by the Congress, and, in essence, have the power to "make" law. It was the US Supreme Court that over-turned a State law in the famous "Roe v Wade" decision that made abortion-on-demand a "human right", resulting in the deaths of tens of millions of innocent Americans over the last thirty-plus years. Earlier this year, Senator Barrack Obama said "If one of my daughters makes a mistake, I wouldn't want her to be punished with a child." That statement, along with his voting record as an Illinois State Senator, is a clear and undeniable statement on his position concerning the basic human right of "life". His election will result in the continued killing of untold millions of living, unborn people. There will be no chance of a turn-over of the Supreme Court decision that took away the rights of the States to allow their citizens and elected officials to have a voice regarding the practice of abortion. There is no debate on this fact. Senator John McCain, has a consistent pro-life voting record in both the US House and Senate. He opposes the procedure known as "partial-birth" abortion, while Senator Obama sees it as a "right" not to be infringed upon. If you do not understand this procedure and would like more information about it, click here. Be aware, it is disturbing.

Sadly, in the upcoming election, many Christians will cast their vote based purely on their long-standing politics. I personally know people who vote Republican because they've always voted Republican, while I know others who will vote Democrat because they've always voted Democrat. Could anything be more ignorant? I've actually heard people in churches say "my grandfather was a Democrat, my daddy was a Democrat, so of course, I'm a Democrat." I've also heard the very same argument from Republicans. To me, that statement makes as much sense as a murderer saying "my grandfather was a killer, my daddy was a killer, so of course, I'm a killer." I'm sure you don't believe that argument would stand up in a court of law as an acceptable excuse, and in the same matter, I don't think we can hide behind our political lineage to justify our voting record when we stand before the Great Judge.

The bottom line is... on November 4, VOTE for the candidates on the national and local level that best represent your values and convictions, first as a Christian, and secondly, as an American.

"If My people, which are called by My Name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, THEN, will I hear from Heaven and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land." (2 Chronicles 7:14)

Let's agree to pray for our nation during this critical time in our history, and pray that God would use us to spur a revival that will sweep the country. The root of all the problems we face is spiritual, not economic.

Blessings,

Gerald Wolfe

Greater Vision to be on Paul Heil's Gospel Greats Show this weekend!

From Paul Heil's website:

quote:

Our Featured Artists ....... Greater Vision, with songs from their brand new CD called "Not Alone." This is the first recording Greater Vision has done since changing tenors. Jacob Kitson fits right in, preserving the sound very much as it's been for years. The difference, of course, is where he's featured solo on a few songs. But the overall "feel" remains the same. This particular CD is strong lyrically, something for which Greater Vision has long been known. Their current radio hit, "I Want To Know That You Know," shares a concern that each of us should have for everyone we know, especially family members. I especially enjoyed the message of "You Were Faithful Yesterday," a song praising God's faithfulness — yesterday, today and forever. Rodney Griffin's story about why his song, "It Pays To Pray," became so special to him after he wrote it was a touching reminder of the value of persistence in prayer. What I like about Greater Vision, too, is that they've been blessed to take their music into many of the nation's largest churches, thereby exposing an ever-larger number of people to good Southern Gospel music.

Show times on XM/enlighten Radio (and DirecTV, channel 828):

Saturday, Oct. 11th, 6pm (ET)
Sunday, Oct. 12th, 9pm (ET)

Gerald Wolfe has started a BLOG!

If you'd like to read it (and/or subscribe to it), click here. His Blog is called "Just the Way It Is."

By the way, Gerald has warned that if you're "politically sensitive," his first blog may not be for you! However, it is my hope and prayer that anyone who is considering voting for Barack Obama, will read and give careful consideration to what he writes before voting.

According to Gerald, future blog topics may include his thoughts on music, life on the road, family life, and a variety of other subjects. I'm looking forward to what he has to write. I'm hoping that his marvelous sense of humor will come through on some of the Blogs!

PRAISEFEST 2008 .......

I just got back home from my very first "PraiseFest" with Greater Vision. For anyone who is not familiar with it, "PraiseFest" is a 3-day gathering of Greater Vision friends. It is an annual event featuring a lot of great Southern Gospel music, inspiring Christian speakers and lots of humor and fun times! I had asked God to give me something "special" every day and He did. I'll review my Journal and I'll post a little about the events and my thoughts in the next few days.

In the meantime, let me say that PraiseFest was WONDERFUL and I plan to go back next year, and the next, and the year after that and............. well, you get the idea!

Singing News, Southern Gospel's most popular magazine, has a "Fan Awards" program every year at the National Quartet Convention. Gerald Wolfe was the emcee this year. You can really get a good "look" at his sense of humor if you listen to the rebroadcast of the event. Here's information from their website:

PRESS RELEASE FROM THE GOSPEL MUSIC CHANNEL!!!

quote:

"Not Alone" named a "Top Ten" CD
Greater Vision's Latest CD among top recordings for 2008

Greater Vision's latest CD, "Not Alone" has been named one of Christian Music's Top Ten Recordings for 2008 by the Staff and Senior Music Editors of the Gospel Music Channel.
The writers and staff of the Gospel Music Channel described the recording by saying... "Great harmonies and poignant, powerful lyrics have always been the backbone of Greater Vision's music ministry and it's those qualities that make Not Alone one of the best discs of the year in any genre. Principal songwriter Rodney Griffin has a special gift and, once again, his lyrical genius makes this album a stand-out."

Of course, I am very proud of the gentlemen who make up "Greater Vision," and it always thrills me to see that their life's work gets this type of recognition. Although they are very humble men, they are not shy about using their talents to minister to people!

CONGRATULATIONS, GREATER VISION!
