In Matthew 7:7-8 it says- "Keep on asking and it will be given to you; keep on seeking and you

will find; keep on knocking and the door will be open to you. For everyone who keeps on asking

receives; and he who keeps seeking finds; and to him who keeps on knocking the door will be

opened." Okay, so I know and believe that God answers our prayers, I have had it done

before. But, when it comes to the major decisions in our life, is it okay to pray for a specific

thing as long as we know Gods will for our life, or should we just pray for his will to be done? If

I have something I want/need and I know that it fits into God's will for my life, is it okay to be

specific with God and pray that way? I would like comments and opinions on this thought!

I would pray like Jesus did in Gethsemane - from Mat. 26:39-42:

Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, "My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will."

Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. "Could you men not keep watch with me for one hour?" he asked Peter. "Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak."

He went away a second time and prayed, "My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done."

I think its OK to tell God what you would like, so long as you aren't (secretly) expecting him to do things your way. That leads to prayers that feel like they are bouncing off the sky IMO. We're expecting an answer that's what we want - not what God wants. Just ask him to reveal His will in the situation.

Good thought on this raivyne, I know that it is ultimatly God's will that I want anyway, but I want

to know for sure that it is really God speaking to my heart and not just my silly thoughts!

That's a tricky one I think I may have an inkling of your situation and I'm having a similar one right now... so I know exactly what you mean!

I will say that every negative (i.e. I think God isn't in this and I'm just hoping for/seeing what I want) thought I have is rooted in my own fear and self-perceived inadequacies and I know who it is in my ear that likes to bring me down...

Keep praying about it and one day your mind will be quiet and you'll feel the answer in your heart.

Do you believe you can truly know the answer in your heart? Because, when I was praying at

church last night, I think I did feel like I heard God whisper the answer to my heart, then I got

all scared and worried that maybe it was just me wanting that to be the answer and not really

God speaking to my heart at all. I feel a peace about what I heard and a worry deep down

because I don't know if I really did hear or not.

So when you thought back on what you felt in your heart you became worried again?

I can't tell you God's will in this situation. All I can do is tell you to enjoy the ride - God is my pilot, Jesus my navigator, the Spirit my steward – I’m just here for the ride!

Maybe you could talk to a church elder or your pastor. Maybe someone will end up prophesying over you...

/shrug keep praying for clarification.

Yeah, I guess when I picked it back up off the altar is when I became worried again, I guess I

let myself worry too much! I talked to my pastor about it and he said he would be praying for

me to have a clear head, open heart and descerning spirit to know God's will. Guess praying is

all I can do for now. As far as the prophesying over me, I had someone do that a little over a

week ago and she prophesied something that lines up with what I heard, so I guess I have to

just trust God and let him work it out!

There is a definition of "needs" as wants with varying degrees orf urgency. As the Scriptures say, we don't know how to pray as we aught and the Creator knows what we need before we ask. Therefore, it matters not whether we pray for a Rolls Royce or a Pinto. What matters is that we pray.

Now, if we let ourselves get frustratated because the Creator "doesn't answer", as the Messiah says, it is because we ask amiss. I don't think this means the wrong list, but the wrong motive. If a wife talks to here husband only about herself and the things she wants, and constantly complains about her belief that he never answers her, I can guarantee he will probably answer her even less. What is important is mutual understanding and not what we can recieve from the relationship.

I believe, this is how it is with the Creator. There is nothing wrong with letting Him know our problems, but a word to the wise is sufficient. If we focus on what He desires, then He will take care of our real needs at the right time, even if He doesn't give us what we think we need. If something continues to bother us, it is acceptable to "remind" Him of this. However, we need to be careful, because He might give us what we ask, so that we can see first hand why we should not have it.
