I have heard a lot of criticisms of Robertson's claims of divine justice for victims of natural disasters (for their sins) and other odd prophetic statements. Are these just anomolies or do they speak to something wrong with his Christian faith and chracter?

I've seen him show a lot of warmth and compassion on the 700Club show, but also heard of those controversial prophetic/judgmental type statements as well.

I would not call his salvation into question, but he has made some outrageous statements.

The problem (or one of the problems) of the neo prophetic types is there is no one to call them into account when they blow it like that. Robertson has a huge platform and following and as such is more influential (and IMO more responsible before God to get it right) than most. His mistakes stand out for all to see.

It is not for man to decide another man's heart. We are all imperfect children of God. People say things that don't ring true to my soul I turn off my ears. When people say things that ring true to my soul I nod in agreement.

The guy's certainly outrageous. Along with what you mention, the ones that stick in mind are his claims that God warned him of a terrorist attack on the US in 2007 (so either the guy's a fraud, or he's crazy, or God wasn't talking to him), and that he can leg-press extraordinary amounts of weight (a claim easily refutable by the most basic analysis). Also amused by how open he is about accumulating wealth (financial transactions are listed as his top hobby), when the camel-eye-needle verse is something he's perfectly familiar with.

The claim that natural disasters are divine retribution for some form of sin is very, very common, and alarming to say the least. If that's something wrong with him, then it's something wrong with a lot of Christians, and by extenstion - possibly - the Christian faith altogether. Though I'd probably prefer not to go that far.

Either way, for a lot of people (including Christians, from what I gather), he's a big PR problem for evangelical Christianity.

I agree with Dave too!

I wouldn't question his salvation either, but I think he's a loose cannon and needs to learn to keep his mouth shut!

No way...just because he makes those statements doens't mean all Christians are like that and Christianity itself is wrong. (That's like saying certain white people were part of the KKK and all whites are racist....not true obviously.)

It does upset me a great deal to hear Robertson make some of those "God is punishing you" remarks to victims of natural disasters, but I don't count him amongst people I seek for spiritual wisdom, truth, and leadership.... There are other pastors I much prefer, like Rick Warren, Billy Graham, Charles Stanley, and Irwin McManus (of Mosaic).

Let's not go too far like you said....just stick to Robertson.

As we say in Church I second that motion.

Really? ...I wonder the context though. I have heard assassination stuff I think of Saddam...which quite frankly I wouldn't mind at all. ...I wonder if he explained it....and gave explanations for the failure of his other prophetic predictions?

I percieve Robertson to be a fellow Christian, do not necessarily agree with all his points of view; but on things salvic, I do believe he has the right handle on things.

Thanks

Um, you can be pro-life (for innocent babies) and pro-death penalty. Just an FYI.. there is a grand difference.

Pat Robertson is a DOCUMENTED false prophet. So I guess the question is:

Can you be a false prophet and still be a Christian?

That absolutely is indeed the question we (Christians) have before us. Because as you correctly said, according to the Bible and to his own lips - he is a bonafide false prophet.

Did he claim to be a Prophet? I must have missed that.

Thanks

Making a statement such as "Thus saith the Lord, such and such will happen _________________on ___________" is akin to saying one is a Prophet.

The guy is a snake oil salesman. He used his ministries flying hospital to fly equipment to his diamond mines in Africa. He claims that his herbal medicines enable him to leg press a half-ton. His "word of knowledge" about a certain condition are on the same level as Miss June seeing Bobby on Romper Room. The question is if he is a Christian snake oil salesman. His continual statements such as "God told me that...." make me think not.

Matt 7:22 - 23 (ESV) 22On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ 23And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’

Woluld you think that if a person says that they believe God told them this or that; that they are claiming the office of Prophet.

If you do please explain.

I am not a prophet, but i have thought that God had spoke to me about things that did not happen; does that make my a false Prophet, or just on over zealous Believer.

I still have never heard Robertson claim the office of Prophet.

I will say that I find myself in a stramge position of seemingly defending someone of whom I am not especially fond of.

Thanks
RC
