I have been interested in chess to some degree for most of my life and wrote about it on my site. A page on that site produces various "flavors" of round robin schedules and has nearly 500 hits from all over the world.

It's about $100 a year, if I recall correctly.

Oh, you wanted a serious answer? Ok. I have one with Lunarpages for my PT information-systems work. It's only one page, and even that I brought down from freewebtemplates, and then edited the HTML to fit my needs better. The previous one I wrote from scratch, but it'd started looking rather 1990s, so I bit the bullet and replaced it with something whose hairline wasn't receding. I was too busy to write the foundation code myself, and besides, I don't write Web sites any more, so other people are better at it now than I am.

If you get a web site, make sure you pay the slight extra to have your domain registration made private. It cuts way down on spam to the email address you use to sign up for it, since that address is (otherwise) publicly viewable.

i had spare computer parts lying around, so i figured i would make my own webserver out of it. i built up a computer (only needed to buy video card, power supply and case), and installed linux on it with apache. after figuring that out, i had my own website and webserver!

my isp also gives us a static IP, so i could host my site at home without changing the IP all the time. i bought a domain name a while ago to go to my site.

basically, i use it as a file server to host images and such to show to friends, and to access some of my own files from anywhere. but i did make a basic webpage for my geology classes, with photos an videos. check it out:

I have a yahoo 360 page that links to my cafepress store, and my flickr page which includes an art portfolio. I also have a gallery on Imagekind that has an art portfolio of animal photograps and drawings.
The 360 page is basically a blog to keep my family informed about how things are going.
Facebook is my networking site.

I started my website to promote my Christian fiction book. But it soon grew to over 100 pages with pictures and now sound effects. (Check it out by clicking below).

I use a very old version of Frontpage and taught myself how to program. It's slow, but I get there in the end.

One tip: Always save your work. I learnt this the hard way after losing many pages and many long hours of work.

I run Informed Networker. For the last three years I was a network engineer and saw a need for a centralized source for IT news and articles - IN is it. :)

I run a couple of different websites.

SouthernGospelBlog.com: The one I put the most time into. I do daily posts with Southern Gospel news and commentary.

DanielMount.com: A mostly static website on my various writing and speaking projects

SGConcerts.com: A blog I own with ten other contributors writing concert reports on Southern Gospel concerts

SouthernGospelAlbums.com: A blog I own that has several other contributors; we work together to jointly review Southern Gospel albums

CathedralsTribute.org: A website on the history of the Cathedral Quartet

SGHistory.com: This is actually owned by David Bruce Murray (dbmurray here), but since I do the album art, I put enough time into it that I'll claim it, too, I think.

I own two web sites, and am in the process of building one for our church.
The one is information about Identity Theft
The other one, due to growing pains it owns me - It has to do with Collectibles If your starting to build your own site I'd make these recommendations.
1.) Start w/ a rough draft on paper. What is the main purpose of your site? What categories do you want? What do you want in each tab? The tabs should link to all the main areas of your web site. Are your tabs going to be across the top, side or bottom and top. Decide ahead of time what your main topic is. Are you selling anything? How is payment going to transfer? Ranting ? Giving information? What about pictures? It's OK to use several photo's on your home page, but sub pages should only have one or two. The more photos you have the longer it loads. If it takes forever to load with the click of a mouse your visitors are gone.
2.) Keep the entire site consistent with your main topic. Don't add affiliate links unless it is related to the topic on that page. Keep sub categories in their own section or page. Example: If you have a hobby site and your talking about airplanes and trains. Your main page may talk about HOBBY or HOBBIES, but from the home page there is just a link or tab to AIRPLANES, and another link to TRAINS. This will help in your relevancy with search engines.
3.) Be sure to test everything - test your links even when you believe them to be right. View your site in a couple of different browsers. Example Firefox, and Internet Explorer.
4.) Don't set up on a free web site with a goofy address from say the phone company. Get a good host, I recommend Web Hosting Pad, Buy your own private domain name, and get a secure site. Web hosting has a lot of bells and whistles and videos that show how to set up most features.
If you spend a lot of time pre-planing, you'll spend less time later re-fixing.
Best of luck.
