First you need to admit that you have a flaw, pick one that you actually have. My main flaw that I confess is tardiness. I generally admit that I run late, but then I also talk about how I am attempting to overcome that flaw. If you say - I don't have any flaws, it can tell the interviewer that either your totally clueless to your own short comings, or that whatever your flaw is - could be a major issue later. Most people I have asked that question, that tell me they have no flaws don't get a 2nd interview.

That's a tough question that I hate. It's such a personal question. If I were to give my greatest flaw, which is pride, I'd probably never get a job in life.! Pride is the absolute worst sin in Bible (Satan's original sin...he didn't punch anyone or lust or lie, etc.....he was proud in his heart and thought himself better than everyone, which then led to all the other sins). But how does one explain pride or bring it up? That made me wonder if the question could be interpreted as what is your greatest common work related flaw. ...not a character flaw. .... In that sense, I could easily say either tardiness or quickness to finish and gloss over things (lack of attention to detail).

Just to follow up, many times what the person is looking for is honesty. When someone says "I really don't have any flaws" that is being dishonest, so it could mean that they are hiding something in their work history. So having something that you say there, is very inportant, but what you admit can also be inportant. It is the same with "Where do you see yourself in 5-10 years." It is a qualifier question, open ended to see what the person has to say. Answer it well and you can get to the next level, poorly and you can basically eliminate that employer from your list.

I would say I'm not good at interviews, don't like bragging about myself.

Pick something that you have, and how you have overcome it.

I've talked about this with friends for years. I have never interviewed for a job, but it seems to me like this is an inherently dishonest questions, and most of the people I know agree. I have a funny story about a buddy's response to this question but I don't think this is the best place to post it.

I was asked this question when I interviewed for my current job. I don't remember my answer, but it must not have been too bad. I was also asked what kinds of people I find difficult to work with.

I agree with those that have said the question is looking for honest self-evaluation. So to answer it, all one has to do is look at themselves and ask, "what is the biggest reason why am I not running this company\department?" It could something as basic as, though you have some experience, you don't have enough. Or it could be your lack of leadership skills. Play it smart. Pick something that you can obtain if you get the job, but doesn't prevent you from doing the job. Or if it's something that you don't like anyway, admitting it may work out for you were you're not asked to do it (i.e. I've been constantly told that I'm an excellent "teacher", from people that have worked for me or with me. Many have told me I was there favorite boss, because of my ability and willness to help them learn. Ironically, it's something that, for some reason, I don't like doing, regardless of how well I do it. When I do it, I'm never impatient with the people, but I often "feel" impatient. So, I've mentioned that before in a job interview for a position where training others was more voluntary, than mantatory. Obviously, if it was key to the postion, I wouldn't have said it). One thing you don't want to do is try reverse psychology, by picking something that you hope they will see as a positive. Interviewers aren't fooled by that, they simply see it as a lack of personal insight. Saying, "my biggest flaw is that I'm a workaholic" isn't going to fool them.
