I have heard several different answers on this....I need to hear more. My late husband was killed in Vietnam. He was rescuing a wounded soldier from the field at the time, so is considered a hero on our Earth, recieved the Purple Heart, the Silver Star, etc. I know one of the commandments is "Thou shalt not kill" and I have to assume that having been in the war zone for 8 months before his death, he must've killed at least one, maybe more? Does this mean he will not go to Heaven? Does saving a life cancel out the others? I'm not really knowledgeable on the Bible and this has been eating at me for almost 40 years. Your opinions, please? Can he be a hero on Earth, yet a sinner? (He was drafted, if that changes anything)

A common misunderstanding of the commandment is that it reads "Thou shalt not kill." And some versions of the Bible have it translated that way. However, looking at the original Hebrew, a better understanding would be, "Thou shalt not murder." The difference is, if you kill someone defending someone else, which would include defending your country in a war, then it's not a sin. Another thing to think about - God commanded Joshua to go to war, which involved killing people. Would He have commanded that if it had been sinful? I wouldn't worry about it. In my opinion, killing in wartime is not murder.

I'd agree with MrFribbles on this one. I've always understood "thou shalt not kill" as "Thou shalt not commit murder". There's a subtle difference in definition of those two words. To kill is to deprive of life. To murder is to kill with malice aforethought. just my $.02

THe correct interpretation is Thou Shall not Commit Murder. Although it is possible to be in a war situation and still commmit murder the vast majority of the killings are in defense and not murder. If your husband was a Christian look for him when you get to heaven. From one Vietnam Vet to a Widow of a Vietnam Vet may I say God Bless you and give you peace.

I agree with Mr. Fribbles, Raivyne, and Qtman. I think the literal translation (word for word) from the original Hebrew language was thou shall not murder. "You shall not murder." (Exodus 20:13) NASB "You shall not murder." (Deuteronomy 5:17) NASB. "YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, YOU SHALL NOT MURDER, YOU SHALL NOT STEAL, YOU SHALL NOT COVET" (Romans 13:9) NASB

John 15:13 I believe that means your husband is a hero in the eyes of God also. And I agree with the others that the commandment is speaking of murder. Bless you. Peace

The only sin that will send a person to Hell is the sin of unbelief in Jesus Christ as an individuals Lord and Savior. Your husband is a hero. If he died in Christ he is safe in the arms of the Lord. Do not let your heart be troubled by what may have happened in the midst of a war. Our sins do not separate us from God because of the finished work of Christ on the Cross. I hope this comforts you. Grace and Peace
