Aww......Happy Birthday Jack!!!!! (My Jack is about to be 2yo at the end of this month...and our oldest, Jake, is going to be 8yo at the end of next month...so I understand the whole "where has the time gone" mental stuff....it really does past way too quickly!!!!)

I hate this aspect of American culture! Why do we let our kids grow up so fast???? Here in Mexico, the kids aren't even thinking about moving out. It just wouldn't be economical. Many of our friends are 23-25+, single and living happily at home with their families. They also work and help with the finances. Since my kids have had their teen years here, 4+ years, I encourage them to be Latin, but I'm not sure it's working. My oldest is now in YWAM and says that he's feeling really independent and loves it there. He says that he's feeling closer to God than ever in his life. He also informed us that he's probably going to go to a YWAM based program after dts, that will be based in the US. Who knows! I'm just happy he's happy. I'm not really sure what my youngest wants to do but he's been helping me with the baby. I let him drive my car alone today for the first time. He's 17 and only has a drivers permit from the states but he only went a block and half away. He didn't want it to rain on him walking.
Happy 16th birthday mom! Hope you enjoy him!

I understand about time going so quickly!! My youngest is 15 and a half.
It seems like just yesterday the dr. was putting my almost 23 year old son in my arms for the first time.

He was suppose to take his driving test on Wednesday but he has made some very irresponsible decisions lately that have us wondering if he really understands the importance of driving safely. I let him drive when there were some of his friends were in the car too. He was so caught up in showing off that he drove right over the curb. He made several other silly mistakes that he never makes. He was just to caught up in showing off. So what is he going to do if he is driving all by himself and he comes across a group of his friends. I can see him hurting someone or worse just so he can show off. Now his dad is making him prove he is responsible enough to drive well even when his peers see him before he can get his licence. So far it is not promising, leaving the house without telling anyone is not the way to do it.

I know what you mean, and the insurance companies do also. Unfortunately at that age many young ppl don't know really know the meaning of danger. In some countries the minimum age for driving is 17 and in others 18; I guess there is some sense to that.
On the other hand there is also the "oh, my friends are also learning to drive" thing.
So what you're experiencing isn't unusual. The main thing is the prayer and Bible reading habit thing, and the developing the respect for others thing, including on the road.
Hope his test on Wed. goes okay, anyway.
Some of the stuff that teens like to do, hair color, jewelry, whatever, is not much of a big deal, I guess. It's the big things that really count, right?

Just to encourage you...you're doing the right thing by making him wait until he has proven responsible. We have had lots and lots of teens in this area die while driving with their friends in the car. You will not regret making him wait, but I bet those parents regret letting them go ahead, KWIM?
We'll have some very strict rules when our kids start driving, and 16 is not the magic get your license age in this house. It's too huge of a responsibility to give it to a kid who isn't ready for it.

My wife was driving at 16; she has always been a sensible sort of person.
I read in a National Geographic Magazine of about 40 years ago that in the US a 14 year old could legally drive from one coast of to the other, and ppl wanted to stop it. That's far too young.

Here, when a kid gets their permit at 16, they are only allowed to drive if they have a licensed driver (someone who has had their license for 4 years) with them. When I was 16, I thought it was the dumbest rule. Now that I'm a parent, I am so thankful for it (even though we're 14 years away from this issue!)
While I think a kid can learn to drive at 16, not all are responsible enough to be on their own doing so.

I talk to my wife about the 'bucking bronco' drivers on our highway.
A bit of maturity should do a lot to tame them...

There's a difference between doing your laundry at your mom's house and having your mom do your laundry.  And if she folded it...it was because she wanted to, not because you expected her to.

I don't look forward to it either.
I would be happy to let my child do their laundry at our house, and to eat at our dinner table every night (they would have chip in though). I like the Mexican thing though about having them live with your until they are really ready to fly the coup.

No I wont do his laundry, it is just a little joke we pass around since he saw that on the Cosby Show. The kids came home with dirty laundry hoping mom will wash it. I do not wash his clothes now unless he is sick and running out of clean clothes.

I am now a mom of a 16 year old - 
He will put that super cute please mommy look on his face and I will tell him to leave his laundry by the washer and I had better get a nice hug. I know for sure about the food but the laundry well he washes his own unless he is super busy then he asks me to do it. So he may not bring dirty laundry but I know he will bring a hungry stomach!
