Hello ladies,

Just curious how much you spent/plan to spend on your wedding? Can't seem to find any cheap place in the NJ. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

We were married in Georgia. Our wedding, reception AND honeymoon totaled around 7K. We paid for it ourselves, but we did receive some nice cash gifts that we applied towards the wedding.

hi......we married ten years ago in tx....spent $3,000 because my parents called in a lot of "you owe me" type things...so most of the stuff was done by friends not "professionals". We weren't married in a typical wedding place (it was a tv studio) and we didn't really have a reception (just cake and mints). Those are two ways we cut costs. Plus my dad took pics (he does pics for weddings, has for years), my dad married us (he's a preacher), and the guys side all wore their uniforms (Army guys)

We married 25 years ago and our wedding cost us about £150 ($300). We hired my dress and the two bridesmaids' dresses, the church married us for free, we rented a church hall for the reception, bought the food wholesale and friends from church served it to us. The biggest cost was the live band for the barn dance.

We spent about 100 bucks on our wedding...
30 for the licence, 30 for the Justice of the Peace, and then we went out to brunch. We got married at 11am on a Friday and I went to work at 4 the same day! No honeymoon, no guests. It'll be 10 years in October.

but we were broke...

We had 150 guests.

Oh and no alcohol. We served sparkling grape juice and iced water.

Anyone who wanted alcohol went up the road to the pub, lol.

We were going to go dry (no alcohol), but my MIL and FIL were horrified, so they offered to buy the beer and wine for the reception. We have no problems with moderate drinking, so it was fine by us. We had an early wedding, so nobody had more then a glass or two of alcohol.

Like I said, my budget included the honeymoon, so I'm sure what the wedding alone cost. But we were married and had the reception at the same place, which saves time at least.

Where our reception was, everyone would have had to have driven there. We didn't want to provide the wherewithal for anyone at our wedding to drink and drive. We weren't bothered about what anyone else thought as it was our wedding, not theirs!

We spent less than $4000 on our wedding. I bought my dress on ebay (with shipping it was only $150, made to my measurements, and was beautiful!), we found a nice small church in town with a reasonable rental fee, we rented the auditorium of a community center for our reception, and we bought the food at Sam's Club. We also hired a violinist and cellist from Craigslist to play background music at the reception, paid $100 for a clown to entertain the kids at the reception, and the dad of a friend (he is a gourmet chef) made our wedding cake for $150. We made our own invitations as well.

I purchased the dresses for the 2 bridesmaids on ebay for $50 total, the 2 flowergirl dresses for $30 and the 2 ring bearers wore black pants with white dress shirts, and I bought black suspenders and bowties for them for less than $20.

We found our photographer and videographer on Craigslist. That didn't go quite as well as we'd hoped, the photographer wasn't have his best day, and the videographer had major computer problems, so we didn't get the finished video but we did get all the raw footage, which I actually like better in some ways. The videographer did our wedding for free as she was starting up a wedding videography business, so we didn't lose money on that.

I bought many of my wedding decorations from Oriental Trading Company and http://www.save-on-crafts.com/ I also haunted thrift stores and dollar stores for some of the decorations as well as Party City.

I was also blessed with a friend who is a wedding coordinator, so she helped with the decorating at the church and reception and did all the wedding coordinator stuff the day of the wedding as a gift.

Another friend did my hair and makeup as a gift.

We also didn't have alcohol. Too expensive, and I didn't want to deal with any drunk/excessively 'happy' people at the reception.

The wedding and reception were beautiful, and today I still get compliments about how beautiful everything was.

Weddings and receptions can be done very inexpensively, it just takes work and not caving in to the pressure to have an extravagant event, especially if you can't afford an extravagant event.

My husband and I paid for everything except the food. His parents paid for that (and for the rehearsal dinner).

Like I said, we have no issue with social drinking, we were just cheap. We've never had any problem putting our foot down with parents, and nobody abused the alcohol that was served.

Our budget was 10K with rings, honeymoon, etc.

We were at about 12k by the end. As we did not remember small things we had to pay for like rehersal dinner, tux for my nephew etc.

We paid cash, so that is all that mattered to us.

When all is said and done, including EVERYTHING including travel, gifts, ceremony and items for it, reception, flowers, invitations and save the dates, dress, honeymoon.....we were probably also around $12K. But, we got a lot for that money. Our reception was at a hall, with DJ, open bar and buffet dinner. And we had a week long honeymoon and a lot of travel since we were planning the wedding long distance.

My mom paid $6K, my husband and I paid for everything else. No debt for this wedding either! I just wish it had not gone by so fast.... I can't wait to see the pictures!

We saved our money for the honeymoon. I think our wedding cost about $300 or so. We held the ceremony in our backyard, had chicken and picnic food for our guests since the ceremony ended about lunch time and some folks had a bit of a drive to get home. I used my own photo for invites online. My sis and mom took the rest of the photos. I bought a pretty dress from the thrift store and my daughter was my bridesmaid and had a similar dress. We had sparkling grape juice and wine for a toast. Our wedding cake was Humming bird cake, single layer and delicious.

ON the other hand, my friends threw a wedding for their daughter and it cost a bundle. A good time was had by all.Another friend and myself took the photos so they did try to cut costs where they could so that they could spend money on other things, like an antique car with a rumble seat to take the couple to the reception.

I would say no more than $5000.

We went to Cuba so we just had to pay for the trip, the wedding was free with our stay. The only thing we had to do was get our passports, and dress and suit. They did everything else for us.

When we came back we had a bbq reception, and that was probably about $500 to book the park and hire the caterer.

I think we budgeted a few thousand (up to $3000). We probably ended up paying a bit over $1000 because my grandmother wanted us to have a meal so she gave us the money for that (which was @$1000 catered by my SILs friend and her 2 daughters...they did a fabulous job and we gave them a few hundred extra as a thank you.)

up to $100 in dress materials (my mom made the dress), slippers, veil
$30 in flowers and supplies for the guest flowers
$30 for the fresh flowers (ours didn't come in so we went around and bought pots of daffodils and tulips)
$30 for bubbles, ribbons, candles and other decoration for the church
church hall was free
minister married us for free (dh's home church) but we gave him a gift
my uncle took the photos
$300 for the cakes (my mom's friend and the best I've ever eaten)
$200-300 in tuxedos and bridesmaid dresses (we paid for both the fathers and 1 bridesmaid)
$40 for my hair
$50 for the piano player
up to $100 in gifts for groomsmen and bridesmaids

I think that's about it. Everybody pitched in. We got many comments about what a happy wedding it was, really laid-back and homey.

I am definitely looking to save, save, save. We both have family members that can help out in different ways. There are many talents in our families! We can get married in my friends fathers church since he owns it and Im sure it will be free. I am definitely looking for other ways to save.

When we first got engaged, my dad said he would pitch in $500.00 and a ladder! He's always the jokester!

After all was said and done, we (well, my parents) spent about $4,000.00 total including having the reception at a nice reception hall with lunch included. We had no alcohol, only sparkling cider for the toast. Iced tea and coffee were included with the lunch package (we also saved boatloads of money by having our reception at lunch, instead of dinner).

Ours was $2000 (15 years ago). That did not include a honeymoon - we were took broke to go on one. My parents paid for the wedding... Dad said he'd give us $2000 and we could have a wedding or take the cash & elope. Sometimes I wish we would have gone with the latter choice, or at least done a much more simple wedding & then gone away.

We set the date in April, and got married in June - we put our budget at $2,000. After everything was said and done, including the honeymoon, we were just slightly over. Not too bad at all, I'd say!

We used his parent's church, which was free for us to use, and the reception hall was owned by a sister church, and it was only $250 to use all day. We had a dessert reception only, and had guests bring in their favorites, so we only had to buy the wedding cheesecake (kroger). We also had many wonderful, talented friends and family help out with the decorations (hand-crafted), scheduling arrangements, piano music (cousin-gift), photography (bridesmaid's husband-gift), videography (groomsman-gift), flowers (bridesmaid's gift, hobby lobby), and invitations (friend's good penmanship, card&party). So, we saved a lot there!! We bought very simple, inexpensive wedding rings with the intention of replacing them with nicer ones for an anniversary when we have more money. And for our honeymoon we stayed three nights at a wonderful bed and breakfast on Lake Michigan. We spent the rest of it at home packing, haha. It was a bit pricey, but well worth it!

Wow...thanks for all of you who shared! I think it's very sweet and warm to have a wedding at home, or the way you girls described (with friends and family helping out in various ways). but for us, it's not likely to happen....

We'll likely get married in our church. it's almost a tradition in our church that friends will all help out with the decoration and we usually use fake flowers instead of fresh flowers for decor. I'm gonna ask if we can re-use some of the decoration materials from my friends so we can save some money (and energy on coming up with decor ideas).

Great to know all the money-saving tips from you girls (ebay to get dresses, etc). but banquet is expensive in NJ if we want a decent place and meal. We are both the oldest child in the family, both the first grandchild to get married, so you can imagine the excitement and anticipation from our families..... i estimate that we'll have about 200 guests, and it seems like $100/person is a reasonable guess here in NJ. we'll be broke!

I got married in NJ 14 years ago. Our wedding was about $1000

My dress and all that went with it was about $250

We got married at my church so all it cost was a small gift to the minister: about $100

A friend of my mom's does photography so she took the pictures and gave the film to my mom who developedd them at Kmart: maybe $150

I was planning on a simple cake and finger food reception done by the DD of a friend of my mom. However, a friend of ours owned a meat distributer company and he bought my cake, donated the food, and got a 4 star chef to cook as his gift to us. We had lasagna, prime rib, some kind of chicken, baby red taters, a veggie. We did have to rent dishes though and that was about $250 which is what we had planned to spend on the simpler reception. No alcohol

$100 on flowers for wedding party and our parents. Our boquets were used to decorate the head table at the reception. We did pick up some inexpensive carnations to decorate the wedding cake.

We let the men just wear a suit they had. We bought matching ties for all: maybe $40 in all

The girls had their dresses made. For one it was about $50 because a family did it. For the one who had to pay a seamtress it came to about $100. However, they paid for those.

$30 or so for the license.

Our wedding was $15,000. We paid for everything, in cash. (325 guests.)
