I was in the car shop the other day, waiting for my car to be fixed (just an oil change actually), when a clip came on tv--that classic Honeymooners show. As I watched the show, I noticed something missing--cursing and sexual overtones. I also noticed that..it was funny! Then I considered today's "comedy" shows on tv. How low we have come! Sexual innuendo, or blatant sexual jokes abound. The Honeymooners, Dick Van Dyke Show, Andy Griffith Show..etc., all were good w/o having to have bad words or themes. Today? TV is drivel, a waste land, a tank of sewage. TV reflects are far we have sunk into a tank of sin. Yes, there is good stuff on tv--History Channel, Discovery, etc., but, for broadcast, it is a wasteland. I mean, think about those crime shows that show corpses. What does it say about a society that considers corpses and violence to be entertaining? What a mess... C

I mean, think about those crime shows that show corpses. I'm with you as far as gratuitous violence and sex goes but murders have corpses. People want to tell and hear real stories based in reality. Therefore if the story is about a violent crime then it needs to show a violent crime, not a not so violent sanitized version of a crime. What does concern me that is related to this is that family TV is becoming too sexualized and violentized (I'm sorry but I wanted a rhyme). Kids don't need to see such things. There should be a time (before 8 PM) and a place (certain cable networks that say they cater to kids) for kids to watch "safe TV" with their parents. I'm not sure how to do that since I'm not a big fan of government regulation (I'm not opposed to it here but I don't want to overdo it) and apparently the market is saying that people want more adult content (not "adult" as in dirty but "adult" as in not innocent) even in kids programming. The best I can come up with is that if you see a show that you feel is good for your kids watch it, encourage other families to watch it and email the show's sponsors and the network it airs on and tell them how much you enjoy it. BTW: we already have a similar thread on comedy shows but if we focus on other types like drama then another thread is not redundant as they are different genres with different "rules" and expectations.

I think TV is more segmented regarding target audiences these days. I can think of four shows that I enjoy that are fairly clean: Chuck, Pushing Daisies, Middleman, and Doctor Who. OTOH, I don't understand why Showtime and HBO think shows have to push past an R rating in order to run on their networks. I am still hoping that an edited version of The Tudors will turn up on PBS.

I would suggest buying DVDs of the shows you like and watching those. Excellent idea. Not only does it allow you to watch an "acceptable" show (however one defines that) but it sends a powerful message to the networks, writers and producers about what shows you want to watch.

I think you have a good point, Concerto. I watch a lot of old movies, as well as reruns of old shows. I like them much better than shows on today, with a couple of exceptions. Mostly I just read books.

SO TRUE, but the word says "that in the last days evil will abound, but Grace will much more abound. Also 'greater is he that is within us than he that is in the world,we have to stay away from such as this, turn the channel, or turn it off.
