I exercise very hard, my hip (outer) the joint that connects with my hip, pops and snaps and cause pain. The pain is not overbearing, but hurts enough in my upper hip joint that it hurts to run the tred-mill, and even mop the floor it pops and snaps. I can kick my leg sideways and feel the jont pop. Anyone had this, before. What causes it? How did you heal it? I do not want to go to the doctor for this problem. I will if I have too, but, I just do not have time lately and though I have insurance I do not want the expense. My mom has RA, my great grandfather, and grandmother, and two aunts have died of RA. I guess maybe it all boils down to simple fear of having RA. I do not want to qiut the work-out either for my health sake. I know this advice is not from a physician, and I do not take it as such, but, maybe it is something simple. I am sure it is, and any advice is appreciated. Thanks

If it hurts to do the treadmill, don't do it. If you want to keep working out, focus on exercises that don't stress your hip joint. Upper body work outs are good, for example. If you keep doing things that hurt you, you could damage yourself permanently.

I'd stop running on the treadmill for at least a week (I am somewhat of a runner so I am not telling you to stop running completely) Also are your shoes worn out? Running with worn out shoes causes all kinds of problems. Certain treadmills are very hard to run on, especially the inexpensive ones because they don't have the cushioning the more expensive ones do. Your form ends up different on a treadmill than outside too because the belt is helping to move your legs along. You lose a lot of flexibility running too so you need to make sure you are stretching or add in yoga to your exercise routine.

I echo what the others have said. If running on the treadmill is causing you pain, quit running on the treadmill! Pain is your body's way of telling you that you are injured. If you are scared of having RA then maybes it'd be worth going to the doctors to get it checked out ~ if the doctor rules it out you may find that you feel better physically. And if it is RA then your doctor may be able to give you advice on what you can do to in terms of diet and exercise so you don't make matters worse.

Deffinately stop what you're doing if it is causing you pain and discomfort. Don't go to the doctor unless you need pain pills. But do go to a good Chryrpractor and get your spine and back and hips checked out. It is every obvious that something is out of alignment that is causing your discomfort. It could be a disk in the lower back that goes out just a little bit when you exercise. A good chyropractor can tell you for sure what is going on in your back, with an exam, exrays, and MRI if necessary. I have had back problems for years and have never needed surgery, although this time I was pretty close. I have a very good Chyropractor and always puts my back back in place. Spiritchsr1

Yes, exercise is good for your health. But if you're having that much pain and trouble from your hips, you've also got to consider your joint health. As others have mentioned, just because you have a family history of RA doesn't mean you have RA - though with these symptoms it might be worth getting your hip examined to know for sure what its problem is, even if it's just to rule out RA. There are new treatments available and a lot of the success in treatment depends on catching it early. That said, as the others mentioned, it would also be a good idea to check things like your shoes. Leg mechanics all the way down to how your feet move (even due to bad shoes) can impact your hips. There can be a lot of things that play into why hips develop problems.

Light, It sounds more like Bursitis than the actual hip joint. I have had it and yep it hurts pretty bad.

I know the pain you speak of. I've had hip problems my whole life--in fact, my doctor once thought I had rheumatic fever because my hips hurt so bad and they put me on crutches for two whole months! (That was in third grade and luckily I wasn't ill. There's just something wrong with how my hips formed.) To make a long story short, what I have done to remedy hip pain over the years is to stretch. There are a number of yoga poses that are especially for hips and those are the best. For me, it doesn't totally get rid of ALL the popping, catching, etc. but it does make those incidents fewer and far between.

When was the last time you were tested for Rheumatoid Factor? It sounds like you could possibly have Palindromic Rheumatism which affects mostly the large joints (i.e., hips) and is often a precursor to full blown Rheumatoid Arthritis although the Rheumatoid factor is not always present in this condition. Have you also periodically had trouble with other joints as PR often moves from joint to joint during flares? With your family history, I strongly suggest you see a Rheumatologist right away.
